Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I had no problem with Jennings. I thought he did fine. As others have said, no one is going to be Trebek. It's going to take a while to get used to hearing anyone else in this gig. In that way, it was probably a good call to go with a rotation of guest hosts for a while. I wasn't a big fan when I first heard that, but it surprised me just how off it felt not hearing that "here's your host ... Alex Trebek!" intro and his voice.

Yeah, Jennings has been okay.

It usually takes hosts a while to find their groove. They're not going to be fully formed out of the gate. Even someone like Colbert, who had his own half-hour talk show for years, took a while to adjust to The Late Show and find his voice and persona.

“Jeopardy!” has announced even more upcoming guest hosts to take over the podium for the late Alex Trebek, including Anderson Cooper, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Savannah Guthrie and Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
Dr. Oz :yack:

This is in addition to the previously announced guest hosts Jeopardy executive producer Mike Richards, Katie Couric, Aaron Rodgers and Mayim Bialik

Well my parents will have to find something else to watch for a couple weeks, they hate all those people.

Odd guest hosts.

My cousin appeared on the Dr. Oz show once, so she might watch his episodes.

I watch infrequently, but my parents were sold on Jennings after just a couple episodes. I've seen him a few times now and I'd be fine with him taking the reins.

Same here, Ken seemed odd (understandably) and wooden at first, but after the first week we have warmed up to him. I'd still keep watching if he ends up wanting/getting the job.

Ken Jennings is doing surprisingly well. I did not expect that at all.

I'm catching up and have just watched the first few episodes with Jennings as host. He does well with the fast rhythm of the show, but I think his voice is just not right for being a game show host--it's too weak and raspy. You need someone with a fairly strong, clear, resonant voice that carries well.

I have a colleague who works on Jeopardy. Jennings shot 30 episodes. Every other guest host is filming 10 episodes each. They film 5 episodes per day and are currently shooting April's episodes.

^Thanks for that info. And I was hoping that would be the case (i.e. that the other guest hosts wouldn't be on as long as Ken).

Same thing I was thinking.
He very good and very likable but his voice doesn’t have the weight, the gravitas that one needs.

Jennings’ first ep was 76 I think so he should go until 105? Is my math correct?

Correct, and from what I understand, executive producer Mike Richards will host 2 weeks after Ken, meaning episodes 106-115

 I think I mentioned Jennings voice as the only drawback way back when we were discussing possible replacements before Alex passed.

It's different at first, but I'm fine with it.

I think they mentioned him along with another champion who were going to come back for the tournament of champions.

I agree with this, but I'm not a fan of any of the other hosts that they've lined up either, and I feel like they've lined them up specifically so that we would ask for Jennings back.

You don't need a "smart" person to host Jeopardy. Alex didn't know all the answers, he was a professional host with a good speaking voice and a likable personality.

That's literally all you need. You don't need someone who the audience knows. The audience will accept anyone who is a good presenter and can make that personal connection.

I personally didn't think Ken would be good at all. I have been pleasantly surprised. He is nowhere near Alex, obviously, but he also hasn't had the decades of experience that Alex has had. Right now, I wouldn't be against Ken taking over permanently, but I am curious to see what the other guest hosts can do. I don't hate any of the ones that have been announced so far, but I am most looking forward to seeing what Anderson and Aaron do with the gig.

Most local TV stations in big markets have reporters who do nothing but human interest stories, You know, local historical landmark anniversaries, the girl who receives 10,000 birthday cards, or the 90 year old man showing off his Lionel train collection. These people are have very pleasant and personable demeanors, and can talk to all kinds of folks, Somewhere out there in this pool of talent is the perfect Jeopardy host.
