the scary thing is that this was only 9 years ago (and still better then anything Kevin Hart did tonight)

I don't get why people are upset the mtv awards have always been geared toward a high school aged demo. If there had been a really big Justin Beaver or Katy Perry type singer who appealed to teens in 1992 then they would have have been headling the show and not Nirvana and U2.

That's a good point, but it wasn't as bad (IMHO) as it is now. Sure, in 1989 for instance, the big winner was Paula Abdul. But, other winners included Neil Young (for Best Video!), Elvis Costello, Living Colour, and R.E.M. It just seems like the ratio of bad to good is so much higher now.

I'm looking through the categories and even the rock category sucks.

If we're talking VIDEO music awards, I have no problem with Paula Abdul winning, especially if the video was for Opposites Attract, which was a nice video. I'm pretty sure (or at least I hope) she's never won a Grammy.

He's no Chris Rock. The show needs someone who can good naturedly rip on the celebs. Making fun of people is an art. It's easy to go too far, and it's easy not to go far enough (bland).

I haven't watched the event yet (recorded) but at least Chris Brown and Rihanna had their moment (hug/cheek kiss). Alas, it wasn't aired.

It's not just that the VMAs are targeted towards a young audience, but it's towards a very specific type of young audience. I think if you're watching this show, and you're older than 25, you're getting what you deserve. There are no surprises with what this show has turned into, because it has been this way for a decade now? I ffwd through the show just out of morbid curiosity, but I'm hyper aware that this show is not for me. At all.
Yeah I definitely get why that is, it's just sort of funny. Even in '97-99 when they were trying way too hard to be cool with all the commercials and that 10 Spot stuff they still did a good job with the VMAs.

Then again even on a site like this dedicated to movies, you get people complaining about having to sit through sound mixers and editors during the Oscars. Ridiculous.

Kevin Hart is what happens when you cross the comedy style of Chris Rock with the shrill voice of Chris Tucker, and then put it in a short as hell, less talented package.

He's funny enough though.

I heard Taylor Swift's closing performance was good.

The biggest thing on the show though, wasn't even shown on camera with the whole Rhianna hugging and kissing her abusive ex (I'm not even going to acknowledge his name).

Does such wonderful things for women trapped in abusive relationships, let me tell you.

I'll acknowledge his name. Chris Brown. And Rihanna has no obligation whatsoever to live for the women trapped in abusive relationships. She didn't put them there and it isn't her responsibility to get them out. As for Chris Brown, if she's over it, I'm over it. She knows him a lot better than I do. There's a possibility she has some kind of Stockholm Syndrome, but it's also possible she's exactly who she wants to be, has control of her life, and is living exactly how she wants to live. If so, more power to her. No skin off my back.

Get over it man. I wish people would really get over that incident. Plenty of people specifically celebrities have done worse way worse over and over again and you would probably acknowledge their names. To this day no one knows what happened that night(yeah I know you going to say the obvious well she got beat it) except Brown and Rihanna. I've always thought Rihanna was just as guilty as Brown in the situation and that is why she "comes off" as more forgiving and still has strong feelings for Brown. She knows she's not the angel you and a million others portray her to be and Brown isn't the devil you and a million others portray him to be.

Bottom line again get over it. It's not that deep.

Yeah, Kevin Hart is fine doing standup, but he can't hold a candle to Chris Rock.

Everybody is waiting for Rock to drop a special next year, and whether Obama gets re-elected or not, it will be great.

I've seen him live a couple times, and it's well worth the money.

I've had friends who were abused. Its not something to just brush off because of it.

Would people be less upset over Rihanna hugging Chris Brown if he had any kind of talent and his so-called "music" didn't suck ass?

(Then again, maybe they're perfect for each other.)

Just like Marcellus Wallace and Antoine Rockamora.
