Someone mentioned earlier why don't cosplay designers get models to wear their costumes, but that is essentially what Jinyo is doing. Victoria comes up with the ideas, but it seems like he does all the heavy lifting for the cosplay she wears.

That's the issue that I have with her, from what they show on the show. She does very little work on her costumes and expects to win. The important thing that I've taken away is that the work put into the costume is a big factor in deciding if you win or not. If you tell the judges that you designed it, but didn't do all of the work (or at least a majority) you get knocked down in score. How is it that she's shocked each time she isn't picked for a win? Seriously her bf should be the one getting the credit for her costumes.

Season finale coming up tonight. I guess we'll see the team competition, with Yaya, Riki, and Monika doing the "Alice" theme and Holly, Jessica, and Becky doing "How to Train Your Dragon." It didn't look like Victoria, Chloe, or Jesse were entering the team contest.

How were those prancing fairies even in the same league?

I missed this episode but I'll catch the rerun after I finish the rerun of Face Off.

If this series comes back for another season, I hope they borrow from the Face Off template and ditched as much of the fake drama as possible.

Re: Heroes of Cosplay on Syfy

At first this episode started out pretty bad (Jinyo got paid to propose, right?) but it got progressively better. I've never been a fan of Yaya but I liked her costume (except for the hands that looked cheap compared to everything else) and the whole skit was really ambitious and overall great.

That said, what the fuck did the judges see in those fairies? They absolutely sucked!

Then again, I also don't get why the female Doctor Who's won a craftsmanship award.

I recorded these and saved them on my DVR. When I want to feel manly and non-geeky, I'll watch one of these.

Re: Heroes of Cosplay on Syfy

The show briefly mentioned it, but it looked like the locals at Planet Comicon were unhappy that big-time, professional cosplayers came to their convention in Kansas City for the contest. There was no way a local team was going to beat out Yaya's team in the skit. Their costumes and skit were in another league from the rest.

I think people have to remember that this show heavily featured semi-professional cosplayers. Go to a comic book convention and you'll run across a lot of amateurish costumes that look a lot worse.

Yeah, the audience and the Female Doctor Who's were giving them shit.

I think the judges just gave the awards the Fairies and the Female Doctor Who's got simply because they were locals.

I have friends who are cosplayers and have seen my fair share of good and shitty costumes.

Re: Heroes of Cosplay on Syfy

We sat there in stunned anger. We'd been told there was a race, and so we had trained to run, only to discover that our competition was driving Ferraris.
What a piss poor 'oh poor us' blog. Did they think that just regular people with Party City costumes (the fairies) were going to be competing for Hundreds in cash prizes?
Yelling, I tried to explain this was the only chance most of us get to go to a convention, and since we can only afford to compete once or so a year, it means a lot to us.
Cons are a big thing now and to act as if only locals should attend is silly.
This whole 'I'm a villain' thing is nothing but her way of getting herself attention to try and become something, maybe even a new cast member of the show. She wants her 15min because her 2min on TV wasn't enough.

Re: Heroes of Cosplay on Syfy

I was sorry to see the bad attitudes in the show last night, and I'm also sorry to read about the way the show handled the arrangements. It sounds like there is plenty of blame to go around on both sides.

I thought both teams themselves did very well, despite all the drama beforehand with Riki being sick and Becky's problem with her eyes. All of the costumes on Yaya's team were amazing-looking. The "dragon" on the other team was very effective.

I like that Holly called Monika out on being such a bitch to Becky. I'm not sure Monika took the lesson to heart, though.

I agree a lot of it is sour grapes. It does sound like SyFy (or the production team) were sort of d-bags about the way they handled things at these events (this is far from the first negative story about them, and this is actually one of the tamer ones), but I don't get taking it out on the cast members.

One of the other girls had a slightly more balanced take on the events:
http://itmightbehere.tumblr.com/post...y-tv-is-staged

If this show returns they need to seriously reevaluate how they handle these events. If they want to have greater control over the contests maybe they need to host their own costume events at these cons. And I think the cast is talented enough they don't need to pull this last minute "Oh, and by the way everyone else, there's a skit" nonsense to make the cast look better. Or if they want to make this show all about competition tweak the format so it's more like Face Off.

They should probably just make it like Face/Off so we can see the process rather than the drama.

Much of the show's drama is due to the build-up in seeing who places in the contests. It's always great to see the responses after someone hears or doesn't hear their name being called as a winner.

