I literally said that he probably had a busy schedule for early 2022 and couldn't make it work. You quoted me saying that.

Good point. It's fun seeing some "deep cuts" skits instead of a Greatest Hits Collection, like say, Schwetty Balls again.

But I assume Rudd has a busy schedule for early 2022 and couldn't make it work. But given a choice between what we got and that? I would chose that.
The problem was that Rudd had scheduled his entire week for THIS week. The show wasn’t pared down until the last minute. Rudd spent the entire week preparing for it. It’s not like they could have just thrown on a “Christmas Special” past skits episode and it would have given Rudd his week back.

Oh I know. I used the words "selfishly preferred" for a reason.

Ok. I just wanted to clarify to all the “why didn’t they just put on a rerun and have Rudd return later” people that Rudd put in 85% of his commitment for this episode.

I actually kind of liked this episode, all things considered. It allowed the crew to show some new stuff and some old stuff that hasn’t been shown in decades. And it was certainly memorable. Much better than the typical “Best of SNL Christmas” that we typically get this time of year anyway.

If they don't bring back Paul Rudd and Charli XCX in early 2022 and write up at least one multiverse / timeline / variant sketch, it will be a huge missed opportunity.

I think it would have been funny to just postpone the Christmas episode, then do it in February, March, or April with all of the skits they planned, and even the Weekend Update jokes. Complete with the awkward, racist stuff that Che and Jost write for each other. Just film it like a regular episode, and it would be like watching a rerun.

They should have had Hanks present a kind of deep cuts Christmas episode, showing some old Christmas skits that haven't been seen in a long time, like the Carvel Cakes one, and "At Home with the Psychos."

I really got a kick out of the Globing Warming Christmas Special with all of the weird random stuff like Isaac Asimov singing with Crystal Gayle, Tom Hanks playing a shitfaced Dean Martin, Chris Farley leaping around as Dom DeLuise, and Carl Sagan throwing red paint on Crystal Gayle's fur coat. Just completely surreal and anarchic. (Which is how I remember the early 1980s episodes with Eddie Murphy, Joe Piscopoe, and Tim Kazurinsky.)

Obviously, they could just go see the movie again when the theater would, presumably, not be full of noisy kids, so, the only reason to present those two ideas together like that means that the person is saying their chance to enjoy the movie is gone.

You shouldn't have stuck the "much rather" in there.
You must be a lot of fun at parties.

I guess I didn't understand why you would be posting what you would like to have happen in a fantasy reality and not the one we live in.

If that's what were doing, I don't know why they did this stupid clip show when they could have gotten John Belushi, Chris Farley, Gilda Radner, and Phil Hartman to headline a live show of all improvised sketches.

I love this song/skit. (I wish Horatio Sanz would do a Life Day version dressed as Mythrol.)

Just thought I'd share some holiday spirit.

^ Yeah, caught bits and pieces of the holiday special last night and saw that, they're definitely doing everything they can not to bust up laughing. The skit with Kate McKinnon and the Santa abduction was a good one that I've never seen before.

That said, I'm a sucker for the classics, and Dan Ackroyd as Irving Mainway never fails to make me laugh hysterically.

I think there have been about a half dozen of them. They're up on youtube under "close encounter." The first one was about an alien abduction, and the others are centered around other paranormal experiences involving McKinnon's Colleen Rafferty. It's one of my favorite recurring sketches.

I somehow missed that Carl Sagan sketch back in the day, it was so bizarre and great to see such an obscure bit. Fuck I miss Phil Hartman.

Some other old SNL X-mas bits from the past I like are the Gumby Christmas Special ("It's Christmas, Dammit!"), and that seemingly ad-libbed one with Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo as the old-timers in the dive bar (Piscopo is the pianist). And one they only showed part of last night was Dysfunctional Family Christmas:

Daddy's nose is red and runny
Daddy's voice is gruff and funny
And the only words I can understand are "god" and "damn" and "Christmas"

That Global Warming sketch was kind of mediocre and really long and maybe not everything with that great cast from 1991 worked. It should have been LOL funny with all the talented people involved.

I forgot about the naughty elves with Bayer and Gosling

Overall it was a bumer with no proper live show with the last episode of 2021 but still they found the time to double the amount of commercials compared to a regular live show

If it was in Oct or Nov it would be easier to digest but not the finale of the year with the long Holiday break coming.

Thanks, I'll have to look those up. I was only an occasional viewer of SNL until Covid hit, then I was home EVERY damn Saturday night.

Lorne Michaels got a Kennedy Center Honor and 3 Weekend Updates with Kevin Nealon, Seth and Amy, and Jost and Che to roast him.

Directv guide says there will be a new episode on Jan 15, 2022 but no cast or musicial guest info unless they are wrong and it is Jan 22 or 29.

Things will show up as "new" in the DirecTV guide if they don't have any information.

SNL does this quite a bit; episodes will show up on my "to do" list and then drop off when the info is updated and the DVR discovers that they're re-runs. South Park does the same thing. I'll have random, untitled episodes at odd hours show up in my upcoming recordings that disappear a few days later.

Next show is on Jan. 15th. Host is Ariana Debose. MG is Roddy Ricch
I guess they've run out of famous people to have on the show.

She was really good as Anita in West Side Story... but yeah, C-list at best.
I have no idea who Roddy Ricch is.
