I knew it was Magellan.

Had to kind of think it through, though. The only penguin I could think of was the Emperor Penguin, but knew that wasn't it. Then I started thinking of explorers from that time period, and remembered that Magellan sailed between South America and Antarctica (Strait of Magellan) when the circumnavigated the globe.

I'm sure that's what Matt was thinking, then he overthought it, and remembered the Drake Passage.

I would have answered Turd Ferguson.

I hate when the answer is so obvious, after you hear it. Like last week, I had no idea what language the Declaration of Independence was first published in in a Pennsylvania newspaper, and guessed French like Matt did. Only after they pointed out the "Germantown" part of Philadelphia did it suddenly make sense. Actually, one of the contestants was on the right track, answering Dutch.

I did feel a little smug when no one knew (on a $2K question) who played keyboards on "You Make Lovin' Fun" in 1977. Pretty easy if you're even aware of the existence of Fleetwood Mac.

He bet chump change on the two Daily Doubles in the 2nd round. But looks like he would of lost a lot more if he had bet the boat on those Daily Doubles.
I'm having a hell of time understanding the answers/pronunciations coming out of Matt's mouth. Maybe it's just my hearing.

He doesn't always pronounce words correctly. He clearly has read up on a lot of subjects, but didn't look up the pronunciations of what he was reading. Hence him not knowing how to say "katydid" recently. Sort of reminded me of Ted Mosby on How I Met Your Mother telling his class about a person changed who colors like a "shamma-LEE-on"

It's always kind of strange when all three players can't answer what seems to be a fairly easy question.

Here's a quick Q&A article with Matt--mostly about his background but he also addresses his "what's" style of answering.

Richards was named the permanent new host. So he just hires himself since he’s the EP as well.

Eh, it probably gave the show some good ratings, and it also shows that he is very qualified for the job compared to the others that have hosted.

I thought Mike, bow-tie guy, and possibly Mayim were the best up until this week, but Joe Buck (surprisingly to me) has really been good right from his start. But then again, with his other career, he would likely not be an option.

See, I never saw all the guest hosts as being serious "tryouts". I mean, Aaron Rodgers isn't quitting football (not yet, at least) after an MVP season to host Jeopardy, Anderson Cooper is not leaving CNN.

Spoiler:
Internal message SPT:
"As I am sure you have noticed, our host selection process has received tremendous public attention and scrutiny recently, particularly about Mike’s role in the decision-making. When we began our search, Mike, as EP of Jeopardy!, was involved in those early conversations. But when we began to consider him as a potential host, he was not part of that process."

Okay, so he didn't actually "hire himself" but the studio and his bosses were the ones who made the decision.

I like Mike and it was Sony's decision to hire him. He's 46 so if the ratings are good he can host for a very long time. I think it was important to find someone that can host for the next 15-20 years.

I didn't see them all as auditions either, but this hiring just feels really off to me. Happy to see Bialik will stay a part of things. I still think she was the best of the guest hosts. There's something about Richards that feels too much like a game show host to me.

But...it's a game show. Isn't it?

Maybe not flashy and gimmicky as something like The Price is Right, but it's still contestants trying to win money. If the series of guest hosts WAS a series of auditions though, I'm wondering if Matt's run has kinda hamstrung some of the last few hosts. They've had to keep a boring one-person streak interesting.

Wait. Are you serious? This is a job for a game show host? Well, that changes everything!

I'd very closely equate a game show host and a used car salesman. It's that same shit eating grin, that persistent fakeness and insincerity. Trebek didn't feel like a game show host to me. Richards does.

It does feel kind of lame that the show did all those guest hosts only to end up hiring the executive producer. I guess it’s whatever as I’m not a frequent viewer, but seems kind of gimmicky in my opinion. I realize he didn’t hire himself, but I’m sure he had a fairly big advantage.

Richards was one of the better guest hosts.

He, Bialik, and Buzzy were my top three.

And Joe Buck is doing pretty good, too.

I missed Monday's ep, but just watched the Tuesday episode.

Buck was very good.

Outside of his ridiculous reaction to the Randy Moss fake-mooning, I've always liked Buck on football (better than his partner ;) ). He's very good on baseball.

The Champ is rolling. Gotta keep recording these.

I think a lot of people (myself included) like him and were hoping he would have been better. Unfortunately I think he missed the mark during his time hosting. He seemed like he would have been a good fit, but I guess not.

Seems like all the effort with the guest hosts was all just for show when they really knew who they had in mind all the time. I don't particuarly care for him. He comes off a little too polished and fake like some kind of unethical corporate exec that works for CVS or some other trash company. I would have preferred Jennings. He was more likable and seemed like he would be more aceepted as a replacement for Alex by the audience.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I don't think Richards had even planned to guest host since he was the EP. He only filled in for two weeks, because they had trouble finding guest hosts due to the Pandemic. He went from emergency fill-in to full-time host.

This article is from February: Jeopardy! welcomed its second guest host since Alex Trebek‘s death, as executive producer Mike Richards stepped into the spotlight February 22, hot on the heels of G.O.A.T. champion Ken Jennings‘ successful run.

At the start of the show, Richards explained just what he was doing there. The experienced host and multiple Emmy-winning producer explained that due to COVID some potential guest hosts were “understandably a little reticent to shoot. So, as the producer, my job is to quite literally live the mantra ‘the show must go on.'” https://www.tvinsider.com/988802/jeo...ds-do-as-host/

I don't think the guest host period was ever intended to be much of an audition. It was never presented as such by Jeopardy and the vast majority of guest hosts had existing gigs they weren't leaving. Outside of the ex-Jeopardy players, Burton, and maybe Bialik, who would have left their current gig to become a full time host? I think people are projecting the "audition" aspect on to it. Sure, it doesn't hurt to be able to see someone actually perform the job, but I suspect there was a lot more thought put into choosing a host than what someone did over 5-10 games (which is really what 1-2 days of taping?).

The guest hosts were something of a gimmick, bought time to select someone more permanent, and basically gave a bunch of people a chance to honor Alex and the game while giving money to charity. That's the main purpose.

From what I recall, they were advertising it as a try out for a possible host for the show. They had said that some were just brought in to honor the show and Alex, like Katie Couric and Dr. Oz. But others were considered potentials for permanent host.

I was hoping for David Faber, which is funny considering I'd never even heard of him before he guest hosted. He felt the most like a proper successor to Alex's style.

Too bad the girl didn't win yesterday. She was a cutie.

Was a little annoyed that Buck did a Rodney Dangerfield impression while reading the Caddyshack clue, but Matt still got it wrong anyway so I guess it wasn't a factor.

The contestant on there right now is quite good. He plays a lot more conservatively than Jeff Holthouz so he may not beat his monetary record, but he's got a good chance in beating his number of wins. If he is still in the game after tonight he will be half way there. He's got a long way to go to beat Jenning's total number of wins or regular game dollar total, but he will most likely end up with at least third place for both the records.

I never watched this Jeff person play so I have no frame of reference. Matt definitely has been a little more conservative on the last two FJs, after Clavining away $30k on Monday.

He seems to be a little gun shy now. Still under bidding on the Double Jeopardy's when he has a huge lead. Also he needs to stick to his first answer in final Jeopardy.
