re: SNL General Discussion Thread

Maybe it is recency bias or mostly covers people I saw when I started watching around 1989 or 1990.

This is my list

Phil Hartman
Dana Carvey
Mike Myers
Will Ferrell
Eddie Murphy
Amy Poehler
Kevin Nealon
Will Forte
Chris Rock ( I know he was under utilized but what he did with limited airtime was hilarious)
Kate McKinnon

Adam Sandler would fit in there but the list is only 10.

E! is airing those best of SNL shows with Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Jimmy Fallon, and Amy Poehler.

I miss those dvds and they don't make them anymore.

The only one of those "Best of SNL" DVDs I have is the TV Funhouse one I picked up at Big Lots for three bucks.

I never bought any of them because I was hoping they would release full seasons on DVD, especially the Eddie Murphy years.

Weren’t several of those released? I have several huge SNL sets somwhere, feel like they were complete season sets…

I think they only released the first five seasons on DVD (the classic era with Belushi, Aykryod, Chase, Murray, et al) and never went beyond that. I never bought those sets because I had already seen most of the episodes multiple times. Because of that, and being expensive, they were a low priority purchase for me.

Maybe with the demise of physical media and SNL airing for around 48 seasons and legal or copyright reimbursement issues with the musicians and bands that appeared over the years they will never release full season sets.

I'm sure the top 10 would heavily depend on when you watched the show the most. People seem to age out of this show which isn't unexpected as they bring in fresh people every few years. Like for me anyone pre 90s wouldn't crack the top 10 but that's just because I didn't find that brand of comedy funny. Even most of the 90s would probably come from the late 90s other than Myers.

I think they should get Dave Grohl to host a show in the future.

if they can get Lizzo and Meghan the Stallion to host why not him?

I was shocked that KISS and Guns N' Roses never performed on SNL.

A real shock with KISS since they are a NY band.

Dave is maybe the funniest guy in Rock. He'd be a great host.

KISS were not taken seriously in their heyday. They were popular with teenagers, but adults (like Lorne Michaels and the people booking SNL) almost certainly thought they were a clown act.

Before the 1990s, SNL never booked any metal or (very) hard rock bands.

Maybe somebody can start a petition to get them to perform on the show like Betty White.

Well, somebody could do that, but it likely would not work because nobody gives a shit about either of those bands in 2023.

They did have Fear on, but that was more due to Belushi convincing Lorne to have them appear (Lorne was probably hoping that Belushi would return the favor and make a guest appearance). I think Lorne regretted the decision pretty quickly.

They probably wouldn't have put Guns n Roses on back in the late 80s/early 90s due to Axl Rose's reputation for shit like this.

That was Season 7, no Lorne.

According to IMDb, the only promotional appearance Guns N' Roses ever made on a network talk or variety program was The Late Show with Joan Rivers in 1988

Fair point, then whoever let Belushi have them on, Jean Doumanian, Dick Ebersol, etc., just curious, has there ever been a "heavier" band on the show?

Rolling Stone cites Rage Against the Machine's "Bulls on Parade" as the show's heaviest performance

It wasn't until 2000, but AC/DC did a pretty heavy "You Shook Me All Night Long".

The Rock probably hosted SNL for the first time for that AC/DC performance.

Michael Jackson might have been interested in appearing on SNL to promote "Off The Wall" in 1979, but SNL did not book disco acts, and by 1983 when SNL would have done anything to have him on, Jackson was too big for SNL.

Would have been awesome if Ozzy and Randy had been on SNL as musical guests back in the Blizzard of Ozz days.
