I didn't notice that! Hilarious.

I'm just confused by Moffat's run on Doctor Who the past couple seasons. His episodes during the first 4 seasons of New Who are some of my favorite episodes ever. Not just for Who, but for all of television. Sherlock is almost flawless. But the past few seasons of Who have been subpar. I'm just baffled. I was ecstatic when I found out he was taking over the show, but he's just disappointed me. I don't think it's Matt Smith's fault. I loved Tennant, but Smith has been acceptable. I think it's just the plotting and writing.

One thing, though. Moffat should be forbidden from having any characters say "Doctor Who" ever again. Must have heard that phrase 10 times this episode.

Yes, please, a million times yes. It makes me cringe every time someone says it.

Episodes under his watch have all suffered from "too much plot, not enough time". Everything just becomes "RUN RUN RUN SHOUT SHOUT SHOUT!"

I'm just trying to get through the terrible First Season in hopes of the Second/Third/Fourth being as good as many make them out to be. It's not that I don't like the 9th Doctor...it's just some of the writing is terrible. It doesn't help that Rose is a terrible companion and the shows seems right out of the early nineties.

So far, I've loved Matt Smith. He's fabulous.

I LOVE Doctor Who and was so happy to see it return back in 2005. However, re-watching them in order, the 1st and 2nd Series really don't stand out anymore. The sheen of "My God! The show is back!" is gone. They're a bit clunky and somewhat amateurish. There are some great episodes in those first two Series but, for me, the show really doesn't kick into gear until Series 3.

I think Matt Smith is great. I had trouble with how he was written during his first run but it feels like everyone is on the same page now.

Great episode. Easily my favorite Christmas special since The End of Time, although if we're only counting specific Christmas specials then I'd say best since Voyage of the Damned.

Glad Clara has arrived quickly, and introduced some much needed energy. I think it would be really fascinating if the new Clara died every episode with the Doctor "finding" her at different points in time along the way.

Oh my God! you killed Clara! You bahsterds!

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)

I think the first season is full of brilliance. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances is exceptional, as is Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways. Eccleston was so good, I wish he had gotten another season. Rose had much better chemistry with 9 than she did with 10.

Now season two, that's a serious stinker. The Girl In The Fireplace is the only episode from that season that I remember liking. So much of that season is spent setting up spin-off shows, Tennant doesn't really feel like the Doctor to me, and as I said, he and Rose don't have good chemistry. Plus we get maybe the most boring version of the Cybermen ever.

Seasons three, four, and five are the best the new series has been up to this point. I have high hopes for the second half of season seven.

Also, as to why Doctor Who hasn't been so exceptional when Sherlock has, well, I think there are a few points to be made. The first is that Sherlock is doing three episodes per season. Longer episodes, yes, but even if you cut the long episodes into DW length episodes, a single season of Sherlock would still be much shorter than an average season of DW. Second, Sherlock is in a world that has a lot more rules than DW, not just because of the fact that there isn't stuff like time travel and aliens, but also because of expectations for what Sherlock Holmes is. As brilliantly as they've remade Sherlock, they can't just throw everything out. Third, Sherlock is being adapted from source material, whereas DW is all original material. Yes, DW has history and continuity, but that's not the same as Sherlock, which is coming off of very revered and well known stories.

I think all of those elements play a factor into why Sherlock is kicking ass and taking names while DW seems to have been coasting lately. Again, I do hope with a new companion, things will pick up again.

I think we might be the only 2 Eccleston fans in existence. Although he was my first Doctor so I am definitely biased. I love Rose as well but like you said she had very little chemistry with Tennant.

I still don't think I have made it through the Tennant episodes. Season 2 was a serious chore other than the great The Girl in the Fireplace as was mentioned. By the time 3 came around I just couldn't do it anymore and skipped to season 5 and just went back and watched the pertinent Tennant episodes.

By far my favorite of the "New Who" Doctors. Tennant was great for the role, but Eccleston is a genuinely great actor. The less I say of Matt Smith, the better.

I also thought Eccleston is the best Nu-Who so far. Great stories, great actor, Rose wasn't a laughing harpy. I really wish he did at least one more season.

You're missing out on some great Who episodes by skipping seasons 3 and 4. I completely agree that season 2 was a chore to get through, and Tennant never feels like the Doctor to me in any of those episodes. Then, starting with season 3, everything clicks. There are so many excellent episodes in 3, and even more in 4.

FWIW, I think I prefer Martha Jones to all the other recent companions.

Martha Jones is highly underrated, I agree. I still think Rory's the best NuWho companion.

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)

Rory was a great companion, but he was never a companion on his own, but was always part of "Amy and Rory", and I didn't care much for Amy or Amy and Rory as a pair.

Supermallet 12-27-12 01:27 PM

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)

I can understand that. It would have been cool to see more episodes with just Rory and the Doctor.

Hell, I'd even be okay with a spin off Amy and Rory in NY show.

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)

Count me as another Eccleston fan :) As for Matt Smith, I thought his first season was good but it was in his second that he really stepped up. My favorite of his episodes is "When a good man goes to war", which was fantastic. I really enjoy it when the show deals with the Doctor being the last of the Time Lords and in different seasons when the Doctor talks about the Time war and his participation. I especially enjoy the episodes when the Doctor is confronted with how much of a Warrior he's become without realizing it and how he has caused all his companions to be Warriors as well when that was the last thing he wanted. Matt Smith is growing in the role and I laughed alot through this episode, as well as others (Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" had me giggling). I haven't been disappointed enough in any of the episodes to stop watching, although I admit there are some clunkers. Over all I enjoy the fact that all the alien races are either terrified or at least extremely wary whenever they discover the Doctor is a Timelord or that he is THE DOCTOR.

As for companions, I really think Clara/Oswin will be great cause she was great in this episode and the episode from last season when she appeared. Not much great sci-fi left on television with Fringe ending, Eureka, BSG gone. Of course Warehouse 13, Alphas and Haven are still on but Doctor Who is still Doctor Who.

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)

I loved Matt Smith right away. A few of the actors I didn't buy in the role immediately, including Hartnell, Troughton, McCoy, and Tennant. Smith is not one of those. By the time he announces he is the Doctor at the end of The Eleventh Hour, I believed him. Tennant didn't win me over until Smith and Jones in season three.

The Snowmen had 1.434 million viewers on BBC America from 9-10:20 on Christmas night, which, if I'm remembering my figures correctly, makes it the second-highest single telecast ever on the channel (the highest-rated single telecast is the S7 premiere, which had about 1.55 million viewers). Hooray!

I'm a Who novice, having watched only a couple specials and none of the original or new series, but I watched The Snowmen and liked it. Clara was pretty cute.

I'll be in the UK the week after these are released!

Hopefully the new eps will start back up April 6th so I can watch live while in Blackpool!

I'll start off by acknowledging that you're the bigger Who fan and know more on the topic.
With that, I felt Tennant's Who had amazing chemistry with Piper's Rose. Certainly my favorite Who/companion pairing. I know you're not alone in loving The Girl in the Fireplace but that is one of my least favorites. (There was some episode that had him bouncing out of flying taxi's that drove me more nuts.) And I love what they did with the Cybermen that season and felt that was the scariest they ever made them.

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)

You should check out the early Cybermen episodes (First/Second Doctor era). They're much, much creepier than they are now.
