I thought it was good. The dramatic readings of the texts and facebook statuses, removal of the feathers, lots of nice little touches.
My wife's still getting caught up on season two, but she's a huge documentary watcher. I can't wait for her to see this episode.

Fantastic episode. In the top 5 best for me. As soon as it started my son and I got huge grins because we both loved Burns' Civil War doc.

I absolutely loved it. Had a huge grin on my face from beginning to end. Wasn't the biggest fan of last week's episode, but it paved the way for this one, and I'm thankful for that.
This is why Community exists. It takes chances, and this thread is evidence of that. There's nobody saying "It was adequate" (except for MortalPlage... kinda)
Comparing it to Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas. They both had their targets for the parody and they both faithfully recreated what they were going for. The Christmas episode did mock claymation specials, but all in all, not the greatest. However, with this episode, the plotline was extremely entertaining. They could have done it in normal style and had a good episode. Doing it in this style really elevated it.

Wow, I don't know what happened last night on TV but ratings were down all over the place. Community pulled a horrible 1.3 rating in 18 - 49, down .4 from last week, but it still topped the evening for NBC:
30 Rock 1.2 rating
Office (Repeat) 1.0 rating
Up All Night 1.1 rating
Awake 0.9 rating
Even TBBT which was posting 5.5s a few weeks ago was down to a 4.2.

Office (Repeat) 1.0 rating
Up All Night 1.1 rating
Awake 0.9 rating

I never watched the Civil War ones but the first title screen was straight out of Band of Brothers (with the red line between the text right after naming an old guy who fought in the war). Hilarious.

I'm not a big fan of Burns' style which is probably why I didn't enjoy this ep as much as some of you. The pacing and tone was basically the antithesis of a quick, energetic comedy like Community. It had some funny gags, but ultimately it was a failed experiment.

I loved all the "map jokes" like the one about the North cafeteria (in the western portion of East Hall), and the "English Memorial Spanish Center" which was named after Portugese explorer English Memorial (who was searching for a magical fountain to cure syphilis).

You may not have enjoyed it, but it was not even close to a failed experiment. The majority of this thread should be enough to showcase that.

The 22 minutes FLEW by for me. Just when I thought they couldn't find something else to mock...they found something else. I just read EW's recap and want to go watch it all over again.

My wife and I met him at the Comic-Con NBC party last year and I was fully prepared for him to be a completely dismissive asshole based on his history. Before going my father in law told my wife "If you meet Chevy tell him I love Spies Like Us!" We get in the car and I say, "Promise me you won't ever tell Chevy Chase that your dad loves Spies Like Us." Cut to a month later at the party and my wife goes up to Chevy and says just that. Without saying a word he rips off her nametag and asks his wife/handler/whoever for a pen. He proceeds to ask what her dad's name is and writes "John, I love Spies too." and signs it. It was super awesome and I was totally shocked.
He was probably drunk.

I've rewatched it a few times today (no work, sue me) and I've warmed up to it considerably. The little touches that they put in this are freakin' genius. Most have been mentioned, but go back and watch the scene where Troy and Abed throw their imaginary hats, then go and watch the scene where Jeff goes back to the Dean's office to get them. Jeff "finds" them where Troy and Abed threw them. I suppose this speaks volumes about Jeff's growth as a human, but to me it's these little touches by the writers that make this show so great.
Also, I guess NBC is letting Community use the word "dick" once an episode. Hahaha!

I liked the concept of the episode, but it wasn't terribly funny. But, they get infinite credit for doing something original.

I'm pretty upset that I deleted this one immediately after watching it for space purposes. The more I think about it, the more I want to watch it a few more times this weekend.

I'm a fan of Ken Burns' docs and thought this was a really well done parody. Not a ton of laugh out loud moments, but some pretty funny stuff none-the-less.

I thought it was a really solid episode, agree it wasn't hilarious but it had some very funny moments and it was brilliantly done.
And I agree this is why I love Community.

Second, I like that they are experimental. By calling it a failed experiment I didn't mean to imply they didn't meet their goal of parodying a Burns doc. They obviously did a great job doing that. It's just, for me, it didn't work as a complete episode. But just like in science, even a failed experiment is a worthy endeavor.
It definitely didn't fly by for me, but then making time drag seems to be part of the Ken Burns treatment.
RE: Chevy being an ass.
Adam Carolla talked about the voice mail incident on his podcast earlier this week. Adam said he knows people who work on the show (He's friends with McHale although he said he wasn't talking about Joel in this case) and that every time he asks one of them how work is going he gets an earful of Chevy being an ass stories. He said he never brings it up, but Chevy always enters the conversation.

I liked it, but wasn't very funny. Community is one of a few shows that can rescue itself with cleverness and surprise, but I certainly see how some people might not like this episode. Throughout its run, the show has been very uneven.
