Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman

I was vaguely aware that they licensed this, but I hadn't been following it (I guess the movie is in limbo?). They released a trailer:

Art looks spot on to the comic and they do a good job not giving away the premise. Also that cast...

Oh nice! I read the first few trades a few years ago and really enjoyed it, maybe I'll try to start reading it again in anticipation of this.

I loved the comic series although sometimes I had issues with Kirkman's uneven writing for some of the characters. I'll definitely check it out.

Latest trailer for the series dropped yesterday. It looks good.

It does but they spoiled everything with that trailer and the promo posters.

I haven’t seen the posters, but I think that if you don’t know the spoiler, the trailer is edited in a way that nothing is really spoiled.

I’m just one TBP away from finishing the series but I’ve been thinking I should just do a complete reread since it’s been a while and I don’t remember what was happening. Maybe this will help motivate me.

I don't think it spoils anything unless you already know (or you have it pointed out that it spoils something... )

Is this a Watchmen/Dark Knight Returns kinda thing?

I guess it depends on what you mean by that.

It's not like a dark deconstruction of superheroes or anything like that. It is a subversion of the normal Superman story and it is less PG than it looks, but it's still a bright costume superhero story at its heart.

I say this having not seen the episodes but having read Kirkman's comic.

Omni Man doesn’t wear a mask, doesn’t everyone know who he is?

I'll wait until they all drop before I watch.

I still haven't watched The Expanse S5 yet.

This show will lull you with a false sense of mediocrity, but then the end of episode 1 is shocking, if you’re unfamiliar with the comics like me. I was hooked after that.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman

I didn't know anything about the source material before coming into it, but read some reviews about it being for mature audiences, similar to The Boys. Well, I love superhero stuff, and love The Boys, so gave it a shot.

First episode final title card appears, and I'm like, hmmm there was a little blood, no big deal. What's with all the gruesome statements....

Then the after credits part hit. Ok yep. Lol

I watched the first 3, I like it enough to stick with it.

Holy fuck that was intense and awesome. Is this rated TV-MA? That end was unexpected and fucking brutal. Loved it.

I'm so glad the trailer didn't spoil anything like many of us (who read the comics) kinda feared.

I sort of had a suspicion something was going to happen. Hot damn that was crazy.

Episode 1 was nicely executed with that punch to the gut. I think in a pre-streaming era you probably hold that scene back for a couple episodes, but Amazon has to hook viewers off the bat.

Did read that in the comics, that scene/story is much further along in the story/issues.

Yeah, I think it's not until like issue 6 or so, and I think Kirkman said he wanted to wait longer but he was urged to push it up for much the same reasons as Amazon probably put it in the first episode, to get people hooked early.

Because of this, they had to alter the storyline a bit to bide time and give Invincible time to grow with his supporting cast without his whole world crumbling down first.