If you're talking about Face Off, yes. Not so much when talking about this show. The bulk of the drama in Heroes of Cosplay has been the girls being bitchy to each other, going out for drinks when supposedly they are crunching to meet a deadline (it really makes it hard to take them seriously whenever they do that) and talking shit about each other.

The drama that actually relates to the design and creation of the costumes and whether or not they place in competition has been a secondary concern to this show.

Well I guess I have to eat my words about the craftsmanship award.

And if shit was really this bad, do you suppose that's why the judges were disinterested in looking at the costumes up close during pre-judging? Perhaps they knew one of these two were going to win once the SyFy producers told them which one and the judges figured "why bother pretending?"

Re: Heroes of Cosplay on Syfy

I would think so. That is really what bites. I want to enjoy a show but when you see stuff like this happening, you cant really take the show seriously. This is why I suggested go the way Face/Off does and lets see who comes up with the best costumes and [small] skits and award them.
If SyFy is going to be there and throwing around their 'ways' then I guess it's not really fair and it does suck if someone is put in a bad light due to editing.

You're preaching to the choir, brother. Face Off definitely feels like the right template for this show. Heck, in some of the cons I've gone to, they've had professional models, in full costume (like zombies for The Walking Dead or soldiers for Resident Evil). Maybe they could re-format the show about moving on from competition to actual costume gigs. Not that it'll stop SyFy from any underhanded BS but they may as well leave the real competitions alone.

This is why I suggested they could have their own separate costume event at the events they're crashing. Most of these cons supposedly never offered cash prizes until the show came and threw cash at them... and once the cash came into play the show felt entitled to interfere with these existing contests. So they could retain the original official contests with no prizes/smaller prizes (and no tampering) that are just for fun, and also have the Heroes of Cosplay sponsored contest where they were doling out big prizes, but you know going in you may have to deal with their shenanigans.

The original contest could exist for the purists, and the HoC one could exist for the show and for those willing to try to compete with the 'Heroes' for the possibility of a bigger purse. Hell, they could even play up the fact and give it sort of an Iron Chef angle... "Do you have what it takes to take on the Heroes of Cosplay?"

I like it and will claim it as my own during the next SyFy/51 Minds production meeting.

Re: Heroes of Cosplay on Syfy

Sadly this wont happen. The element of the show is Cosplay at the Cons and that's their 'home'.
Not much is the professional way of cosplay that it gets you to do it professionally other than displays at cons for companies of Movie, TV and Video Games. Face/Off is there to show off a talent that can and will be used in Movies and TV. Only thing I see that goes from hobby to professional in cosplay is modeling

If they would just remove the drama, emphasize on the costume making, then it could be a good start. If SyFy influence cash prizes at contests, then stop it. But as far as I know most do this as well as trophies.

Locals need to stop bitching as well. Cons generate the masses from all over and to think, or fell rather, that only they need apply, they are sadly mistaken.
Just get up there and have fun and enjoy what you do. If you're so worried then maybe you need to brush up on your costume making skills

I mean c'mon. 3 Party City Fairy costumes got a huge pop !

Re: Heroes of Cosplay on Syfy

Did you even read the blogs, VHS? The problem wasn't that the HoC teams weren't locals. It's the underhanded way that SyFy stacked the deck in their favor and then re-edited/dubbed the locals reactions to make them come across as petty. And it also seems that the ire of the locals was towards SyFi/51 Minds rather than the cast of HoC.

The locals weren't informed in advance of the new rules SyFy/51 Minds imposed on the competition. Instead, they were told of the skits on the day of competition. Which is totally unfair since the two teams with foreknowledge had lighting cues and, in the case of Yaya's team, set props and stage hands. That's some pretty underhanded bullshit.

Re: Heroes of Cosplay on Syfy

Oh I agree and I read the blogs. I was just stating in general because when the first blog came about I had already heard for a long time that locals get upset at 'travelers' coming to do these masquerades. Not just within this show. I guess it just reminded me of it is what I was saying.

As for what SyFy did, I agree, if true, that it's a dick move just to get the show they want.
I did not go to this years SDCC masquerade so not sure if they filmed or not but would be interesting to see because I have been in years past and know many do props and skits. Maybe they did this because this particular Con did not have anyone doing skits? Maybe this Con is small to where they just go up and pose and leave? I dont know. Maybe SyFy wanted to 'jazz it up' but they should have let everyone in on it. not just their cast.
