^ Took me a second reading to parse it out while I was watching it last night. I think Kate focused on the "nurse" aspect of it instead of "servant" and got confused.

All the contestants got this one right, but I thought it was a bit misleading. The clue is asking about a "Roman numeral". I would consider a Roman numeral to be just one letter and when writing numbers you are using "Roman Numerals" and not a "Roman numeral" At least that is how it was defined when I was in school. The solution requires two Roman numerals instead of just one letter.

Just going by the date, I knew it was Title IX.

You're thinking of a digit not a numeral. A numeral represents a number, so "311", "nineteen", or in this case "IX" would all be numerals.

In grade school, we'd always have a math question phrased as "Write the number 33 using Roman Numerals" or "Write the number 10 as a Roman Numeral". They never said "Write the number 10 using Roman Numerals". To me that led to the assumption that a "Roman Numeral" is just a single symbol, whereas "Roman Numeral(s)" can be used to represent a number.

This is an example of a clue that seems so obvious that you want to second guess yourself because you wouldn't expect them to make it that easy. None of the contestants fell for it though.

I love it and I eagerly await the semi-quarter final best of 7 eliminator round robin to begin.

I am. i can't even keep track of what tournament they are even in anymore or if there's been more than one tournament at this point. They just seem to add an adjective before the word "tournament" now at the beginning of an episode. I don't even pay attention or care what tournament it is anymore.

since celebrity jeopardy has aired as a separate thing I had no idea who Ike was, but he won big tonight in the tournament of champions game

I have no idea what's going on. Is this whole season one big tournament? I could've sworn I saw someone win the tournament a few weeks ago and yet they continue?

I thought it was awesome that Ike won!
He came off smart in the celebrity editions, but wow, he was cleaning up on this show.
I usually do ok, but yesterday, I couldn't get most of them while he was answering them!
Got scared when center contestant went ahead at the end.
And I didn't even get final! I studied that poet too! :(

Yes, Tournament of Champions, for 5+ time winners from last season, as well as some others (Second Chance tournament, etc.)

It seems like it. It's been one Second Chance tournament round or Champions Wildcard tournaments after another. There have been no regular games this season so far.

The whole season has been tournaments. I'm ready for Jeopardy to go back to their usual format of bringing in two new players every day.

And how. This constant tournament stuff has become very tiresome.

Wait... there have been multiple Jeopardy! tournaments? Everything these past season... all of the wildcards and second chances and semifinals and quarterfinals have become one big blur. I can't keep track of what's going on.

My wife was impressed that I got the "Widdershins" question right today, though. rotfl

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Wasn't there something about having several tournaments filmed was a result of the writer's strike?

joltman 03-07-24 07:22 AM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I believe the original plan for the current season 40 was to debut the new standard post-season to start every season, which is to have Second Chance (people that didn't win but had really good games last season) and then the Champions Wildcard tournament (including everyone who won at least 1 game in the last season and wasn't automatically moved to the Tournament of Champions (ToC).

Due to the writers strike, they added Second Chance for season 37 (season 38 had a Second Chance last season) and Champions Wildcard for seasons 37 and 38 to start the season. And after the ToC, there's one more tournament, the Invitational Tournament, which will have old contestants returning for a chance to get into the Masters Tournament (airs on ABC assumable in May). Then we'll get back to regular games sometime next month (don't know exactly when as the ToC is a "first to win 3 games" format). So to summarize, this is the schedule for this season
  • Second Chance for season 37 (winners move to Champions Wildcard)
  • Champions Wildcard for seasons 37 and 38 (winners move to ToC)
  • Second Chance for season 39 (winners move to Champions Wildcard)
  • Champions Wildcard for season 39 (winners move to ToC)
  • Tournament of Champions (winner moves to Masters)
  • Invitational Tournament (winner moves to Masters)
  • Back to regular games

6 tournaments to "start" the season? WTH?

Josh-da-man 03-07-24 01:47 PM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Yeah, I get that the strike kind of ratfucked them, but all of this tournament stuff is overkill.
