What were we supposed to do with my Mom's stuff? We kept the few pieces we wanted, gave some things to charity, sold some items, and threw out things that had no value to anyone else. My sisters and I are fortunate that our parents downsized several times. Some heirs have to deal with a house, barn, garage, workshop, shed, and even back acres all packed with stuff that nobody wants.

I can understand that with some items, but others are much more personal. When my dad died 12 years ago, we went to the university to pick up about a dozen banker's boxes of his papers and things that had been stored for 16 years since he became too incapacitated to continue teaching and had to leave on disability. I spent weeks methodically going through his papers, shredding and shredding and shredding impersonal material like minutes of faculty meetings, endless lecture notes, and so forth. The articles I kept were so valuable to me, including uncountable letters, book translations of dad's, etc.
Around the same time, Dad's best friend, a colleague of his, sent me an audiotape made by a speech therapist who was helping my dad with his deteriorating speech. On the day the tape was made in 1998, my dad's best friend visited with him at the therapy session, and my dad addressed his friend with a tribute to their friendship; then these two longtime close friends, who shared a love of classical music, chocolate, highbrow humour, and more, chatted and laughed, with each other and the therapist. The bond was palpable and profound. I immediately digitized the audio. To me that sample of Dad's voice is worth much more than any amount of money. I haven't listened to it in a few years now, but just thinking about again makes me choke up.

Wow. Great game last night. The guy who came in second (by a dollar!) was the cousin of a close friend of mine, she was having an extended family Zoom watch party.

But I would have taken one answer away from him. The clue was "McDonald's introduced these in 1983", and he said "What are chicken nuggets?". I think it should have been "Chicken McNuggets", the trademark name. You might think, well, Chicken McNuggets are technically chicken nuggets, so it's correct. But what if the clue had been "This is the signature sandwich at McDonalds", and the person answered "What is a double cheeseburger?" Would you have accepted that, as after all, the Big Mac is indeed just a double cheeseburger?

Josh-da-man 04-28-22 02:19 PM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

^ They're both sort of correct.

The trademarked name is "Chicken McNuggets," but, as a general product, they're chicken nuggets. As far as I know, chicken nuggets were invented by McDonalds with the Chicken McNugget. They had been working on onion nuggets, which were to be a product similar to onion rings, which eventually became chicken nuggets. They introduced Chicken McNuggets to their restaurants, but also chicken nuggets to the greater world.

So either answer would, technically, be correct.

As for your example, "signature sandwich" is vague. Could be the simple hamburger or cheeseburgher (those are the "billions served" on their signs) or the Big Mac or the Quarter Pounder, unless the category was something more specific like 2 x 3, two words of three letters, or something to that effect.

Paff 04-28-22 03:00 PM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Yeah, I mean, "chicken nuggets" is technically correct, but I've seen Jeopardy be sticklers about that kind of thing before.

And ok, let me rephrase my analogy clue. How about "This sandwich is described as 'two all-beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese pickles onions on a sesame bun'"
Would you accept "What is a double cheeseburger?" which is also technically correct?

Red Dog 04-28-22 03:17 PM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I would have taken more issue with the 'Chicken' part of the answer.....at least for the original ones. ;)

I was listening, not watching, while making dinner. When I heard the FJ question, I knew Mattea was dead in the water. Was really surprised she pulled it out.

But then I rewound it and watched, and you can totally see that Sarah didn't know the answer.

Josh-da-man 05-06-22 03:47 AM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Mattea actually missed quite a few questions and spent most of her time trailing the other woman. I think she was bit quicker on the buzzer than Mattea, as she got a lot of questions M should have know.

And she got really lucky on that final question.

Paff 05-06-22 10:45 AM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I know she wouldn't be interested in me for very obvious reasons, but I think that Mattea is just cute as a button. And I like her in-game banter. This is a long-running champ that I tune in to watch her WIN, not to hope for her to finally get beaten.

Thanks to my local news for spoiling it for me by posting the 'news' on facebook just a couple hours after it aired. Ironically, it was when I got home from Doctor Strange, which I was successful in avoiding spoilers.

Yeah, I had it spoiled for me too, but I rarely watch Jeopardy on Fridays anyway (especially with Last Drive In back on) so in an annoying way I was glad they did so I could DVR it.

There was more than one good game this week. We were satisfied with the ending of her run.

How many shows are in a season? Between Matt Amodio, Amy, and Mattea, there don't seem to be a lot of episodes for other contestants for the Tournament of Champions.

