Yeah, I think back to the South Park episode where they could say "shit", as long as it wasn't referring to feces or defecation. As they explained, you could say "Ah shit, I gotta poop and shit", but you can't say "I gotta take a shit".

Well, at least Pete Davidson got to go see the new Spider-man movie with Kim Kardashian instead of having to work tonight.

I guess SNL didn’t want to not have a show. The advertisers should get their money back.

When I found out limited cast I thought the ones who got Covid were sent home and everyone else was tested and they could still have a decent show.

But after 4 got it and 3 others said they wouldn’t show up, I guess Lorne sent everyone home.

But then why have Che and Kenan stay? And why bring Hanks and Fey in?

That’s kind of fucked up and doesn’t make a bit of sense.

"Apocalyptic telethon." Pretty spot-on.

That was just fucking bizarre. They should have just canceled tonight's show, slapped together a "best of" of some kind, and then done the "Christmas" episode with Rudd
sometime in the spring.

And, goddamn, that Christmas special skit with Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov was fucking weird. It would have weird even back in 1990 or whenever it was on.

And I think that over 50% of the air time was commercials...

Has Dick in a Box always been bleeped on the show?

The run time for the episode on Hulu is 1:07. The time for last week's was 1:09. So not a significant difference in the amount of commercial time.

Yeah, I always remember it being bleeped out when aired. There may be an uncensored version on youtube or somewhere though.

That’s correct, bleeped on TV, unedited on YouTube.

The guy who last week claimed that the Billie Eilish episode of SNL was the worst in the show’s history: That title didn’t last too long, did it?

I disagree. They air an SNL Xmas special of clips every year in primetime, and old full episodes are available to watch on streaming. I liked the idea of the stars introducing a personal selection of something they liked. They had Rudd and Hanks on hand, and some prerecords, so they did their best to throw something new together to do live. I appreciate that they made an effort in weird circumstances.

When it first started I thought it was going to be hilarious by making fun of “The Christmas Shoes”. The bit started out pitch perfect but when I veered onto being about the bird it crashed hard. It should have been so much better.

And I know it’s 35 years old but Steve Martin’s Christmas Wish is one of the most brilliantly written and executed bits in the history of comedy!

Yes, really odd. I'd much rather have a proper episode with Rudd another time.

The premise of your comment is that because this episode exists, they won't have Paul Rudd on again to host any time soon?

I am 100% confident that they would have Rudd back for his sixth hosting gig as soon as he is willing to devote a week of his busy life to being in NYC to do it. Ant-Man 3 doesn't come out until summer 2023, so maybe he won't want to do the show until spring of 2023 when he is on the hook for promoting it.

The point is this episode isn't denying you anything you wouldn't have gotten anyways.

It was definitely a weird episode but I'm glad they did it. It's unique and memorable (memorably bizarre) even though it the skits were mostly forgettable.

The East and West Coast broadcasts are the full episodes obviously with commercials.

For next day streaming through Hulu & Peacock and on demand through cable/ipTV & Satellite, the episodes are edited to just under an hour and fifteen minutes. Musical performances and/or skits will be removed for these.

No idea what you are talking about. The episodes on Hulu are the entire episodes with the commercials removed. They all run essentially the same amount of time, meaning that the ad time for each show is the same, give or take a couple minutes.

I guess it may not have been clear that my post was in response to those claiming that last nights had way more commercials than normal.

So did they make that Pete Davidson short so they have something to show in case he turns up dead in 5 years?

I know I saw it at the time but I completely blanked on that Carl Sagan skit but Kevin Nealon's "Does my tan frighten you?" weirdly rang a bell. Was pretty great seeing Jan and Phil again.

Death by slammin' hot tail?

The Carl Sagan thing was something that was never gonna end up on a Xmas clip show, but Hanks liked it because he had fun impersonating Dean Martin, so that made it a little fun to see what the stars wanted to pick.

What a bizarre and condescending response. That's not what I meant at all. And I have no idea how you deduced that. I merely said I'd rather have Rudd do a regular episode another time. Not one where he mostly introduces clips from past shows.

Good one. I've said this before many times, but Hartman is probably my all-time favorite "SNL" cast member. And the seasons he appeared on were among the best (S12-19)

I deduced that by reading your posts: They shouldn't have done this one; I'd much rather see Rudd host another time.

For example: I went to see Spider-Man at a Saturday matinee and I didn't enjoy it because the theater was full of noisy kids; I'd much rather have seen it in a quiet theater.
Obviously, they could just go see the movie again when the theater would, presumably, not be full of noisy kids, so, the only reason to present those two ideas together like that means that the person is saying their chance to enjoy the movie is gone.

You shouldn't have stuck the "much rather" in there.

I assume Rudd is only going to host once this season. If that is indeed the case, speaking only for myself, I would have selfishly preferred they put on a repeat and bring him back later in the season for a proper SNL episode , kind of like what they did with a country musical guest who violated Covid protocol last season. But I assume Rudd has a busy schedule for early 2022 and couldn't make it work. But given a choice between what we got and that? I would chose that.

John Mulaney has recently hosted twice in the same season. It would more likely that they would bring Rudd back this season if they could to make-up for this one.

Like Daytripper, the premise of your comment is a false choice: They shouldn't have done this because they wasted their one chance with Rudd this season. If this show was their one chance with Rudd until 2023, then it was their one chance, and they did something with it.

If as you assume. Rudd is only going to host once this season, then that is true because of his schedule, not because he did this episode, which is what you are saying.
