MacFarlane always jokes about disowning the show, but it really is his best alongside Orville.

The TV by the Numbers ratings site is shutting down. Seems like it’s an issue with a new owner.

That's a shame. While it has become less relevant in the age of streaming, and as far as network and cable programming the 'formula' for what can get renewed and what may be canceled seems to have gotten a lot more complicated, I still found it useful for a broad look at where some shows stand in terms of likelihood of renewal.

The site quickly became irrelevant when streaming and delayed viewing killed live ratings and shows were still getting renewed with mediocre to low ratings. I used to go there daily, but traffic on that site has dramatically declined in recent years.

Honestly I don't see anyone who really pays attention or cares about Nielsen ratings anymore. I watched the shows that interest me and if they stay on, great. If not, there's 10 others to watch.

I never cared about ratings. It didn't affect whether I'd enjoy a show or not. It also didn't affect whether or not I would pick up a show I hadn't seen.

The only thing the ratings did was help me figure out whether the show had a snowballs chance of being renewed or if it would be canceled due to low viewers. Now that is no longer the case and thus the ratings lost absolutely any kind of relevance they might've had for me.

TVSeriesFinale.com and Spoilertv.com are still around for those that care about these things.

Sucks we lost tvbythenumbers and most of boxofficemojo so close to each other.

Re: The One and Only TV FAQ Thread Plus Renewal and Cancellation News

Ratings only matter if you are an advertiser buying commercial time on tv networks.

For renewal decisions, it is completely opaque after the first season or two in regard to prime time network tv shows (ie. nbc, cbs, abc, etc ...). Ratings don't tell you much, other than the lowest rated rookie show(s) getting the boot.

Only the insiders making the renewal/cancel decisions will know for sure whether ratings are bringing in enough ad revenue, compared to other sources of revenue (ie. streaming services, etc ...).

Yeah it doesn't make a lot of sense to pay much attention to the ratings unless you are wondering if there is some groundswell for a show you may be unaware of. Networks are going to do what they do and there isn't much of anything you can do about it no matter how much you sweat over it..

If you still want to waste your time with ratings, there's always

Showbuzz Daily

As far as I know, this is one of the few websites which publishes semi-public ratings data in great detail. A lot more detailed than the cancelbear folks on tvbythenumbers.

As a current example of ratings weirdness, take a look at last night's ratings on showbuzzdaily.

The Sked: Friday Network Scorecard 2.7.2020 | Showbuzz Daily

The scripted shows like MacGyver, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods, etc .... got consistently lower ratings than the ABC News Democratic Candidates Debate last night.

I've heard one or two big advertisers on their own can literally keep a network show afloat. Traditional ratings matter very little for certain types of content these days.

There are two documented cases in recent times, where this was indeed the case and very visible: Subway.

- Chuck
- Community

For other shows, it isn't as visible. For example, who has been the big advertisers keeping shows like Law & Order SVU, NCIS, NCIS LA, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods on the air for 10 seasons or longer?

I don't know... Subway was pretty visible on Hawaii Five-0:

Case in point: the CW network.

Over the past 5+ years or so, the CW seems to just run everything to its conclusion, completely independent of any ratings success or failures.

For example, keeping the Dynasty reboot around in spite of consistently having 0.0 or almost 0.0 ratings.

Ratings absolutely don't matter for the CW. They make their money back in streaming deals and cutting show budgets to the bone. That's why all of their superhero shows look worse than ever and any unessential, expensive actors get cut.

For Warner, airing their superhero programs on the CW is little more than a loss leader to build brand awareness.

For once, I decided to watch for the commercials last night. On cbs it was mostly reruns such as NCIS and FBI.

OK. I can see why shows like NCIS end up being on the air for 10+ years or longer. Excluding ads which were local specific, most of the commercials were for banks, insurance, drugs, AARP, etc .... I don't know if AARP has a huge budget for ads, though I can see financial institutions, insurance companies, phrama corporations, etc .... having decent budgets for advertising on prime time tv.

CBS consistently draws higher total ratings than the other networks, but many advertisers don't like the viewing demographics of those shows (ie people over the age of 54). If you are 60 years old, you might as well be dead to most potential advertisers.

One sixteen-year-old viewer to an advertiser is worth ten 60-year-olds.

In the case of banks, insurance, drugs, etc .... advertisements, I doubt it would even get the attention of a young person.

The only exception perhaps might be ads trying to sell marijuna or vaping type stuff.

Almost Family that Britney Snow FOX series will air a two hour finale this Sat Feb 22 after being off for several weeks.

Safe to assume it won't be coming back for season 2.

Drugs, sure. But the 18 - 49 is the target demo for most programs, 16 isn't considered target since they're generally still living off their parents. The goal is to create a lifetime customer, so banks and insurance are definitely interested, especially in their late 20s onward.
