Sucks since he was the only guy doing a show on Fridays but I assumed he must have complained to NBC maybe in the past why he does a show and Colbert and Kimmel are off on Fridays.

He has a special where he plays golf with DJ Khaled next Friday.

Too bad NBC does not have a sit down interview show at 1:30am when Costas was around and then followed by Greg Kinnear in the early 90's.

.

Fallon was taping two shows on Thursday and still taking a three day weekend every week, just like Letterman used to do. The cutback is part of an overall strategy to lower the production costs of Fallon's and Meyers' shows.

Friday are probably be a bad night for shows like these unless the target demographic skews older.

Same reason they show copaganda stuff like SWAT and Blue Bloods on Friday nights when your grandparents are the only people at home watching tv.

I was kinda wondering about someone who's been a member for 24 years making that "you grandpa's TV" comment. :p

It does not help aspiring musicians and comedians who want national exposure and recognition and maybe their big break with only 4 days of late night talk shows.

I know it is not like Carson back in the day but you do get some cred if you are seen on the late night shows and you are new and looking to get into showbiz.

The networks ran the talk show format into the ground. I doubt they will be around in any recognizable form within 5-7 years.

People still watch them and clips online with tons of views on Youtube

We are definitely approaching a turning point. Kimmel wants to retire. Colbert is 60 years old. How will ABC and CBS deal with the format when they decide to go?

Fallon is 50, and has been hosting for 15 years. How long will he hang around? I doubt NBC would ever kick him out.

Yeah I don't watch the shows when they are on (zzzz) but the musical guests and other clips that interest me I watch on YouTube.

But the networks use those shows to promote other network programming and doubt they would want to drop something and I don't think Hollywood would like it if there is one less area to promote their movies.

Fallon says he loves the job and his passion and he has game shows on NBC so I assume he is not retiring anytime soon.

So what's the reasoning behind having new shows on Sundays?
Is this something new that started this season?

SNF has been around for a long time now.
Seems like something that could have been begun years ago?

Probably to prop up the show.

Except NBC has to get Fallon to produce a show on Sunday, when he had already been making shows five nights a week, Monday through Friday. So, part of it is a sign of how much the nightly viewership of the show has diminished that NBC can make this kind of "special" demand now.

Also, SNF always runs past prime-time in the East and Central time Zones, so IDK how much appetite there is for a late night show on Sunday night, but in CA, these Fallon specials run in prime time, right?

10pm in the Bay Area

He did some Sun shows in the past too when he worked Mon-Fri schedule but now he just does Mon-Thurs though he wants to work all 5 days but NBC would not allow it.

For a couple of weeks he had a NBA player every Tues probably since NBC has NBA games on Tuesdays.

That's what I was going to say, I thought he already works only 4 days anyway.

It's an interesting situation. Fallon has a contract so he gets paid the same whether they do 4 or 5 regular Tonight Shows a week. And I expect most of his staff is salaried as well. So, it's just NBC saying that despite what they are already paying everybody, it's just not worth it for them to spend the production costs on a fifth show every week. That kind of sends everyone a clear signal of what the show is worth. So when NBC says they want one on Sunday, Fallon knows to ask how high to jump.

On the other hand. Johnny Carson was so powerful that he was making 3 shows a week and taking weeks and weeks of vacation, and NBC just threw money at him.

Likely still works 4 "days."

I watched the show last night and I could tell the jokes were timely enough to be referencing this week, but not referencing anything from the weekend. I suspect he records it Thursday back-to-back with a regular show.
