I dropped it due to a scheduling conflict(not cause Carell left), and caught up later. I have no issues with leads leaving (I'm one of the few that likes the last season of Scrubs, I've enjoyed Fishburne & Danson on CSI), but this last season was dreadfully bad.

But, but, but Michael was such a buffoon, the show HAD to get better once he left

I definitely didn't leave because of Carell leaving, but after 3-4 episodes of the new season it was obvious the show took a step down. Whether it was because of him leaving or not I don't know, but it just wasn't enjoyable.

Re: The Farm - Dwight from The Office spin off

No, I agree. It wasn't about Carrell leaving, the writing just got lazy and generic. Old sitcom gags started getting played out. The episode where Dwight brought a gun to work and accidentally fired it, and the rest of the office blackmailed him into doing silly gags so they wouldn't tell Kathy Bates. Could you see that happening in season 2? It played like a laugh track sitcom, and that wasn't even the most current season. The last season to date is ripe with gags like that. However I understand you can't play up the "hey it's like a real workplace" angle forever, but isn't there some middle ground?

It was renewed for a full 22 episodes for this upcoming 9th season.

This does sound hilariously bad, like a parody of a parody. This is what happens when you continually flog a dead horse.

The writers haven't had 22 ideas in 5 seasons! This will not turn out good.

Re: The Farm - Dwight from The Office spin off

The idea just sounds like they created a bunch of wacky characters without much of a real concept for a show.

If I had to think of a Dwight spinoff, I'd have Dwight and Angela get married, and Dwight gets a job somewhere in California. They could move into a sunny suburban neighborhood full of liberals, hippy-types, gay couples, etc. which would cause a culture clash for both of them. If done correctly they could subtly poke jabs at both sides but still keep it fun (Parks & Rec is the best example of this). It's still rife with cliches, but at least it's something they could build on and it could play to the character's strengths, as opposed to throwing an already oddball character in with bigfoot hunters and Nazis.

God, this sounds awful. Spin-offs featuring oddball characters usually don't work. If they really had to do a spin-off series, it should have been with "straight man" characters like Jim and Pam. The Office died when Carrell left, NBC should forget about any spin-offs and cancel it already.

Actually, that's not bad, DRG. Get a spec script to NBC by Monday.

I'll watch an episode, but that sounds like a terrible idea. Perhaps I'll be pleasantly surprised and it'll turn out much better than that summary makes it sound.

Should have done a spin off with Kevin. Starting with him gambling his way to millions of dollars, moving to vegas and having the cast based in a casino.

Good. That means no wasted episode this season to set up the spinoff.

They will probably still air the backdoor pilot.

It's Dead. They shot the Pilot, but NBC passed on it. The story says that it's uncertain if the Pilot will even air as part of this season of The Office.

Now I'm kind of interested in seeing how godawful it is.

Re: The Farm - Dwight from The Office spin off

Can be any more painful than this last season of The Office, right?

I remember when I teared up and laughed a lot while watching this show. Remember when Jim and Michael were talking side-by-side, and Jim came to the realization that he was going to be working at Dundler Mifflin in 15 years? That was very emotional. What happened lately? I remember a strong moment when Jim saved Dwight from getting fired at that meeting.

Now? I just want the show to die so I can stop watching (I feel obligated). Like a fatally ill spouse that you just can't leave because you respect the sanctity of marriage too much - but they just won't fucking die.

Somebody on TV Talk said he saw it at some screening and would post thoughts later.
