Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
As a long time fan of this series I'm so glad to see how big it has gotten. Every episode has some pretty big and interesting deals. It's crazy how different the pitches are from season 1.
|
Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
I don't think the Guitar Hero guys really needed the Sharks and they knew it. They would almost certainly get better money from the VC world with their background. That felt like they were willing to do a small sliver of equity for more exposure.
Cuban often just jumps on certain products he dislikes. Going off the edit, the weight vest pitch got unnecessary criticism. He was basically looking for financing, he already had a proven product and market. It's pretty apparent by now that each Shark only feels comfortable dealing with a handful of industries, so a pitch is out of luck if their service/product is not in one of their fields. |
Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
OMG, I couldn't believe how the Sing Mix guys just tanked that with 4 offers. Daymond's offer was probably the best one. Some of these guys are pretty stingy with their equity and not looking at the value of having a partner like Daymond.

Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
Robert telling the belt lady "You can't blame the economy" for not making money is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard coming out of his mouth. I'm with Damon on that one...even though she wasn't the "go getter" the sharks want to deal with, the fact that she still made roughly the same amount in the years the economy was in the tank is pretty impressive, considering a lot of the stores she was selling to closed shop.

I'm wondering how much the Guitar Hero guys made off their deal with Activision. Their product was pretty cool for the price but I was really having a hard time figuring out why they wanted a shark. They either had a really bad experience in the past or they just wanted the exposure and had no intention of coming to a deal. I'm thinking the latter.

Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
Poor Damon
edit- oops it's Daymond. Sorry bro! |
Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
Is it possible for Shark Tank to jump the shark? Just not feeling this show lately; most of the products seem super lame. And the negotiations are dull and predictable.

Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
I was surprised the grip lady took Robert of Damond. Sure, his deal was better, but kind of shit is in Damond's wheel house.
I liked the bottle breachers. I might order a couple as gifts. |
Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
That was a stunningly shortsighted decision by that woman to pick Robert over Daymond.
The bottle breachers were a cool novelty item, though I can't imagine it ever becoming a widely acceptable gift. I imagine the market for them is largely confined to the South. |
Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
Squatty potty! Stern talks about that fucking thing all the time. No surprise that Lori did a deal with them. That is QVC material all the way. Haha
|
Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
The fiscal numbers shocked me, since I don't listen to Stern anymore. I still don't understand why the popcorn people got so many lucrative offers. That was a strangely cut segment, I am sure a major part of the discussion got clipped.
|
Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
The Squatty Potty guy was kind of a douche, especially with how he was nickel and diming the valuation. 5% investment is nothing. He was smart to change his mind go go with Lori. Total QVC item.
Liked the last segment with the Sharks talking among themselves and the recaps since this was episode 100. But, most of the new products in the episode were mostly forgettable. I was surprised that Lori invested in that non dairy cheese. I don't think I've ever seen her invest in food. |

Personally, I would have went went Robert over Barbara (who had a pretty meh offer). |

Groovebook is an online company that sells subscriptions to make photo albums. I think they had some proprietary method to conform with USPS media mail. They made a deal with Kevin and Mark and they just got bought by Shuttlefly for 14.5 million dollars. I think we will see an update very soon.

And to it's credit, it really does work! Though those sales numbers are pretty crazy, I guess Stern listeners really went for it as well! I dunno how this will play out on QVC, but I'll definitely be tuning in to check it out. :) |
Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
The concept of the Squatty Potty has been around for a few years now. A.J. Jacobs wrote about the idea in his book about health and it's popular in the Paleo/Crossfit crowd.

Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
I wouldn't mind getting one, but do they have a travel size for when I'm taking a "break" at work. Also, does it have an attachment to prevent my legs falling asleep when I keep trying to beat one more level?
|
Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
Hated seeing that cooking/steaming thing sold. I don't want people cooking salmon at work. Yuck.
I guess I'm out of it. Never heard of GoPro. |
Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
Never heard of GoPro? It is a billion dollar company that owns nearly all of the market for small cameras made for action sports.
|
Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
Nope. I haven't bought a camera in 20 years. I think the last camera I ever used (besides my phone) was some disposable shitty one at a wedding a decade ago. Last camera I ever bought was one of those Kodak disc jobs. My father loved Nikon and some old German brand. That's about all I know about cameras. And even if I did buy one, when would I take action photography? I can't get off the couch on a weekend. And my vacations are sitting on the beach or on a blackjack table in Vegas.
|
Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
I first heard of Go Pro about 2 weeks ago when SNL made a parody of it.

Re: Shark Tank (ABC) -- Series Thread Part II
Wow, you guys are out of the loop.
I liked the Magic Cook but not for what she was pitching it as, for lunches? I'm with Red Dog, what a disaster using salmon as an example. But for camping, survival and just having one handy for emergencies makes sense. Not to mention the continual revenue stream from people buying the packs seems like a great value add. What I'm curious about is why they didn't get into patent questions about the pouch. Seems like there could be some avenues to exploit there. I'm thinking military use. It would allow soldiers behind enemy lines the ability to cook meals without starting fires and having smoke. Kinda bummed the Off the Cob guy didn't get an offer. It's a really unique concept and really shone a light on the tortilla market. That was some interesting stuff. O'Leary was a total douche to the Kitchen Safe guy. I don't see a need for it, but if there is any truth to his testimonials, then there is a real market for such a device. My question, which wasn't discussed, is what happens when the battery dies? What if the battery dies while locked? $50 for a single container though is absurd. Earth Log isn't all that flashy but kinda cool. They should have lit one to show off how little smoke there is. Plus the Sharks could comment on the smell. Seemed like a limp presentation. Seemed like an uphill climb for a Shark, but glad he got a deal. It's kinda boring seeing the Sharks invest in products that are already successful just so they can cash in(like O'Leary mentioned). It's far more interesting to take a guy that clearly needs a mentor to push that product to the masses. |

I'm curious - for those in the know. How did you discover GoPro? Is it advertised on TV? Action cameras don't seem like a big deal to me. Now that everyone has a camera in their phone. But maybe I'm stupid. |

What can I say. I have multiple TVs going avoiding commercials. I never see a commercial on a football Sunday what with RZC. And all the other stuff I watch is off a DVR. I rarely see commercials. Only time is if I'm watching a standalone game. It's the same deal I have now with TV actors -- I have no idea who they are in real life since there are no opening credits.

Some samples: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAxqf5ZAssw GoPro isn't the only option for this sort of thing, but it is the biggest name by far. |

Well, the guy did mention go pro camera a million times when on the show. You can say his $100,000 investment is just a national commercial that people don't skip. This show is basically an hour long advertisement for various products that people willingly watch.
I've never minded Mr. Wonderful's blunt talk, but this season feels like he's just being mean for the sake of it. |

they've been used in big movies too, The Hobbit and Transformers 4 are two that I know of.

I remember 60 Minutes did a good segment on GoPro a while back.
