Dave was willing to humiliate Paris Hilton because he did not give a shit about her, but he would not cross Julia Roberts asking about her personal life when it was breaking news. Fallon needs the trust of the industry to keep his show going more than he needs an interesting interview with Cruise. He and Cruise both got what they needed from the lip sync battle: controversy-free publicity.

Pretty much. I remember when The Rock was doing WM or something and had a movie coming out. He had a late night show appearance and rumor is, he could not be asked wrestling questions because the team that booked his appearance was on the movie team and wanted it just to be focused on that.

I don't think anybody cares but Adam Sandler told the same story about his kid diving into a pool on Fallon and Seth Meyers and Russell Crowe a couple of months ago had the same story or personal anecdote on 2 different talk shows.

No, but a good interview will know how to bring it out and keep it entertaining at the same time. Letterman's first question for both Paris Hilton and Martha Stewart were how's the slammer. He doesn't give a shit.

Good point, it's not like notecards were ever a prominent part of Letterman's show.

I think that LateNight Talk shows have changed since Carson retired and it combination of things why they are not as good as they were.

-As many people said that Hollywood stars want a more controlled interview as they just want to play it safe, promote their product, and get out of there. An example of why it was better from the Carson era: He had on Chevy Chase to promote Three Amigos, and then had on Siskel & Ebert (while Chevy Chase is sitting on the couch) start ripping the movie, and some of his other choices. Chase was actually a good sport about it, as it turned out to be a funny show. You would NEVER see that happen today. Plus alot of Carson's guests would just show up and really wouldn't promote anything just cause they were good friends with him (Rickles, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Joan Rivers, etc.)

-Most of the hosts like Fallon, Meyers, Kimmel, Conan aren't very versatile comedians so the show suffers with their flaws. Fallon is a terrible interviewer as they are next to unwatchable. Conan does great bits (he was a writer for SNL) but can't do a monologue because he was never a standup comedian. Carson could do all of them as his monologue was always good, he could do impressions so his bits were great, and his interviews were just as good cause he didn't fawn over the guests.

-Letterman (in his early days at NBC) was probably the best alternative to Carson as his show was unique because of his brand of humor. Letterman is the only Latenight Comedians to really give us something different then Carson did, yet still keeping in the tradition of what works. Todays hosts are just bland comedians who don't really offer anything new and different (rely on people watching the show mostly by booking an 'A' level guest, and that is why late night is a shell of what it used to be.

I have a relative who's a publicist and does a lot of work coordinating talk show appearances.

Even jaded and well-informed viewers would be shocked at the planning and negotiation that goes on for the talk show appearances of superstars.

It was never the same for me once I found out that the host met with the guest in the green room before and actually went through what they would talk about specifically almost like a wrestling match in WWE where everything was choregraphed. Then you see the guest come out when they are introduced and they look at the host like this is the first time they have met them and give them a big hug.

And then I'm sure they have the 'applause' signs on the set for the fans too....

He was the only who would just 'shoot the shit' with his guest as they were the only interviews that were interesting because you never knew where it was going. I do wonder how many guests would not do Ferguson because of this?

Carson: Always made his guests look far better than they brought. Part of his genius was in making it appear as though the guests delivered punch lines.
Letterman: Brought a little edge and unpredictability, might even get a little combative when called for. The first to break the standard mold.
Furgeson: Could make anything funny, meanderingly unpredictable, a free-form shoot the shit master class.
Fallon: A fully puckered, ass-kissing giggling fan-boy...would rather watch teenage girls interview One Direction. The interview portion of the show is an utter waste of time.

Any idea how to get into that type of field of work?

Get an expensive college degree in public relations and communications, then work the rest of your 20s in internships and low-paying jobs running errands, wait for the right person to see that you are hard-working and smart, and hope that your efforts are rewarded with an actual career opportunity. (It helps to have parents that are willing to pretty much support you for your first decade of adulthood.)

Tom Cruise Bans Scientology, Dating Questions for Interviewers on ‘Mission: Impossible’ Media Blitz -

Insider tells TheWrap that religion and romantic involvement are strictly off the table if outlets want access to movie star

Tom Cruise’s publicity team has forbidden news outlets from asking questions about his personal life and Scientology during his worldwide promotional tour for “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” an individual with knowledge of the tour told TheWrap.

Cruise’s camp enforced a strict “no personal questions” caveat for access to the star, the individual said.

The ban included any mention of HBO’s explosive Scientology documentary “Going Clear,” as well as tabloid reports that Cruise was dating his assistant.

Cruise’s whirlwind media blitz has included photos calls and red-carpet premieres in Vienna and New York City, as well as a guest appearance on Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show” and a crowd-pleasing lip-syncing turn on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.”

Stewart specifically raised eyebrows with industry insiders for failing to broach the weightier topics in favor of discussing workout routines and Cruise retaining all of his hair at age 53.

“That was definitely not the case for his interview on The Daily Show,” a Comedy Central spokesperson said. “No one put any restrictions on questions Jon could ask him.”

^Who cares? I don't give a shit about who he's dating or his religion (ALL religions believe in kooky things).

I don't see why stuff like this makes news. He probably gets sick and tired of hearing questions about his personal life all the time and I don't blame him for telling interviewers to not waste his and their time asking questions that have nothing to do with the movie he is promoting. The guys is followed by paparazzi night and day.

Yeah, he has a great life and makes a shit ton of money, but he has to give up stuff for that as well. It's gotta suck a lot of the time.

Fallon is the only late night host who does 5 new shows every week.

Seth Meyers, Kimmel, Corden, Conan, Larry Wilmore, and Stewart all take Fri or early Sat Morning off.

Re: The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon Discussion Thread

The Tonight Show host is sticking around on NBC for another six years, the network announced at the Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour on Thursday. Fallon’s contract renewal extends his gig until fall 2021.

“Jimmy Fallon is simply the best that there is, the most versatile star of a show anywhere in television in my opinion,” said NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt. “The Tonight Show has always been an institution, but he’s remade it into a destination for the largest audience anywhere in late night. He’s the face of NBC in a lot of ways and we’re thrilled he’s going to be hosting The Tonight Show for many years to come.”

Since taking over The Tonight Show in Feb. 2014, the late-night host averaged 3.8 million viewers overall in the 2014-2015 season, dominating the time period over ABC and CBS competition with a 79 percent margin of victory in adults 18-49, according to NBC.

Speaking of Carson, Antenna TV will start airing Tonight Show w/Johnny Carson full episodes in Jan 2016.

That was fun to see them back together. I had always found it odd that Kel had never made a cameo on Saturday Night Live or something until I had read that Kenan didn't want anything to do with Kel. It'd be cool if this led to them doing more things together as they were a great duo.

Not really sure. The vibe I got from what Kel said was that Kenan thought he was above him or something and didn't want to be associated with the stuff they did on Nickelodeon. That isn't what he said exactly but it seemed implied a bit.

Kel talks about it a bit here:

Wow, full episodes. With a rebroadcast at 2am that's a big chunk of time for AntennaTV. It's been interesting to see some of the old interviews that occasionally run on Turner Classic Movies. Definitely be checking this out. Hopefully it's a lot of rare stuff.

Be nice if someone would reair the NBC Letterman shows or stick all of them up online. Probably in 20 years.

In that time the pair made 65 episodes and a made-for-TV film but since then Kenan and Kel have gone their separate ways.
Wasn't Goodburger a theatrical release?
