That episode is kind of where I pinpoint the show getting too dumb for its own good. Up to that point Michael made dumb decisions or said stupid things, but that literally made him out to have no common sense and just buffoonish. I think that was a season four episode, which is where I’ve always said is when the show went downhill. I loved those first three seasons too but it just got so dumb.

I know driving the car into the lake is always cited as a low point for the show, but looking up when that aired (Season 4) there's certainly a lot of great moments and episodes following that. Just more inconsistent. I watched a few episodes of Season 5 over the weekend with in laws that included the Michael Scott Paper Company arc and a lot of the Holly stuff, which I really enjoyed still.

Exactly. Even though some of the story arcs weren't always golden the funny moments were plentiful throughout.

I'm all for anything The Office... but I gotta laugh as I look down the "TV Talk" page and see
The Office
Saved by the Bell
Dark Crystal
Battlestar Galactica
Hogan's Heroes
Just waiting on CHiPs, The Hulk, Dukes of Hazzard and The A-Team and my youth revisited will be complete.
It's like the saying goes, Hollywood is creatively bankrupt.

I’m probably in the minority with how early I think the show started going downhill, but I honestly think it was starting to go off the rails as early as season 4.
Season 1 the show was finding its footing, but still has some classic episodes. Season 2 is about as perfect a season of sitcom television as it gets. Season 3 is where the ‘decline’ technically started, but only in the sense that it was a step down from the greatness of season 2. It’s still a very good season. Season 4 I believe is where the flaws slowly became more and more evident. As the writers ran out of ideas, they had to rely on more outlandish situations, and had to flanderize the characters to a ridiculous degree. Kevin went from being a bit slow and oafish, to literally retarded. Andy and Ryan both went from flawed but likable, to completely unlikable (Michael arguably too). Where the characters once seemed like people you could realistically meet in an actual office, they slowly became cartoon character. If I could summarize it in a single sentence, the show lost its touch with reality.
Im pretty sure I only made it through six seasons before giving up on what was at one point, my favorite show on television at the time. The decline was that steep.

On the other hand, I agree Michael became more and more cartoonish over time. But let's call that early onset dementia brought on by the strain of managing a small paper company office.

It has to be somewhat out of touch with reality; otherwise it wouldn't be funny. The last thing I want to watch on TV is a recap of my actual day at work. Is doing parkour a realistic thing at work? No... but it was a damn funny episode.

I mean, I guess it's worth re-emphasizing: I loved the first 3 seasons. It's not that I can't handle a bit of non-reality in my shows, but it has to tow a fine line. Yes, there was absurdity in early Office, but it was well managed, and The Office felt like a realistic place that any of us could actually work at.
The character Kevin is the one who most immediately comes to mind for me for this. He went from a bit of a slow oaf (he was once afraid that corporate would discover that he had porn on his computer, a very Kevin thing), to being completely braindead in the later seasons.... there's a scene where he doesn't know the alphabet, and we're supposed to believe this guy can hold down a 9-5 job. And that scene where he talks baby talk to that one woman's baby in the office (forget her name) was extreme cringe.
Character development and fleshing out a character is one thing, but taking a quirk of a character and magnifying it to such a degree that that quirk defines the character is something completely different. See: flanderization

There was an article on Puck that says with the WGA strike ending, there will be a flood of announcements coming. One of them being The Office
"We’re also about to see a firehose of announcements of projects and castings that have been held back for fear of bad optics or violating guild rules. Greg Daniels is set to do a reboot of The Office, for instance."

I'm all for this IF they don't go woke. We watch the show all the time on CC and, yeah, there is probably much less the writers can get away with in 2024 than they did in 2008 --- only because social media will blow up with cancel culture nonsense.

The original series went on for much too long. Extending that overstayed welcome with a reboot is a very bad idea.

I agree if we are talking about NBC. If it's new content for Peacock where The Office is prominently featured, why not add more original streaming content that appeals to your most loyal subscribers?

Because adding an Office clone isn't going to up the subscriber numbers or create buzz like a direct sequel will. Like they care about the integrity of the product or something.

Most of the original cast (minus, say, Steve Carell, John Krasinski, and possibly Rainn Wilson) would happily come back for this...so why reboot it at all? Why not a mixture of the old cast and new faces?

Otherwise, you have Stanley, Phyllis, Creed, Oscar, Kevin, Angela --all played by actors ranging in age from their 50s to their 70s.
I understand that The Office was cringe-comedy, but if it turns out that all these senior citizens are still stuck working in that office, then the show is just a outright tragedy.
