re: SNL General Discussion Thread

Emma Stone has revealed that when you get inducted into the Five Timer's Club, the smoking jacket is just a prop that they expect you to return. She says she had to steal the one they "awarded" to her to take it home.

I have to say I am honestly surprised by that. I can see it is just a robe with a patch, but I figured people would be like Stone and want the souvenir.

A high-end smoking jacket like that costs $300 so I'm again surprised Lorne is not willing to hand them out to these multi-time hosts.

re: SNL General Discussion Thread

Maybe since they have been so many multiple hosts and the potential for more five timers it would be expensive to give out jackets.

Now who is going to be a ten timer or will they ever get somebody with that many hosting gigs?

$300 each is expensive for NBC?

Now who is going to be a ten timer or will they ever get somebody with that many hosting gigs?
Alec Baldwin-17
Steve Martin-16
John Goodman-13
Buck Henry (dead)-10
Tom Hanks-10
Chevy Chase-8, but he will never host again
Christopher Walken-7

I would say Scarlett Johansson (6) and Emma Stone (5) are the best bets for non-former cast members to get to 10.

Maybe Tom Hanks since he likes to drop by sometimes when he is not hosting and he will most likely still be doing big movies for the rest of this and the next decade to promote?

Maybe Tom Hanks, who has guest hosted 10 times, will be the next to guest host 10 times?

Why am I not surprised that NBC is too fucking cheap to actually gift the jackets instead of them being just a prop (I was already kind of assuming that). . Good for Emma for stealing one.

In a new interview with The New York Times, Eddie Murphy recalled how he was gutted by a 1995 joke made at his expense.

In 1995, during a Weekend Update bit called “The Hollywood Minute,” David Spade mocked Eddie Murphy for his box office flop, “Vampire in Brooklyn.” He showed a photo of Murphy and said, “Look, children, it’s a falling star. Make a wish.”
Murphy told the New York Times he felt like the crack was completely out of line. “It was like, ‘Yo, it’s in-house! I’m one of the family, and you’re fucking with me like that?’ It hurt my feelings like that,” he said. Murphy found the joke particularly disrespectful, knowing how he’s been credited with keeping SNL from being cancelled in the early 1980s.

Murphy also said, "So I thought that was a cheap shot. And it was kind of racist.
Racist? Really?

They should have done something for the guys who hosted at least 10 times like Hanks, Goodman, Baldwin, and Steve Martin.

Seth Meyers and Will Ferrell brought back a sketch that bombed or was never done on the show

Timberlake maybe? Since they get kinda nebulous about host/MG. Paul Simon is in the 5 Timers Club even though I think most of those were MG appearances.

Yeah, but he was in the 5 Timers the first time it appeared, which was over 30 years ago, so his early 50s at the time.

Although I'm surprised to read he hosted 4 times, I would have thought it a lot less and he made it to the 5TC more from musical guest appearances

The Five-Timers Club is for hosting.

Simon was inaccurately included in the club because he was the MG on the 100th show, which had no host, and is incorrectly remembered as a show he hosted.

If you counted musical guest appearances, "the club" would have many, many more members, including Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus, Eminem, Sting, Rihanna, Dave Grohl, Katy Perry.

Maybe Timberlake is out of the question after the arrest and after decades of him being popular people are finally realizing his music sucks.

Simon was included in the original sketch. In fact he was literally the first existing member introduced.

Here's the thing: the Five Timers Club is not a real thing. It was a bit for that specific Tom Hanks monologue. It was for fun. It has taken on a life of its own, to an extent, but this is not an official club or prize or achievement. This is a comedy show. It is just for fun.

In case this isn't sarcasm, I'm pretty sure everyone here already knows this.

That does not change the reality that Paul Simon has been the host of the show four times.

10/8/75
11/20/76
5/10/86 (co-host)
12/19/87

So, I guess we could turn this into a semantics debate about being the member of the club in a sketch or actually hosting the show, but if you want to go with the former, then I guess we can include Matt Damon, Fred Armisen, Ryan Gosling, Jon Hamm, and Martin Short to the list, since they have been identified as members on the show.

I'm just talking about really being the host of the show five times or more.

Emma Stone sure considers it an achievement. I think Justin Timberlake did, as well.

Hosting that many times, now, speaks to someone having longevity and continuing appeal in their career.
You don't keep getting asked back if you are not really good on the show.
You have to devote time and effort into a high risk, low reward proposition, so the hosts that willingly go back must have some strong feelings about the show.

Yes, it is something done just for fun on a comedy show, but it is also recognition of excellence. Who doesn't want that?

Since Paul Simon was the musical guest with no host, I would figure that he was pulling double duty it should probably count.

He was one of three musicals guests on the show, and Simon did not perform in the monologue slot as host (Bill Murray did).

But if anyone has Peacock and can watch the beginning of this episode 3/15/1980 and see if Simon is announced as host, that's great.
