Re: 13 Reasons Why (Netflix) -- Series Thread
Very late, but I just finished watching season 1 this week.
I finished 10 episodes in 1 day and then the last 3 last night.
What a dark, depressing and tragic season. Very tough watch and definitely not for everyone. I thought it was really compelling and the acting by Kate Walsh, Dylan Minnette and especially Katherine Langford was fantastic. The tape listening part, which I did find the most compelling, did kind of drag after Clay got distracted multiple times.
I looked at this as some really bad kids pushed a very vulnerable young woman over the edge. I felt really bad for Hannah in the finale where she was hoping to give life another chance, but things just fell apart for her starting with her losing her parents money and then the guidance counselor not really taking her that seriously. And yes the suicide scene was a really tough watch along with Bryce's rape of Hannah. And all of this started from a stupid upskirt photo that embarrassed her and ruined her reputation.
After finishing this, I'm going to take a day or two off before I try to take on season 2. I need a break from how heavy this show was.

So I also watched the 30 minute supplemental feature for the show called "Beyond the Reasons" It's listed on Netflix as a separate show. There is a 1 hour episode for season 2.
It's a good watch and adds a lot of context to the characters and their motivations. Lots of good interviews from the cast, creative team and actors and even medical professionals.
It's a little heavy handed and I'm sure most of you don't feel like watching something like that right now, but I really did appreciate seeing it.

Just finished season 2. I liked it, though not as much as season 1. This one didn't have the same sense of urgency, without the plot device of the tapes. But I liked exploring more about the other characters. Some things felt really odd and out of place--like throwing in the Hannah/Zach secret relationship. Bryce went full psychopath in that conversation with his mom.
I'm sure season 3 will deal more with Tyler, because that story is definitely not over. And there's Justin's drug problem and Chloe's pregnancy--I imagine those will be big factors.
Man, that last episode--my eyes may have gotten a bit misty at times.

Netflix has edited out the suicide scene from season 1.
It was a really dark and unpleasant scene, but it was part of the story. I'm glad I saw it and appreciated the scene for it's part in the story. But that's bullshit that Netflix caved to the pressure from parents and doctors who complained about the show.

I mean, if cutting it out potentially keeps even one kid from trying it themselves, it's worth removing; no?

That scene was needed for the full story... now it just feels like a regular tv show.

Well I'd imagine the vast majority of people interested in the show already watched s1, which came out well over 2 years ago now and it's easy enough to download the non-edited version.

I still have season 1 on my “to finish” list. I wasn’t are there was such a seen, but seems odd to take it out after the fact. Too bad they can’t post two versions.

I just think it's a spineless move by Netflix to try to keep subscribers and not have bad press from ignoring parents and doctors. When creating entertainment IMO, you do not let the public dictate how you create it and whether or not you should keep certain scenes, actors and such IMO. It sets a bad precedent and it's silly too since it's 2 seasons after the fact.
There is a clear warning graphic before every episode that says this is a show that depicts a teen's suicide.
The scene is graphic and sad, but it's not like you're watching a snuff film of an actual teen committing suicide. If anything I think this show should help families and parents see the signs of depressed suicidal teens and lead them to get the help they need.

I totally agree DJariya… That scene while graphic was needed for the whole story. I have 3 girls (24, 19, 15) and we had some nice conversations after watching this. We went over how she made a lot of mistakes that could have prevented half the shit she went through in the series.

you would be surprised on how much this show has affected kids. coming from the school field, half the kids are using it as a symbol of coolness. i know. i know.
kids these days are far crazy than ever before. while i disagree with the removal of the scene, i am not surprised

Netflix said they will take down any pirated version of the episode. You shouldn't seek out to watch a death scene for your morbid curiosity. There is a lot of context in the show that sets it up. She's raped, bullied and sexually harassed.
There is a DVD of the first season, which is unedited.

Meh... I saw it already, so they can make all the changes they want.
You aren't joking... what a piece of shit S2 was. It's so bad that I'm not even going to give S3 a chance - especially since the story is so far removed from the original premise.

This is a real case of should've just been one and done. I get that it generally isn't in Netflix's business model, but this story is being stretch so ridiculously. Who the fuck cares if a rapist was murdered? Why are they trying to redeem him? This season is just really bad and the way it is structured is terrible too.

Re: 13 Reasons Why (Netflix) -- Series Thread
I actually really enjoyed it. There’s some great acting from the one that almost did the shooting. Narratively it’s weird, though, with it mostly from the POV of a character that wasn’t in the first 2 seasons. And I imagine the attempt at making the rapist a sympathetic character will not sit well with many.
I was lukewarm on season 2 and probably wouldn’t have watched this, but when the teaser showed that this would be a murder mystery, I decided to go ahead and watch. And now after seeing the cliffhanger that indicates a full on shitstorm catching up to these characters next season, I’m looking forward to seeing how all this ends.
I know my post seems a little contradictory, but it’s just that this season is hard to talk about without majorly spoiling the final episode.

The acting is good. They do the best with what they were given, but a lot of what is given is bad.
Take a shot everytime someone says "I'm soooo sorry that happened to you".
