Thanks.

I watched the first four seasons, but it has been a few months since I went back to it. I still have Britbox, so I will try to finish it out at some point.

It was on Netflix, but removed a few months back. The new series is on BBC2, but no word, AFAIK, on North America. So, download it is!

Re: General UK TV Show chatter.

I just signed up for Acorn TV. Any recommendations? I’m currently watching Doc Martin, Detectorists, and A Place To Call Home.

Re: General UK TV Show chatter.

On Acorn, I dug Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (3 seasons), and Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries (2 seasons) which are actually both Australian productions. Lighthearted stuff for the most part, and the lead actress’s carry these shows very well. Good chemistry with the casts. And yes, each show is somewhat linked to the other, but it doesn’t matter which order you see them in.

Also, The Wine Show is great if you’re into, well - wine.

Re: General UK TV Show chatter.

Doc Martin and Detectorists are both excellent. Detectorists is one of my favourites. The Simon and Garfunkel jokes are perfect.

From what I can see, and have watched, I would recommend:

The Indian Doctor - Comedy drama with Sanjeev Bhaskar as an Indian doctor in a small Welsh mining town in the 60s.
Sensitive Skin - Surprisingly, they have the Canadian version of this, starring the lovely Kim Cattrall. I'm pretty sure there's a UK version, which is why I'm surprised Acorn would have the Canadian version. Regardless, I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Whites - A sitcom about a hotel kitchen. Lots of familiar faces in this.
Reggie Perrin - A modern version of the original Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (which starred Leonard Rossiter), which stars Martin Clunes as Reggie. Pretty good, but having recently rewatched it, it wasn't quite as good as I remembered. Still worth a watch, though, if only for Lucy Liemann. It's another sitcom, so you'll know if you like it within an episode or 2.

Thanks for the recommendations! Does anyone know how to watch First Dates UK? They used to be on HBO Max and I was about halfway through and they were removed. They don't appear to be on Acorn or Britbox.

Re: General UK TV Show chatter.

I'm two episodes into The Detectorists and I'm really enjoying it. I didn't know Mackenzie Crook wrote most of the episodes and directed every episode. That's quite impressive.

I also watched the first episode of Fleabag and I thought it was great too.

Re: General UK TV Show chatter.

I loved the Detectorists. And bonus for being a great show you can watch with the whole family.

Fleabag is making its way around the younger folks finally. My daughter recommended it to me and I had to remind her I recommended it to her like 3 or 4 years ago.

Re: General UK TV Show chatter.

Yes, Fleabag is another great show.

FWIW, Detectorists is coming out with a special, in December. I'm really looking forward to that.

Considering you like Detectorists, and Fleabag, keep an eye out for a show called The Cafe (the show by Ralf Little, not the same named chat program). Phoebe Waller-Bridge also has a role in it, and it has a similar 'niceness' and subtle humor that I find with Detectorists.

Re: General UK TV Show chatter.

It looks like The Cafe is only available on BritBox right now. I was interested in checking out Lovejoy, but for some reason only season 6 is available on Acorn and season one is only available through PBS Masterpiece. I'll be busy with Doc Martin, The Detectorists, and A Place To Call Home for next two months. I had a promotional deal and received 2 months of Acorn TV for .99 cents a month for Prime Day.

Re: General UK TV Show chatter.

We just finished Harlan Coben’s Stay Close.

I don’t know it’s UK chatter since it’s a Netflix production (I assumed they purchased from BBC, ITV, Sky; turns out they didn’t).

It had some quirky plotting, and questionable performance from the lead, but was enjoyable. It’s only 8 episodes so not a big investment. It took a few episodes to get going, but the policing was the most interesting part. James Nesbit was probably the standout highlight.

I will say I genuinely didn’t know who was responsible until the last episode; so that was a bonus.

I finished Detectorists and I loved it. I thought season 3 was the best and funniest season. I loved how it ended, but I'm excited to watch the new special.

Re: General UK TV Show chatter.

The new season of CB Strike is coming out tomorrow on HBO. There was absolutely no marketing for this one. I know the author behind the series is controversial, but I love the books and the characters. They do a good job adapting it for television.

Anyone watch Doc Martin? We're on S6 and loving it. Even though the main character is unlikeable, his rudeness can be funny.

Re: General UK TV Show chatter.

I really enjoyed Doc Martin. Although he could be rude, I did not find him particularly unlikeable.

His interaction with dogs is always good for a laugh. There were a lot of interesting guest stars throughout the series, as well.

If you're not aware, there were also 2 Doc Martin movies, prior to the series.

A couple of other Martin Clunes series I enjoyed are Reggie Perrin (a reworking of the old Leonard Rossiter series, The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin), and William and Mary.

His interaction with dogs is what put me off him. Anyone who kicks a dog is a piece of shit IMO.

Re: General UK TV Show chatter.

I like Doc Martin. I always thought he was clearly on the spectrum and that explains a lot of his personality quirks. He also has obvious issues with dogs from his childhood that they flashbacked to once or twice.

Re: General UK TV Show chatter.

I like Kate and Koji. It's a comedy about an African doctor who is trying to get residence in the UK and works unofficially as a doctor in a cafe. It's on Britbox. It ran for three seasons but I think it's been cancelled so there likely won't be a fourth season.
