That 90s Show (Netflix) - sequel series with Kitty and Red - premieres 1/19/23
Netflix has given a formal series green light to That ’90s Show, a followup to Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner’s hit That ’70s Show. Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp will anchor the spinoff, reprising their roles as Red Forman and Kitty Forman, respectively. They will executive produce That ’90s Show alongside its creators, That ’70s Show alum Gregg Mettler, who serves as showrunner, Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner and their daughter Lindsay Turner.
Set in Wisconsin in 1995, That ’90s Show follows Leia Forman, daughter of Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna (Laura Prepon), who is visiting her grandparents for the summer where she bonds with a new generation of Point Place kids under the watchful eye of Kitty and the stern glare of Red. Sex, drugs and rock ’n roll never dies, it just changes clothes.
There are currently no deals in place with other That ’70s cast members for the new series but the expectations is that a number of them, including Grace, Prepon and Ashton Kutcher, will make guest appearances, reprising their roles.
Picked up for 10 episodes, That ’90s Show also is executive produced by Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner under The Carsey-Werner Company which produced That ’70s Show and its offshoot That ’80s Show.
Chatter about a new incarnation of That ’70s Show has been percolating for years. Netflix has been particularly keen on the idea because of the big viewership That ’70s Show drew on the platform before it left in September 2020. The premise by Mettler, Bonnie, Terry and Lindsay Turner started getting traction late last year and the project was quickly set up for development at Netflix.
That ’70s Show aired on Fox for eight seasons from 1998-2006. Topher Grace, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Danny Masterson, Laura Prepon, Wilmer Valderrama and Lisa Robin Kelly starred in the period sitcom which focused on the lives of a group of six teenage friends living in fictional Point Place, Wisconsin, from May 17, 1976, to December 31, 1979. Rupp and Smith led the show’s older cast, often stealing scenes they were in.
Looking to capitalize on the popularity of That ’70s Show, Fox expanded the franchise with That ’80s Show, which could not replicate That ’70s Show’s success and had a brief run from January to May 2002. Set in 1984, it was not a direct spinoff, and the characters and storylines from both shows never crossed, but the main characters of each show, That ’70s Show’s Eric Forman, played by Topher Grace, and That ’80s Show‘s Corey Howard, portrayed by Glenn Howerton, were first cousins.
The franchise is now returning to Wisconsin with That ’90s Show after moving to San Diego for That ’80s Show.
This is the second classic Carsey-Werner sitcom to get a followup, joining Roseanne, which was revived, leading to spinoff The Conners on ABC.
Rupp is repped by Artists & Representatives and manager, Wright Entertainment. Smith is repped by Progressive Artists Agency and Pop Art Management. Mettler, whose most recent work includes Fox’s Call Me Kat, is repped by UTA and Ken Richman. The Turners are with Gendler & Kelly.

So they're going back in time for this after the last show?
Because by the end of That 70s Show, they weren't even trying to make it look retro anymore. Red was always drinking Budweiser (and that wasn't likely, for a Wisconsin-based blue collar worker) with the cans of the '00s.

While Red and Kitty were great characters, the show won't survive with them as the leads.
The only chance this has to work is if it also brings back the kids from the original - and not just as guest appearances.

That 70's Show is one of the rare shows that I can watch any episode when stumble across it in syndication and enjoy it.
This new show sounds terrible.

The twist should be that Red and Kitty are now in their 90s, and it's just old people getting high in a retirement home.

