When this was first talked about a few years ago that was the plan.

It's the perfect time now that The Blacklist just ended. Hopefully they get James Spader back as Robert California.

He was one of my least favorite characters on the final seasons. The more I think about this revival, the more I'm not down for it. A small time paper company in 2024? No Michael Scott? Don't think this has much of a chance unless they just do a single season of 10 episodes as fan service. Stanley, Phyllis, Creed, Kelly, etc -- they played their supplemental parts perfectly. They cannot be the face of the reboot.

re: The Office -- new series coming to Peacock
EXCLUSIVE: As Greg Daniels continues to work with a group of writers on what could become an expansion of The Office universe, Nathan For You co-creator Michael Koman has emerged as a leading creative voice. If Daniels’ new mockumentary exploratory project gets greenlighted to series, Koman will serve as the offshoot’s co-creator, Deadline has learned.
The potential Office follow-up, from Universal Television, remains in development.
As Deadline revealed exclusively in January, the prospective new series, which is not a reboot, would likely be set in a new office with new characters but live within the same world as the Steve Carell-led mockumentary series which follows employees at the Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. Daniels has indicated that a new Office iteration could follow a crew doing a documentary about a different subject.
Koman has the perfect background for that — Nathan For You, which he co-created with star Nathan Fielder, was a docu-reality comedy series, in which Fielder used his business background to try and help struggling companies. The series ran on Comedy Central for four seasons.
Additionally, Koman and Daniels share similar career start, having both come out of Saturday Night Live‘s writing ranks. There is a personal connection too. Since 2012, Korman has been married to Ellie Kemper, who joined the ensemble cast of Daniels’ The Office during the show’s fifth season.
Koman’s writing credits also include The Colbert Report, MadTV and Late Night With Conan O’Brien, for which he shared an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing For A Variety, Music or Comedy Program in 2007. He recently served as writer/co-executive producer on Girls5Eva.
Daniels adapted NBC‘s The Office for American audiences based on the hit BBC series of the same name from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The series premiered in 2005 with an ensemble cast that includes Carell, John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, B.J. Novak, Jenna Fischer, Mindy Kaling, Leslie David Baker, Melora Hardin, Kate Flannery, Brian Baumgartner, Ed Helms, Oscar Nuñez and Craig Robinson. The show ran for 9 seasons before concluding in 2013, with James Spader taking over as lead following Carell’s departure in Season 7.
While individual original cast members could presumably pop up in a new franchise series, a full-blown reunion appears to be out of the question, sources close to production reveal.
Koman is repped by UTA and Nelson Davis.

I read that and still don’t understand what this new version is going to be.
Is it a continuation or a completely new take on the Dundee/Mifflin Location?

So Modern Family could have been a spin-off that existed in the same universe? That's way too generic... If this isn't a dysfuntional office / business, then what's the point?

NBC can market it as being connected to The Office and characters of The Office could be in the new show. That's about it, I guess.

I mean it's still gotta be about a workplace of some sort, right? Otherwise keeping the name would just be baffling.
Also we already had our successful Office clone while it was airing, Parks and Rec. Complete with dud of a first season and breakout movie stars coming out of it.

Interesting casting. Both are great, if not traditionally 'funny'.

I watch The Office quite a bit... it's usually on as background noise or we'll watch an episode or two on CC. I'm intrigued as to how far they'll push frowned upon terms or jokes in 2024. I was watching a S3 episode (I think) the other day and they cut audio of Michael saying "retard"... which I totally get; but where do you draw the line and still maintain that awkward The Office vibe?
American Auto did a pretty decent job of being risque but not going over the line. It was never as funny as The Office but it had its moments.

If Always Sunny and Family Guy can still get away with edgy jokes, I think this new version can still use them and get away with it.
The writers aren’t afraid to tell the jokes. It’s the network that’s afraid to get cancelled.

re: The Office -- new series coming to Peacock
The new iteration of “The Office” has been picked up to series at Peacock, Variety has learned.
As has been previously reported, the show is not a reboot of spinoff of “The Office,” but rather a new mockumentary show with a new cast set in the same universe. For the first time since the show was first revealed to be in the works in late 2023, plot details are now available. The official logline states:
“The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”
It was also previously reported that Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore will lead the new ensemble cast, though exact character details remain under wraps. Production is scheduled to begin in July.
“It’s been more than ten years since the final episode of ‘The Office’ aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” said Lisa Katz, president of NBCUniversal Entertainment. “In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.”
Greg Daniels, who developed the American version of “The Office” for television, is co-creating the new series with Michael Koman. Both serve as executive producers along with Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, who created the original British version of the series, as well as Howard Klein, Ben Silverman and Banijay Americas. Universal Television is the studio.
Daniels opened a writers’ room in January 2024 to begin working on the new iteration of the hit NBC mockumentary sitcom, which ran from 2005 to 2013. The American “Office” took place in Scranton, Penn., and followed the staff of paper company Dundler Mifflin. It starred Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Ed Helms, Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak, among others. The show has maintained its popularity long after leaving the airwaves and found new life when it became available to stream.

I'm wondering who this series is supposed to be for. Any ties to The Office seem tenuous.

Re: The Office -- new series coming to Peacock
This whole things is dumb because they could have just made a mockumentary style show about employees at a news paper with no Office connection and not have to pay royalties to Gervais, Merchant and Daniels.
