Narcos (Netflix) -- Series Thread -- Medellin cartel/Pablo Escobar

https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...74&oe=56762344

Narcos chronicles the gripping real-life stories of the drug kingpins of the late 1980s and the corroborative efforts of law enforcement to meet them head on in brutal, bloody conflict. It details the conflicting forces - legal, political, police, military and civilian - that clash in an effort to control the world's most powerful commodity: cocaine. The series re-partners creator and executive producer José Padilha (Elite Squad, RoboCop) with acclaimed Brazilian actor Wagner Moura (Elite Squad, Elysium) as a captivating Pablo Escobar alongside Boyd Holbrook (Gone Girl) and Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) as real-life DEA agents Steve Murphy and Javier Peña. The series also features powerful performances by Colombia's Juan Pablo Raba (El corazón del océano), British theater star Joanna Christie (Once), Mexican sensation Stephanie Sigman (also seen later this year in the next Bond installment, Spectre), Colombian actor Manolo Cardona (Covert Affairs), Brazil's renowned André Mattos (Elite Squad), beloved Puerto Rican actor Luis Guzman (Boogie Nights) and the stunning Ana de la Reguera (Eastbound & Down, Nacho Libre) from Mexico. Eric Newman (Children of Men), the team of Doug Miro and Carlos Bernard (Sorcerer's Apprentice) and Chris Brancato (Hannibal) also serve as executive producers on the series. Narcos is produced by Gaumont Television for Netflix. All ten (10) episodes of Narcos will premiere on Friday, August 28.

Trailer looks great. I'll have to check this out.

I wonder if this is a one and done type thing. There's only so much story you can tell with this.

No Vince Chase playing Pablo Escobar? For shame...

I made a mistake - I was actually already on episode 10. What a great series from beginning to the end and it even bummed me out that I thought it would end after 10-episodes. They'll make season 2 no doubt.

Episode 4 so far. It's getting very good. At first I wasn't a fan of the voice over narration format, but by now I realize it was a perhaps necessary choice given the scope of the show. Kind of has a documentary reenactment feel overall, but it works well. They do a good job keeping each episode focused and interesting. So far it seems like one of the better shows Netflix has done.

I also find the Entourage references extra amusing because Escobar in this does bear a slight resemblance to Vinny Chase playing the character.

I just watched the first episode after it popped up on my Netflix screen. I had never heard of it.
I'm hooked! Can't wait till I have more time to watch the remaining episodes!

Finished the first episode... it's decent so far - although I'm going to assume they took a lot of artistic license on the events (which they pretty much warned us at the start).

The first episode had a lot of subtitles. If it stays at or close to this amount of subtitles, I wonder if it'll turn off the average Joe from watching.

It does have that much subtitles throughout.

I'm liking it. The documentary "Cocaine Cowboys" is good companion to this series from the Miami side of things.

I'm really impressed in how Adrian Grenier threw himself into that role of Pablo Escobar.

I think you're talking about Matthew Rhys.

Not enough wigs for him to take the role.

I've watched 4 episodes so far and you're right - it still has a lot of subtitles.
It's definitely one of the better shows that should attract a lot of viewers, but I wonder if the frequent use of subtitles are making people give up. I'd like to know how this show is doing viewership-wise.

If it wasn't for the fact that I understood the language fairly well, I would probably have been a little pushed away by the fact that this is essentially 90% a foreign language show. Not enough to not watch it, but I think a lot of Netflix users have it on sort of in a state of paying attention but not paying attention.

This show is basically your eyes glued on to the screen at all time or you'll miss something, especially in the way they handle a lot of side characters. So yeah, I'll be interested to know how it's doing in viewership as well.

I'm not aware of Netflix publicly releasing viewership numbers, even though they know viewership numbers better than anyone except other streaming services. HBO can kind of figure out how many people join up to see GoT and then drop HBO afterwards. Some DVR information gets reported back about shows, but mostly it's just statistical models. For instance, I watch all my network shows OTA, so I never show up anywhere. But supposedly the statistical models account for that (with varying degrees of accuracy).

I'm not sure it'd be any more accurate, but maybe there's some information somewhere about the top torrent downloads or something. I don't know where to get that information, but I do remember reading Game of Thrones is the most pirated TV show. They have to get that information somewhere.

The only nitpick I have, being fluent in Spanish, is that the Spanish subtitles are forced. Hopefully when the Blu-ray comes out they'll be removable.

Re: Narcos (Netflix) -- Series Thread -- Medellin cartel/Pablo Escobar

I've noticed comments on my FB feed and folks are digging the show but some of the more hardcore fans are saying that Wagner Moura was the wrong choice, because his Spanish sucks and isn't even Colombian - accent wise. Wagner is Brazilian, so his native tongue is Portuguese, and spent 5 months learning Spanish. Yeah, I'd agree it's a bit rusty and some of the words sound funny, because he can't help rolling some of the words, but he was chosen to play Pablo Escobar because he's a good actor. Watch Elite Squad and get back to me on his abilities. The first film I ever saw him in was VIPs, where he was this master of disguise, and I was blown away by his role(s).
