I don't get why people are upset the mtv awards have always been geared toward a high school aged demo. If there had been a really big Justin Beaver or Katy Perry type singer who appealed to teens in 1992 then they would have have been headling the show and not Nirvana and U2.

That's a good point, but it wasn't as bad (IMHO) as it is now. Sure, in 1989 for instance, the big winner was Paula Abdul. But, other winners included Neil Young (for Best Video!), Elvis Costello, Living Colour, and R.E.M. It just seems like the ratio of bad to good is so much higher now.
He's no Chris Rock. The show needs someone who can good naturedly rip on the celebs. Making fun of people is an art. It's easy to go too far, and it's easy not to go far enough (bland).
I haven't watched the event yet (recorded) but at least Chris Brown and Rihanna had their moment (hug/cheek kiss). Alas, it wasn't aired.

But you get why that is. The people who watch these awards are watching to see their favorite celebrities/artists -- not the directors of videos or choreographers. Unless the director/choreographer is a celebrity or artist.
It's not just that the VMAs are targeted towards a young audience, but it's towards a very specific type of young audience. I think if you're watching this show, and you're older than 25, you're getting what you deserve. There are no surprises with what this show has turned into, because it has been this way for a decade now? I ffwd through the show just out of morbid curiosity, but I'm hyper aware that this show is not for me. At all.

I heard Taylor Swift's closing performance was good.
The biggest thing on the show though, wasn't even shown on camera with the whole Rhianna hugging and kissing her abusive ex (I'm not even going to acknowledge his name).
Does such wonderful things for women trapped in abusive relationships, let me tell you.

Get over it man. I wish people would really get over that incident. To this day no one knows what happened that night(yeah I know you going to say the obvious well she got beat it) except Brown and Rihanna. I've always thought Rihanna was just as guilty as Brown in the situation and that is why she "comes off" as more forgiving and still has strong feelings for Brown. She knows she's not the angel you and a million others portray her to be and Brown isn't the devil you and a million others portray him to be.