I can see Red still being a real hard-ass to everyone around him but softening into a big teddy bear around his grandkids.
It seems like characters from That 70s Show are dropping like flies. The girl that played Laurie, Tanya Roberts, Danny Masterson

Netflix has assembled the young series regular cast of That ’90s Show, a follow-up to hit sitcom That ’70s Show.
The new group of six teenage friends in Point Place, Wisconsin is led by Leia Forman, daughter of Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna (Laura Prepon) from the original series. Callie Haverda (Shut Eye) is set to play Leia, with Ashley Aufderheide (Emergence), Mace Coronel (Colin in Black & White), Maxwell Acee Donovan (Gabby Duran & The Unsittables), Reyn Doi (Side Hustle) and Sam Morelos cast as new teen characters opposite fellow series regulars Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp who are reprising their That ’70s Show roles as Red Forman and Kitty Forman, respectively.
I hear other That ’70s Show cast members, including Grace, Prepon, Mila Kunis, and Ashton Kutcher, are in negotiations to recur in the spinoff, which has a 10-episode order.
In That ’90s Show, it’s 1995 in Wisconsin and Leia Forman (Haverda), daughter of Eric and Donna, is visiting her grandparents for the summer, where she bonds with a new generation of Point Place kids under the watchful eye of Kitty (Rupp) and the stern glare of Red (Smith). Sex, drugs and rock ’n roll never dies, it just changes clothes.
Haverda’s Leia Forman is smart like her mom, snarky like her dad. Leia is craving adventure, she’s just not quite sure where or how to start. Until she discovers a best friend in the most unlikely of places: next door to her grandparents house in Point Place.
Aufderheide plays Gwen. Life gets more interesting for Leia when she meets this Riot Grrrl. Equal parts loyalty, rebellion and heart, Gwen is a dynamic powerhouse and the unofficial leader of the new generation of Point Place kids. Love Gwen. Fear her. Follow her.
Coronel plays Jay. He is charming and flirty – at least, he tries. It doesn’t always come out right. When he’s not hanging out with his best friend Nate or working at the local video store, he’s armed with a video camera and the whole world is his film set.
Donovan plays Nate. The polar opposite of his little sister, Gwen, Nate takes life as it comes, usually with a big open smile. He lets the gang ride in his van because there’s always something fun on the other side of the drive. He loves his family, his girlfriend and Garth Brooks.
Doi plays Ozzie. Everyone loves them some Ozzie. He’s insightful, sarcastic and has perspective beyond his years. Ozzie is gay and impatient with the world for not being as accepting as his friends.
Morelos plays Nikki who is focused, smart, and driven. From the outside, you could easily see her becoming a doctor or a lawyer. But inside, she has more rebellion than a frustrated debutante and her boyfriend Nate can scratch that itch.
The multi-cam That ’90s Show was created by That ’70s Show alum Gregg Mettler — who serves as showrunner — That ’70s Show co-creators Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner, and their daughter Lindsay Turner. The quartet executive produces alongside Rupp, Smith as well as Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner under the Carsey-Werner Company, which produced That ’70s Show and its offshoot That ’80s Show.
Aufderheide is repped by CESD, Mitchell Gossett at Industry Entertainment and attorney J.R McGinnis. Haverda is repped by Paradigm and Schuller Talent. Morelos is with Paradigm and De Passe Jones. Donovan is repped by Osbrink and Vault Entertainment.

I love That 70s Show so Ill definitely check this out but without even seeing them, some of the descriptions for the new teens make them sound really annoying. Im hoping thats just the way the descriptions are written and the kids themselves can bring better characters to life. The reason That 70s Show worked so well was because the cast was so likable and the reason That 80s Show was so terrible was because the cast was a bunch of stereotypical caricatures.

These look like kids, not teens. How old are they supposed to be?

The daughter is 15 or younger based on the 1995 setting. They cast aged appropriate instead of 20 year olds. Mila Kunis was 15 when the original show started.

So is this for Millenials? That 70’s show was geared toward the tail end of the Baby Boomers I guess. Red and Kitty would be part of the Greatest Gen (or right after).

If its set in 1995 and theyre 15 the kids would either be the youngest Gen Xers or the oldest millennials, depending on which rules you follow.

Like me.
And I'll tell you what, That 70's Show really got it about 85% right. It's pretty close to what the 70's were like.
Of course, it was so well written, the characters were so good, and the cast was so fantastic that younger AND older audiences could enjoy it. My daughter loves the show!
