The Farm - Dwight from The Office spin off
The Office’s Dwight Schrute has a dream to be a boss, and it’s inching closer to being a reality.
TVLine has secured exclusive intel on casting for The Farm, the buzzed-about planted spin-off to star Rainn Wilson‘s ambitious off-kilter character. The prospective off-shoot will sneak peek as an episode of The Office’s upcoming Season 9 before getting the green light to make a go of it on its own.
In the new show, Dwight and his kin inherit a large family farm/bed-and-breakfast. When the bespectacled beet farmer decides to give the new venture a go, he must talk his brother and sister into joining him.
What’s that you say? You’d like more info on the rest of the cast? So far, the series regular roles include:
FANNIE SCHRUTE | Attractive, urban and in her late 20s/early 30s, Dwight’s younger sister fled the Schrute farm life for Boston as soon as she could, and has had little to do with her roots for quite some time. Now divorced with one son, Fannie is “a bit of a pseudo-intellectual lefty” with an ironic sense of humor and a great heart.
JEB SCHRUTE | Dwight’s easygoing thirtysomething brother hasn’t done well in any of the career paths he’s followed – worm breeder and Bigfoot hunter among them — but has found some success with a pot farm. He’s got none of Dwight’s dedication or work ethic, but he has made an exercise video about things you can do with a knife and a canoe. (We like him already.)
CAMERON WHITMAN | Dwight’s smart and slightly weird 9-year-old nephew (Fannie’s son) is a cosmopolitan lad who nevertheless feels the pull of his Schrute heritage, especially when he’s around someone — his uncles, perhaps? — who can offer the fatherly guidance he lacks.
HEINRICH MANHEIM | The Schrute siblings’ great uncle is charming, greedy, manipulative… and just may have had to spend time in Argentina following World War II, thanks to his German National Socialist roots. Oh, and he vows to kill Dwight by the end of the first episode.
There is no word yet on the whereabouts of cousin Mose (played now and again by Office co-exec producer Michael Schur) or whether the titular farm is the same one Dwight has called home all these years. You’ll recall that he’s already tried being a hotelier — in Season 4, Pam and Jim even spent a romantic night “away” as guests of the Schrute homestead — so here’s hoping Dwight’s improved on his hospitality since!

I don't mind Rainn Wilson and Dwight is an okay character for The Office but I'm not sure I want to see a whole show that revolves around him. Also this has to about kill The Office. With Michael gone already, Dwight, Ryan, Kelly, and Toby leaving that takes a good chunk of their cast.

Don't get me wrong, those were good shows. But there's every sitcom cliche being thrown in. Personally, I can't wait for the episode where Dwight has 2 dates in the same night.

This show won't last.
If anyone will forever be typecast in to a role, it will be Rainn Wilson. He's really dedicated to Dwight.

I have only watched a few eps of CSI: Miami but for some reason I dreamed the other night that LeBlanc took over for Caruso on that show and it was immediately cancelled.
I was watching tv and he was on the show and I had no idea he was on it. Then the show was cancelled during the broadcast.

I can't wait for Shonda Rhimes to tweet about the lack of diversity on this show.
Where are the people of color for my children to look up to, while dreaming of being beet farmer/B&B owners?

A brother and sister that Dwight never once mentioned during eight seasons on The Office - where he'd routinely talk about his family and his upbringing - an adorable moppet, and a Nazi. This is going to be awesome...ly bad.

Dwight never having referenced siblings before is no surprise. Spinoffs always do that. On Cheers Frasier Crane once said he was an orphan, and once said his dad was a scientist. Then when the spinoff appears, his father is a retired police officer, he suddenly has a brother and they're suddenly in Seattle.
For all we know they might just give Dwight a B&B in Miami Beach and maybe him and Mose will solve crimes on the side too.

This sounds worse than Joey, and we all know how great Joey was.
Time for the Office to close up shop. Did NBC order a short season like their other shows? If so I might tune in, if not I'll just check out the finale.

Sounds awful and I've grown tired of the Dwight character. I'm sure I'll check this out though, just to give it a shot. Maybe if the rest of the cast is any good it could work.

I would be down for a complete reboot of the Office. A new type of company, a new location, all new characters (again, except maybe Creed). This Farm business just sounds shitty.

I always thought it'd be funny if they did an Office type scripted show about the cast and crew of a "Dirtiest Jobs" type reality show...

Re: The Farm - Dwight from The Office spin off
So will Rainn be doing double duty on both shows? Will he be leaving THE OFFICE? Or will he only be appearing occassionally on THE FARM?
I have to admit I haven't watched THE OFFICE since Steve Carell left...just lost interest.
