I was under the impression the time changed to 7pm to not interfere with Obama's speech tonight?

I remember when this show used to be a big deal to me. I'm an old head now, and so it doesn't hold much appeal, but they have been hyping Kanye up a bunch in the promos so I'll record it just to see what he does.

Best Video With A Message? Most Share-Worthy Video?
WTF? Why don't they just go all the way and give out the MOST L337 VIDEO EVA! award? |
Re: the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards-- 09/06/12 -- 8pm -- Host Kevin Hart
Cause MTV still plays music videos right?
|
Re: the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards-- 09/06/12 -- 8pm -- Host Kevin Hart
The nominations don't even make sense. So e of the videos of the year aren't even up for their respective gender's awards

Kevin Hart is brutally unfunny

This is NOT just about me being too old and out of touch at 42. My dad listened to Warren Zevon and my mother had The Who, Elton, The Eagles and all the Beatles records. AC/DC was my first concert at 13.
I loved the stuff my parents listened to. It's still great music. I loved the stuff I grew up on through maybe the mid-90's and then the direction started to shift and now it's fallen off of a cliff. I like good pop music. I'll listen to some Katy Perry and I might even go see her if someone else paid for the tickets. Mostly 'cause she's hot. But most of that stuff really just seems like junk and really junk, not stuff I think is junk because I don't get what it's like to be 13. My oldest girl who's 8 loves Taylor Swift, but she doesn't even think Justin Bieber's cute. She actually has a Foo Fighters poster over her desk. I've also never heard of the host. I do know this must still be a big deal to celebrities because Emma Watson was on a quick break from filming in Iceland and was in NYC to do Letterman and then said she was flying straight to LA to be at these awards. |

In the 1992 show, MTV requested Nirvana perform "Smells Like Teen Spirit", while the band itself had indicated it preferred to play new songs "Rape Me" and "tourette's". Network executives continued to push for "Teen Spirit" but finally offered the band a choice to play either "Teen Spirit" or "Lithium", which the band appeared to accept. At the performance, Nirvana began to play, and Kurt Cobain sang the first few lines of the song, "Rape Me", much to the horror of MTV execs, before continuing their regular performance of "Lithium". Near the end of the song, frustrated that his amp had stopped functioning, bassist Krist Novoselic decided to toss his bass into the air for dramatic effect. He misjudged the landing, and the bass ended up bouncing off of his forehead, forcing him to stumble off the stage in a daze.
Backstage, before the show, Guns N' Roses vocalist Axl Rose challenged Cobain to a fight after he, his wife and Hole frontwoman, Courtney Love, and Nirvana bandmates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, egged him on. At the end of Nirvana's performance, while Cobain was trashing the band's equipment, Dave Grohl ran to the microphone and shouted "Hi, Axl! Where's Axl?" repeatedly. Guns N' Roses' video for the ballad "November Rain" won the MTV Video Music Award for best cinematography. During the show, the band performed "November Rain" with singer Elton John. Because of the dispute Rose had with Cobain, moments before the "November Rain" performance, Cobain spat on the keys of what he thought was Axl's piano. Cobain later revealed that he was shocked to see Elton John play on the piano he had spat on. During the commercial break, the Alien 3 Pepsi commercial was shown. Radio shock-jock Howard Stern appeared as Fartman, Stern's radio super-hero. Stern was a presenter for best hard rock/metal performance with actor Luke Perry (after several other celebrities turned him down). Winners that year included: Nirvana Van Halen Eric Clapton Annie Lennox Metallica U2 Red Hot Chili Peppers Prince Queen Guns N' Roses |

Also surprising is that they had cinematography awards then. These days 100% of the credit for the visual media probably goes to the artist, maybe one award in the whole night goes to a director of any kind.

Re: the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards-- 09/06/12 -- 8pm -- Host Kevin Hart
True. There were awards for:
Best Direction Best Choreography Best Special Effects Best Art Direction Best Editing Best Cinematography None of these went to the artists, but instead to the people who actually make the videos. Now we get banal garbage like "Best Video with a Message." The dumbing down continues. |

This Sway guy has been working at MTV for a long time, right? What does he do in between the movie and music award shows?

It's not just that the VMAs are targeted towards a young audience, but it's towards a very specific type of young audience. I think if you're watching this show, and you're older than 25, you're getting what you deserve. There are no surprises with what this show has turned into, because it has been this way for a decade now? I ffwd through the show just out of morbid curiosity, but I'm hyper aware that this show is not for me. At all. |

When I was a teen to early 20's, this was the must see event of the year for me. Now, I barely watched 15 minutes of the show. I know i'm way past the age limit to enjoy it now and i'm ok with it.
