This show is basically your eyes glued on to the screen at all time or you'll miss something, especially in the way they handle a lot of side characters. So yeah, I'll be interested to know how it's doing in viewership as well.
I think the narration helps immensely. Obviously you have to read the dialog but the dialog is not overly complicated with long sentences and rapid-paced conversations. Comparing it to another foreign language show that aired on American tv, Deutschland 83, this seems to have been made with an American audience in mind.

It does. Sometimes it feels like I'm being spoon-fed - which is why I normally hate it when a show/movie has a lot of narration. But I'm finding the narration helpful a few times per episode. The subtitles do make it more difficult to follow because you're spending less time looking at the characters/happenings due to reading - and makes it especially more difficult in a show with so many characters and with a lot of things going on. Narration is appreciated.

Re: Narcos (Netflix) -- Series Thread -- Medellin cartel/Pablo Escobar

my first language is spanish and i thought Escobar's accent (instantly realized spanish wasn't his first language) was a bit distracting. Other than that, it was great. Can't wait for season 2.

Re: Narcos (Netflix) -- Series Thread -- Medellin cartel/Pablo Escobar

I watched 5 episodes. I would hardly call this a great series. Yes the narration helps at times, but there's simply too much of it. It's fine to fill in the blanks, especially historical background and filling in big jumps in time, but it's completely superfluous when it merely describes what you can see with your own two eyes on the screen. At times, it's likes "having a really bland guy reading you the Wiki entry on Pablo Escobar" (I stole that from a review). And the quality of acting/dialogue varies wildly. Sometimes brilliant, sometimes (granted, not that often) like a bad afternoon soap.

That said, good enough to keep me watching. The fact that I'm familiar with the story, and that I've been to Medellin a few times helps keep up my interest, since I often go "I've been there" or "I recognize this". That familiarity might also explain why I find some of the narration superfluous while it might be useful to others.

I only started for Pedro Pascal because I still miss the Red Viper, but I am 6 episodes in am really loving the show. All the actors are really good, and I love the dedication to the smallest of touches. Look forward to more of the show. It's really great.

Re: Narcos (Netflix) -- Series Thread -- Medellin cartel/Pablo Escobar

finished and it took me 3 days (kids kept on walking in)

man what an awesome show. I know the story of Pablo Escobar but to see some of it put into an actual story is cool. Not all of it is in the show but some of it is great story telling.

Who the f would have thought netflix would be producing some high quality shows?

Back when I was using Netflix to rent DVD's via mail (there was no streaming business) when I wasn't using Blockbuster to do the same thing, I wouldn't have dreamed it. But from the time of S1 of House of Cards, it hasn't been hard to imagine.

I was talking to a buddy about this and it's always interesting to me when watching stories of rampant violence what the other side of life looks like. There are still people walking down the streets. There are still people going to the market and church, kids going to school. It can be difficult to get a clear picture of rampant violence in the context of daily life. Even in the worst areas of the U.S. with ridiculously high crime rates, there are people who live there and go about their daily activities.

Much like Walter in Breaking Bad (a fictional person), Escobar had more money than he knew what to do with and still needed more money and more power. At a certain point, the money isn't even about what it can by, it's just a way to keep score.

Really liking it but it's kind of weird how the DEA guy has been in the country so long and still doesn't even know basic Spanish. or the larger issue of thr DEA bringing him in not knowing the language at all.

I mean, it's like.. you would think that the CIA would want to have workers in places they can speak the language.. but then again... CIA.. right.

And at the same time, I can absolutely see that happening. It is a government agency after all.

Just finished season 1 and really liked it.

My wife watched it last year, so we are ready for tomorrow.

So is this 12 AM PST launch time the norm for Netflix or just Narcos?

Re: Narcos (Netflix) -- Series Thread -- Medellin cartel/Pablo Escobar

Having watched only one episode of S2, but knowing the real story, I wonder...

Spoiler:

I thought they would finish everything in the second season, after Escobar escapes from prison he's killed (In real life he escaped in7/22/92, and then he was killed in 12/2/93). I guess he survived S2.

Re: Narcos (Netflix) -- Series Thread -- Medellin cartel/Pablo Escobar

S2 Ep 4 was a masterpiece.

Spoiler:

So they changed the story from real life. Carrillo (Martinez in real life) was the one that captured Escobar. This change helps the story a lot, of course. And since Martinez is still alive, it would be troublesome to show him as a kid killer.

I'm almost at the half of the season and have to agree with Chris, really tense episodes.

Re: Narcos (Netflix) -- Series Thread -- Medellin cartel/Pablo Escobar

I wrapped this up earlier today. It was great.

It's
Spoiler:
set up for a third season, as the remaining cartels don't have to worry about Escobar being around. Looks like that season would follow Pedro Pascal.

I can't believe it's been a year - feels like the time flew by in between seasons.

José Padilha and Eric Newman will continue to executive produce the show, which is produced by Gaumont International Television for Netflix.

Re: Narcos (Netflix) -- Series Thread -- Medellin cartel/Pablo Escobar

If they go historically after Colombia they can move to Mexico. Mexico's drug lords were even bigger, richer than Colombia's. Some were not as violent, compared to Escobar specially, but they were violent.

And depending how deep they want to go, they can show even more how the USA, in general, has its part in all of this.
