Who cares about Dany vs. the Lannisters? If this show doesn't end with Lyanna Mormont wielding Longclaw to kill the Night King, then everything else is meaningless.

I hated Cersei in season one and I've been waiting for her to die for years. But after the way she dealt with the High Sparrow in season six I was all like "long may she reign." It helps that Lena Heady gives one of the best performance on the show. She's just such a great character. Basically the citizens of Westeros in a bad position of picking the Mad Queen they know versus the Mad Queen they don't know.

Any chance that Tyrion was actually struck and dying in this battle and the events we actually see are the fever dreams of events played in his head, a la Jacob's Ladder and Mulholland Drive?

I think this possibility was set up in his first battle, where he was hit and passed out and when he wakes up, the battle is over.

Absolutely zero chance. If nothing else, entire scenes with dialogue took place before Tyrion even got there.

They could kill off everyone else, and I'd still be satisfied with this conclusion.

I was thinking the same thing after reading negative comparisons. Those are apples/oranges, IMO.

I liked MM, Sopranos, and Wire, too...but they weren't necessarily the greatest things ever. They also had their boring moments and missteps (not so much The Wire, but the other two definitely).

Also, consider some of the disadvantages GoT faces vs. those three:

(1) Having to meet expectations of avid (rabid) book readers who will pick at every variation from original;

(2) Having to overcome resistance to the "genre" labeling that sci-fi, fantasy, westerns, comedies, and others face. Those shows face a high hurdle in order to be taken seriously...something "contemporary" shows don't.

(3) Multiple location shootings, multiple expensive sets & costuming, CGI costs, weapons & animal training, fight choreography, etc...again, much more challenging than the standard things for those other shows.

(4) Huge ensemble cast & characters...often separated by geography so that a plethora of plot lines have to be interwoven without confusing, teasing, or frustrating the audience.

(5) Overcoming the "believeability" factor when attempting to portray supernatural creatures/events supporting serious drama. That's not an easy task.

As McNabb said, it's a different kind of show. The fact that it has captivated so many people (much credit to GRRM, of course, but the show could have been a disaster with poor translation from page to screen) and is being so passionately discussed is a great credit to those involved. Personally, I think GoT should be measured against similar genre shows telling epic stories...and in that, it's head and shoulders above any competitors in terms of quality acting, writing, music, cinematography, costuming, set design, and all other aspects of film-making. It's not perfect, but at this point it is almost unique in its field (particularly for the small screen).

I think the main question that should be asked is this: How well does GoT meet the goals of the filmmakers and the expectations of the audience. Personally, I think that it does both very, very well. As much as I like those other shows (along with Breaking Bad and other acclaimed shows), I have much more anticipation for each episode of GoT than any of those shows.