There's 230 games in a season, minus the 10 Professor's Tournament games means 220 regular games. So Mattea (23 wins), Schneider (40 wins) and Amodio (20 wins this season) together won 83 games, accounting for about 38% of the wins this season. There have been a few other ToC contenders this season, Jonathan Fisher (the guy who beat Amodio, 11 wins), Tyler Rhode (the guy who beat Fisher, 5 wins), Andrew He (the guy who was beat by Schneider, 5 wins). 4-game winners are also now eligible for ToC, this season featured three 4-game winners in a row, Christine Whelchel, Margaret Shelton and Maureen O'Neil, as well as Jackie Kelly.

The really crazy thing about the next ToC is that it's going to include 3 of the top 5 contestants with the highest streaks, and if Jennings is hosting, that means all but Holzhauer will be involved!

Paff 05-11-22 11:09 AM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I'm surprised to see Amodio as the least of the three big winners this season, it seemed like he was on forever. I definitely wouldn't have thought he won fewer games than Roach.

Oh wait. You said this season. Didn't his streak start last season? What was his overall win total, spanning the two seasons?

By the way, every time Ken Jennings steps aside and Mayim Bialik comes back, there's articles about angry fans. Is that really a thing, or media trying to find a story where there isn't one? I think Bialik does just fine as host. Jennings does well too, I don't see anything that cements the decision one way or the other. Are people really just that mysogynistic that they get their panties in a bunch when a woman is hired to do a prominent job?

The Cow 05-11-22 01:05 PM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I feel like there is probably both, but pushed by media to become a story.

I think they both do fine as well, but I prefer Ken's personality a bit. He seems more personable/real and she's a bit more by-the-book wooden. Nothing wrong with that, just my personal take, I'm fine with either.

feenst 05-11-22 03:31 PM

I think both are fine. And I would be fine if both continued to host.

I'm always disappointed when Mayim comes back. She's not terrible, and has certainly improved, but I much prefer Ken.

Josh-da-man 05-11-22 06:24 PM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I like both, but I prefer Ken.

He's really nailed the gameshow host thing down, and just feels like he belongs there. He's got that Trebek thing where he's affable and likeable with the intellectual edge needed for Jeopardy.

While I like Bialik, she comes off a bit more affected and actor-y.

As such, I think Ken is probably better suited for the Daytime Jeopardy, and Bialik well-equipped for the Primetime specials.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

This new guy seems to have a weird Final Jeopardy betting strategy. He's ahead of the other contestant, but no where near enough to be a runaway game. His wager would not have been enough to win if next highest contestant bet it all and got it correct. He's basically gambling that the other contestant would get it wrong, otherwise he wouldn't be able to win. I think he even did that in at least on eof the other two games he's played.

They've been doing this for the past year. Mayim is an official host, while Ken is still considered a guest host. I feel like most people prefer him over her and ratings will drop if they have her as the only host of Jeopardy.

Might be digging for things that aren’t there on this one.
Broadcasts show maybe 1% of these “first pitches”.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Yeah, as a trans person who watches baseball, I can't recall the last time I saw a ceremonial first pitch televised as part of the broadcast. Unless there's more to this, I would probably say this is a non-issue being blown out of proportion.

movieguru 06-14-22 10:16 AM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I don't watch much sports on tv, but I don't recall many televised sports showing the first pitch, national anthem, etc. unless it is a major event like the Super Bowl. Fox, like other networks are in business to make money. I'm sure they will make more revenue by showing a commercial during the time that someone is doing the first pitch rather than showing the pitch and virtually no one is going to tune out of watching the game just because they couldn't see the first pitch being televised.

Decker 06-14-22 11:25 AM

Yeah I never watch baseball pregame coverage, so I don’t know what is or isn’t usually shown.

Definitely people reaching for some outrage on this one. When was the last time that you actually saw the ceremonial first pitch, at a regular baseball game, televised?

Josh-da-man 06-15-22 04:12 PM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I didn't even know that they did ceremonial first pitches at every game. I thought it was just at the first game of the season, or maybe special occasions, like if they're promoting a charity.

jjcool 06-16-22 04:19 PM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I dont think they do them at many games in the MLB. Usually only for special occasions, and it is extremely rare that they are broadcast.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

It looks like the contestant in the middle got cheated out of the win on the 6/17 episode during Final Jeopardy. You can see she wrote all the letters for "Tubman" but Mayim says "It looks like you were going for "Tubman, but you didn't finish". I can see all five letters there and they've let given many other contestants credit before even though their handwriting was much lee legible than this contestant's writing.

They also gave the current champ credit for a clue during Double Jeopardy when she said "Lou Gerick" instead of "Lou Gehrig".

There are six letters in Tubman :)

And if I didn’t know what it was supposed to say, and just had the scribble to go on, it looks like Tulmy to me.

I've seen them accept other answers that were similarly sloppy, like this one:
