13 Reasons Why (Netflix) -- Series Thread

13 Reasons Why is a new series from Netflix adapted from the best-selling books by Jay Asher. It follows teenager Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) as he returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker (newcomer Katherine Langford) - his classmate and crush - who tragically committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Will Clay be one of them? If he listens, he'll find out how he made the list. Through Hannah and Clay's dual narratives, 13 Reasons Why weaves an intricate and heart wrenching story of teenage life that will deeply affect viewers.

Not exactly an uplifting subject matter for a TV series to entice you all to binge. Knowing this forum, this will probably have limited appeal.

My wife who is a teacher so reads a lot of YA novels absolutely hated the book. I mentioned the show to her and she said the plot was so bad even with the good reviews she won't watch it. Looks like I'll check out the first episode on my own.

Part Dawson's Creek. They are all too deep for their age.
Part After School Special. Lots of eye roll inducing messages.
Part Pretty Little Liars. Super secret mysteries.

Can't deny it is compelling.

I watched this. I pretty much agree with the issue this NYT article points out: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/30/a...tv-review.html

It is really repetitive. And the fact that they changed it from Clay listening to the tapes in one night to being drawn out really hurt the show in my opinion. I'm sure there was a better way to structure this. I thought the acting was generally really good.

Kate Walsh was absolutely spectacular, as was the guy who played her husband. Just thinking about some of their more emotional scenes is enough to make one teary-eyed.

I was surprised at how graphic the actual suicide was in the last episode. I was cringing.

re: 13 Reasons Why (Netflix) -- Series Thread

I just binged over the past couple of days. There was issues with the writing. But, I thought this show was a little bit better than other teen shows on. I liked the acting by the main female lead and I agree with another poster on Kate Walsh's performance. If there is a season 2, I hope they don't go where I'm thinking they will with the photographer kid.

Finished this last night over 3 days. What a hard watch. Makes me glad I never went to high school here. And terrified for my daughter, although that's still a ways off.

Has it been confirmed there will be a season 2?

Not yet. It's a buzz worthy show though, so I'm sure it will get renewed.

Oh ok. I'm kinda torn on if I want to have one more season. The 1st one was pretty brutal even though it was kinda repetitive. The actors who played Hannah and Clay were compelling enough for me to keep watching.

And I think the ending struck the right balance between leaving it open to the viewer to interpret what happens next and wanting find out what *actually* happens next.

Read the book, know the story, but just didn't have the series grab me. I watched an episode or two and bailed. If my wife decides she wants to watch it, I'll probably join in, but I don't really have much of an interest on my own.

re: 13 Reasons Why (Netflix) -- Series Thread

I really enjoyed this show, however I found it to be a hard watch, especially towards the end with the rape and suicide scenes.

While I get the criticism of Clay taking forever to finish the tapes, it did not really bother me because every person deals with death differently. Clay loved Hannah, so I understand that it would be tough for him to get through the tapes.

I wish there was one more episode to wrap up the lawsuit storyline. Clay and Hannah is what hooked me to this season, and I don't think I would care for a second season following the other students.

I actually think the show is missing the mark quite a bit but it's very well acted and if it's truly helping people, that's good.

With two young girls, it's a brutal show to watch.

Fucking hell Clay! Listen to the tapes! Take forever!

Wow. The rape scenes and the suicide scene were tough to watch.

Poor Jeff. That one hurt. Courtney should just fuck off.

So, season 2 is a school shooting aftermath?

re: 13 Reasons Why (Netflix) -- Series Thread

I thought this was pretty good. A well designed show for binge watching as seemingly every episode ended on a cheap cliffhanger. I could have banged it out in 2 days if I had the free time to do that.

All the characters and situations were pretty cliche and the delivery of the message was rather heavy handed but this was a show aimed towards teenagers so it makes sense that it was done this way. The performances were pretty good so I enjoyed it overall.

I'll echo that the rape and suicide scenes were brutal to watch but I thought they were well done because, well, rapes and suicides are brutal. No need to hold back.

Sure seems that way. I wonder if they'll show any fall out from the Hannah trial too.

I thought it was very well done, but difficult to watch. I just couldn't turn away.

You know they're going with the photographer kid to be a school shooter for Season 2.

That could be very interesting as well.

Ross Butler (who plays Zach) is also on Riverdale. They are recasting his role on Riverdale's second season, so that would be a good indicator that there will definitely be a second season of 13 Reasons Why.

13 Reasons Why Nearing Season 2 Renewal.

However, there is a potential writer's strike next week. That could affect production of a 2nd season.

re: 13 Reasons Why (Netflix) -- Series Thread

Sort of reminded me of a really depressing season of Veronica Mars without the humor. It was really tough to watch in certain parts especially the suicide, and Katie Walshs acting may have almost been too good, ut was brutal. Not sure id want to watch a second season. I also worry that in its own way to a young mind it could actually present suicide as an option and that worries me if high schoolers actually watch it. The high school interactions were very believable. Certainly an impactful show.

Binged it over the past week. I thought it had a very nickelodian type feel (and some of the actors looked about 30), I'm sure it's hard to shoot high school scenes without spending big bucks, but some of it was eye rolling bad. The leads were good though, and the concept itself was very compelling. Had to keep watching to see who was up next. That last episode was tough though, and the actual suicide scene is just haunting.

It felt like a very dragged out after school special to me. It was ok but jesus it should've been at most 10 episodes. How bout 10 reasons why next time.

re: 13 Reasons Why (Netflix) -- Series Thread

Just watched it. My wife teaches middle school and the district she works in has had a number of suicides in the past year. We also have a 7 year old daughter so the last episode was hard to watch. Pretty depressing. I also think at the end of the day hard to stop someone who has made the choice to end everything. Reminds me of the scene in Bowling for Columbine when the Southpark guys just say High School sucks and if the kids could have just realized small part of life and it would be over soon enough.
