No, the Chief was at the mayor son's ceremony. I guess he got a haircut, too. (?)

I thought exactly that too. The way they were cutting back and forth and the looks she was giving Ani were making me think Felicia would kill her.

My initial thought when Frank got kidnapped by the Mexicans was that they were in bed with Chassani all along and that Felicia, being Mexican as well, was in cahoots with them. Thought the show would end with all our heroes dead and Felicia burning the evidence. Real piss in your cereal type ending.

OK, I didn't notice him. Only on TD2 can someone take a 9mm to the chest and walk away.

And oh yea, for good measure they just had to get one final twist in: the orphans of the executed couple were the product of an illicit affair with the very man who murdered their parents.

That never occurred to me. I kind of knew they were setting us up for a tearful meeting of the women in Venezuela because they included the scene where Vince Vaughn tells Bezeredes where and when to meet his wife, juuuust in case he doesn't make it.

They really did telegraph that one.

Just as good was Ray after the cabin heist basically telling Ani that it was all so easy and that he would be on the boat early.

I think there are plenty of actors who aren't working regularly in film, but not considered washed up who would be inclined to take this series. It's a much shorter commitment than a regular cable series and a hell of a lot less than a network TV series and working with HBO still has clout in the industry.

The biggest unresolved mystery is who approved this abortion of a season.

Can you imagine the looks on the faces of the HBO executives as they're previewing this?

HBO’s Michael Lombardo defended “True Detective” Season 2 to a roomful of TV critics on Thursday afternoon, when the programming president also said he’d be open to a third season.
“I think [creator] Nic Pizzolatto is one of the best writers working in television today,” Lombardo told critics in the Beverly Hilton ballroom. “I think he takes a big swing.”
“If he wanted to do another season, I told him our door is open,” he continued. He reiterated: “I’d love to do another season with him. I think he’s a spectacular writer.”

“I think the show works … He’s a bold storyteller,” Lombardo said. “I mean that only in the best possible ways.”
When asked, Lombardo stated that he would not place rules or restrictions on Pizzolatto for a Season 3 to make it more like the hit first season, which starred Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan.
Season 2 of the anthological show, which many have summed up with the adjective “weird,” stars Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch. Lombardo said he believes that the yet-to-air season finale will be a “satisfying” one to viewers.

Lombardo is a pro, avoiding another Josh Trank situation. Now what did he really think

Is the guy with the sunglasses in the photo above the Mexican who killed Frank? Was he in collusion with the Vicci folks, or was he just pissed that Frank screwed him out of business by torching the casino?

i thought the visual style of the show was good and i appreciate the 45 minute aerial footage of the LA freeways. now if i end up there, i know it well enough to forgo a roadmap.

velcoro not having another filthy ginger for a son = happy ending.

i wonder if the news report will even happen or even matter. it almost needed Nails saying "forget it bezzerides, it's chinatown"

For those few of you that are going to miss this weekly dose of characters you don't care about in a storyline that doesn't make sense, just a reminder that THE LEFTOVERS comes back in October!

Re: True Detective (S2E08) -- Season Finale -- "Omega Station" -- 8/9/15

Some aspects of the finale I enjoyed.... the shootout/robbery with Frank and Ray was cool... and I have no problems with a downer of an ending - it feels real when the bad guys get away once in a while. It was messy and wasn't tied up in a nice clean bow - and that's perfectly fine with me.

I agree that the episode could've been shorter - they really milked some scenes there. Are they getting paid by the minute?

I guess Ray wanted to die - otherwise his actions don't really make any sense at all. Couldn't lose them long enough to ditch the car? Is it really wise to lead the guys who are trying to kill you into the woods?

So Frank would've lived if he didn't whine about not getting a ride back to the city? Or if he just gave the guy the suit?

It was still a horrible season. Trying WAY too hard to set a mood by pounding us over the head with it. The way they kept using that singer was simply comical - felt almost like "There's Something About Mary" where that band would keep popping up playing their songs.

Even though I was disappointed in the finale, S1 was good - even when it was slow. It felt more organic. S2 felt like they were just trying hard to recreate S1 while adding some extra sauce for good measure. They failed miserably.

If there's a S3, I'll watch it because it'll be a self-contained season with different actors, story, etc. Hopefully they learn their lesson for this huge mess of a season.

It is not. Just another case of all _________ look alike.

No connection to Vicci corruption, just hardcore cartel guys from Mexico....perhaps more at home in Breaking Bad than True Detective. By torching The Lux, Frank deprived them of their coke distribution deal as per their agreement.

Pretty sure no. They had already dug a grave out there, be silly not to use it.

Disagree. It looked like they were going to give him a pass because he turned over the $$$. They were square at that point.

I thought it was just pride that kept him from giving up his suit, but I was reminded that the diamonds were sewn in the liner.

Frank had diamonds in his pocket, which is why he gave up on the $1 million in cash so easily. But, yeah, had he not opened his mouth about getting a ride back, he would have been left alive.

As for Ray, I still can't figure out how they found him at the school in the first place (were they just staking out the area in case he showed up there), and have to confess I originally thought that was a bomb and not a transponder, since Ray was just standing around and standing around. He had so many GOOD options for getting out of there. Why not just take the money and walk a few blocks down the road and lift another car? Better yet, before doing that, why not pay someone off to drive the car out of there for him? That would have given him a great opportunity to escape.

Nah, he was going to die because the writer wanted him to die. I mean, in theory, it seemed like they were about to walk away but he brought up the ride which led to the whole suit thing (then I'm sure they would have killed him naked)

But yeah, it just felt like these characters were forced into the death situation for no other reason than to kill them - Guess he didn't want the complaints like folks did with Rust surviving last season. But meh. more needless deaths for the sake of needless deaths.

Re: True Detective (S2E08) -- Season Finale -- "Omega Station" -- 8/9/15

I also get what he was trying to do with the suit thing, but again, he needed some help to tighten it up more... much like the rest of the material in the show - The suit represented that life style. His connections (Aside from the diamonds), him not wanting to give it up was him basically saying he's not willing to give up that life. to strip himself of who he has become and to run away from it all.

He was pretty much a dead man given how Nic telegraphed all those deaths so fucking hard in those overplayed tropes. But you could see what he was trying to do but really didn't do a great job at doing.

In the end, that's this season. A lot of good intentions and it could have been a really good season of television had he just allowed himself some help to tighten those edges and rewrite some of those aspects of it. What it ended up being was a fairly big mess that you can easily forget about.

I'll give season 3 a chance if there is one. But man, HBO shouldn't rush him at all for it and let it get polished up before going into production. Because this was one messy turd of a season.

So I have yet to watch this season, but is it THAT bad? I was really iffy on the cast (going from Woody and Matthew to Vince and Colin is a huge step down) but was hoping the story will be at least good. Was it overall just bad acting or was everything a complete waste?
