Closing scene: Ray opens an envelope with the word "Murderer" written on it. He reads the card within and says one word: "Stan?" FADE TO BLACK

Only ninety more minutes of hate-watching left.

Unrealistic expectations aside, this season was decidedly mediocre. I thought the finale was realistic......but not entertaining at all. I won't be back for season three.

I'll give them 2 episodes next season, but if it seems more like 2 than 1, I'm out. Some good acting this season, but just awful, uninteresting writing....

It's almost like two different writers wrote these seasons. I hope, like others have suggested, he gets some help for season 3.

I don't see a downer of an ending like that helping what is the popular opinion of this season. I will admit if it wasn't for Frank I would not have been interested. I don't think the writing was bad, just a really really uninteresting story.

Why on God's Green Earth did that finale need to be 90 minutes long? Hell, cut Frank's staggering desert exsanguination and Ray's prolonged search for cell service on I5 and in Sequoia National Forest and you'd have a 60 minute show right there.
Any idea where Mrs Semyon and Ana were heading in that last scene? Were we supposed to know?
At least we got to see the final set from The World's Saddest Acoustic Singer.

Anyways, that was a pretty lame ending. I mean, sure, if you wanna kill off the protagonists, that's fine (though I didn't give a shit if they lived or died). But there was no payoff! I'm here waiting for the bad guys to eat some shit (the Russian wasn't enough), and we don't even get that. Just some possible news story. What a fucking gyp!

For what was otherwise a very messy season, I thought the finale was a somewhat satisfying end. Sure, we didn't need to see Frank's long extended walk bleeding to death and reliving his shitty childhood or Ray desperately trying to upload his goodbye recording with shitty cell service.
at him being the actual father of Fatty from the DNA test.
As slop said, the epilogue didn't really work for me. It still sort of left things in limbo. I would have had Ani express mail that evidence to the Vinci DA's office or a trustworthy judge. Then maybe we could see a news report with all those corrupt Vinci officials getting nailed. I think that would have brought more closure. Instead Ani trusts all that key evidence to some random reporter?
So Jordan goes from being a Mobster's wife to Ani's nanny?
Farrell and Vaughn actually started really gelling together in their scenes. They were probably the 2 strongest leads.
We should now throw a pool of names of people they should approach for season 3. Hell, I say Brad Pitt and Kiefer Sutherland. Kiefer's a free agent now since he said he's done with 24.
This season also had too many fucking characters. For an 8 episode season, 2 good guys and 1 villain is a enough.
If Pizzolatto is writing season 3 solo again & playing showrunner again, I'll have to think twice about season 3. He really needs help. This season showed his lack of experience as a TV writer and showrunner.

So the finale was more of the same. In a way it was comforting because now I don't have to take anything I've said about this season back. Like others mentioned there was zero impact in the last half hour because it was just so difficult to care what came of the various plots or most if not all of the characters
Ray was an complex character and well acted, but mostly went to waste. I thought Frank and his wife had the most potential for an interesting story arc. But the rest was a zero.

So what was the point David Morse's character? Was any of that even needed?

That question can be asked of many things this season.
