It's official: CBS orders The Big Bang Theory spin-off Young Sheldon
CBS has officially given a series order to The Big Bang Theory spin-off Young Sheldon, which will chronicle the formative years of Jim Parsons’ character, EW has learned.
The half-hour, single-camera comedy will follow a 9-year-old Sheldon Cooper (Big Little Lies‘ Iain Armitage) living with his family in East Texas and going to high school.
As EW previously reported, Zoe Perry is attached to play Sheldon’s mother, who is portrayed on the flagship series by Perry’s real-life mom Laurie Metcalf. Lance Barber, Raegan Revord, and Montana Jordan will also star.
Parsons — who is set to executive produce the comedy alongside creators Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro, as well as Todd Spiewak — will also narrate the comedy as Adult Sheldon.
The spin-off comes as The Big Bang Theory, currently in its 10th season, is the No. 1 comedy in primetime, with CBS eyeing a two-season renewal should contract negotiations with the cast close.

He's not a bad child actor in Big Little Lies. He has a sweetness to him and expressive eyes. That said, he doesn't seem very funny, at least in that role.

I just don't see this being good. It already feels like The Big Bang Theory shouldbe ending rather than renewed for a couple more seasons. Now this with a younger and more annoying version of Sheldon. I can't see myself watching this.

I can't see that kid pulling off the part. He's fine on BLL, but people are going to be expecting a mini-Parsons and that kid is not that.

“Pilot” – 9-year-old Sheldon Cooper is a once-in-a-generation mind capable of advanced mathematics and science but learns that isn’t always helpful growing up in East Texas, a land where church and football are king, on the special series debut of the new comedy YOUNG SHELDON, Monday, Sept. 25 (8:30-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. YOUNG SHELDON moves to Thursdays (8:30-9:00 PM, ET/PT) as of Nov. 2. Iain Armitage, Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Annie Potts, Montana Jordan and Raegan Revord star. THE BIG BANG THEORY’s Jim Parsons is an executive producer and narrates as adult Sheldon.
While the vulnerable, gifted and somewhat naïve Sheldon deals with the world, his very normal family must find a way to deal with him. His father, George, is struggling to find his way as a high school football coach and as father to a boy he doesn’t understand. Sheldon’s mother, Mary, fiercely protects and nurtures her son in a town where he just doesn’t fit in. Sheldon’s older brother, Georgie, does the best he can in high school, but it’s tough to be cool when you’re in the same classes with your odd 9-year-old brother. Sheldon’s twin sister, Missy, sometimes resents all the attention Sheldon gets, but she also remains the one person who can reliably tell Sheldon the truth. Finally, there’s Sheldon’s beloved Meemaw, his foul-mouthed, hard-drinking Texas grandmother who is very supportive of her grandson and his unique gifts. For 10 years on THE BIG BANG THEORY, audiences have come to know the iconic, eccentric and extraordinary Sheldon Cooper. This single-camera, half-hour comedy gives us the chance to meet him in childhood, as he embarks on his innocent, awkward and hopeful journey toward the man he will become.

That whole thing was just Cringe Worthy . I don't see it lasting past one season.
And I realized the actor playing Sheldons dad was the Bully from BBT

This would have worked as a limited series to fill a gap in airing, such as Agent Carter for Agents of SHIELD. It could have been a one off special episode of BBT, or even a TV movie. I just don't see this having legs as a regular episodic series expected to run for several years.
And it's already run afoul by calling back to the original source material (the potato clock reference) and comic foreshadowing (radio shack comments). You just know there's going to be a run in with a young lactose intolerant student from New Jersey at some science fair sooner or later.

I'll eat my words and say I actually kind of liked it. Different than I was expecting it to be but in a way that worked to its advantage for me. I like that it doesn't play like a straight comedy and is a bit more of a dry humor. Also like the eighties setting and the Cooper family is alright (I like the mom and sister most). I'll keep watching.

I liked it. The ending of the episode was a kinda cool and there was good comedy throughout.
Nice to see Captain Proton again.
The actress playing his mom is doing a fantastic job.. I can totally imagine her as Sheldon's mom in TBBT.

I thought it was fairly decent although the trailer gave away most of the scenes in the first episode. show kind of reminds me of The Wonder Years.

Just not sure how long this can last.. as this kid grows over the next couple of years he's going to look less and less like Sheldon.

re: Young Sheldon (CBS) -- The Big Bang Theory Prequel -- Series Thread
Either the show does ok for a couple of season and the kids age/look is not an issue or it's a huge hit and on one will care. Look at how Hope & Faith totally replaced the daughter after season 1 with Megan Fox. Still ran two more seasons and that was a real meh level of show.
as for this one, I like that it's done with out a laugh track and in a different vibe than BBT, a show I've never been a fan of on any level. Even to the point of thinking Jim Parsons' 4 Emmy wins are BS, being Sheldon is such a one trick character IMO. I get that's totally unfair to Parson of course, but I'm a pure BBT internet hater.
Still this new show is least ok. The family is really well cast and the kid is flat out good at playing his role. I think the set up is going to wear thin rather quickly. It's not really a feel good show or a quirky show it's just this strange kid. Maybe two seasons? Being it's a spin off of a CBS mega hit so they are give it a little time. The lead in of BBT is also going to return a large ratings boost. Right?
It not like it's costing CBS the same salary level as BBT. They are going to let it run..

No laugh track, was a surprise and I thought it helped the show a lot.
I liked it, and will watch again.

I bailed on BBT 3 seasons ago, and figured this would suck. But I was in the room when my wife watched it and found myself enjoying it. The sister is probably my favorite character so far.

So am I to understand you will not be posting in this thread next week? Gentle ribbing aside, it is not a great show, but good enough that I am in. I thought it would be a horrible idea to spin off a show based on Parson's BBT character, but it was not even close to being a train wreck and has its charms.
