Red hasn't been implicated in the fire, and he's not her father.

maybe not but if he's not the core relationship makes little sense

He lied about killing her dad he said he put him out of his misery. He clearly killed him to keep him quite about something.

He admits that he stopped her adoptive dad Sam from telling her something in this episode. However, it's not a lie that Red killed him to put him out of his misery. Back in the episode that Red killed Sam, Sam calls Liz first to say goodbye, then after hanging up, gives Red a nod. So Sam was at least complicit in his own death, which makes it near euthanasia. If Sam had really wanted to tell Liz something, he could've done so on that last phone call.

I love the show but they are playing the slope a bit too slippery in that regard.
