Black Doves (Netflix) - I really enjoyed this spy thriller series starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw. The characters are well-drawn and the spy stuff is somewhat believable. Both Knightley and Whishaw are excellent and compelling in their roles, and the supporting cast is very good, too.

Re: Last Show You Binged?

Ted Lasso: The Richmond Way - Just finished binging all three seasons, and I'm just amazed and in awe of how great this show is, and how it lived up to the incredible hype that it has attained. I really wasn't sure at first, when it was announced on Blu-Ray (I don't have Apple TV, and the Blu-Ray Set originally had a Canadian Retail Price of $129.99; I was like, no way, not at that price. Then it dropped to $99.99 and I still held off; finally, shortly before Christmas, it dropped to like $60, so I took the dive), but anyone else who is hesitant, you really don't have to be. It is joyous, hilariously funny, heart-warming at times, and just plain damn likeable. Like the character Ted, the show is just impossible to dislike. I found myself in stitches constantly, and even when the show is trying to share some message or moral, it never feels like it's shoving it down your throat. Every positive message the show wishes to express always somehow feels organic and simply part of the show. And much of this has to do with the dialogue, and the crazy but completely reasonable analogies that the characters make. Ted's positivism is infective. And when everyone was saying this for years I would just roll my eyes and be like, "Yeah, right, it can't be that good." But it is. And it's different from the more cynical comedies that usually dominate and that I usually prefer (think Seinfeld, Eastbound & Down, and Veep). The show can, on occasion, appear cynical momentarily but than it always manages to shift away from any sense of negativism. It's really amazing. I went through 5 episodes night one, 5 episodes night two, 9 episodes night three, 3 the next afternoon, then I finished the complete third season over a single day starting early in the morning and just being glued to the couch (it's hard to stop watching these once you start; oh, and Season One is 10 episodes, and Seasons Two and Three are 12 each, I believe). And the show remains topical, dealing with all sorts of issues like racism and homophobia and sexism. It also tends to incorporate really life-events and it carefully distinguishes them even so that they don't just veer into mock-doc territory, but they alter them to suit the needs of the story. Stuff like, they obviously have a character partially based on Rupert Murdoch. And they have storyline involving the phone hacking scandal that notoriously occurred in the UK several years ago.

Breakthrough character was probably the one played by Brett Goldstein, who I believe also had a role as a key writer on the show. And I've always liked Juno Temple, and she's fantastic in this. I can't even remember a lot of the other actors because they were unfamiliar to me, but nearly every member of the cast is perfect for the role they are in (one exception is Sam Richardson, I think that's his name, he was in Veep and Office Christmas Party; I didn't like his take on this character, whether that was partly the writing or not I didn't think he tackled it properly).

My one and only quibble would be with the final 3 episodes. Episode Ten of Season Three felt weirdly out of place, and did not really fit the tone of the series. Perhaps it was a bit too on the nose, and maybe a bit too melodramatic, but I didn't think it worked as much. And the direction is oddly lacking, making it stand-out. And the final two episodes do become a little too dramatic at times, but I understand that when a series is coming to an end (supposedly, every now and then there's a new rumor but I guess we'll see), there's a tendency to go that route. And the very, very end of the last episode is pretty perfect. Will leave you a bit sad cause there's no more episodes to watch the characters continue to grow, but also happy because it just puts a smile on your face. And even if we don't ever get another season, and don't get a chance to revisit these characters, maybe three near perfect seasons is enough. Some would say that they struck lightning in a bottle when they made this show, but that would be underselling the contributions from every involved in the production.

Marvelous entertainment. Really wish the Blu-Ray contained some extras. Would've loved to hear commentaries or at least a small doc interviewing the main cast and crew. But, on the other hand, I just picked up a recently released book called Believe: The Untold Story Behind TED LASSO the Show That Kicked Its Way Into Our Hearts by Jeremy Egner, which is an oral history of the series. And I'm going to start delving into it tomorrow, cause I bought it after watching Season One, but knew I had to watch the full series before I started diving into it.

Squid Game - Season 2 (Netflix)

There seems to be a lot of hate on the Interwebs for S2, but I really enjoyed it. It was about as good as I could have hoped. Bring on Season 3!

I enjoyed it too. But don't try to watch it at the same time you're watching The Agency (on Showtime/Paramount +) . You can get really confused between them.

I am not an Andy Samberg fan. Watching him act is like nails on a chalkboard for me… but thanks for the recommendation.

I went with Community.

Original CSI. It's been fun to revisit the show now that I've been to Vegas about a million times since it's aired.

Futurama - Season 12 on Hulu

This is perhaps a very underrated show as some of the episodes are just wonderful in how clever they are.

So glad that Hulu saved this series. Will be watching episode nine in a few minutes.

The Day of the Jackal - this is streaming on Peacock in the US. Eddie Redmayne plays an assassin-for-hire in this modern adaptation of the classic novel. I thought it was pretty good. There were some things that bugged me, like he took actions at times that seemed sloppy and reckless and were obviously going to blow back on him. Not what you would expect from a professional hitman as they are usually portrayed. But that aside, I enjoyed this and I see that it has been renewed for a second season and I will be watching.
