I'm mixed on this. WAY too much guy ass shots. The freaky part was the basement scene with the daughter, the girl who hates smoking yet does drug, and that one guy. Way too much going on, though, and completely lost me at times. Def going to give it a few episodes but hope things start making sense by the 6th episode.

That was just...odd.
I was a little hung up on her being cool about getting it on with her husband* (OR WAS IT?!?! *cue organ*) decked out in a stranger's used fetish gear. Ewwww. Guess that's how she gets her jollies.
*Or, as the AV Club put, the black version of the Greendale Human Being.

The pilot was all over the place, but I kind of liked it. It wasn't scary for me, but I got hooked into some of the mysteries like the maid being young and old and the wacky neighbor and her special needs daughter.

I will write my comments before I start reading everyone's. I usually go to bed at 10 pm, since I wake up at 5 am, but decided to take a look at this show. Maybe the first 10 minutes, then the first half, and at the end watched the whole episode. Just couldn't stop watching. I think this is my first time watching an FX show "live". So I was kinda surprised by the language and skin shown, like I was watching a premium channel.
Anyway, I loved this show. It's pretty complex by itself, I don't know how much I care about the horror part right now, but the family is really interesting. Had a couple of cliches, but somehow they worked for me. I don't know if you have to be a horror fan to like this show, I don't think so, but I'll tell everyone I know to check it out.

I read all the comments, mixed reviews here too, it seems. Agree with the ones that loved it.
Oh, I forgot to mention, although I didn't get scared by the show, somehow I ended up having nightmares related to the show. Maybe it was too traumatic for me that:

As others have said, it was weird, but I liked it for the most part. The pilot managed to set up a lot of storylines and introduce a lot of people. Jessica Lange was great.
I already think that the guy in the gimp suit wasn't her husband and that the baby isn't his either. But I guess that was pretty obvious.
Also, I do worry about how this show will stay fresh over multiple seasons. At what point do you simply say, why the hell haven't you left this house yet? Haunted house movies that don't last nearly as long as a whole TV season often strain that. With as much weirdness as is already going on here (hell, the neighbors alone), I wonder how long until that question really starts getting brought up. I think it would be really cool, though I know it won't happen, if there is a different cast every season or two. The house kills off the current crop and then new owners are brought in, with the maid, neighbors and weird guy being constants.

The pilot was a mess. As many of you have said, it was just all over the place. I felt like I was watching a really long "previously on/on next week's episode" segment. The editing was terrible. I'm still intrigued by what the show may bring and will give it a couple more episodes, but as of now I'm not impressed.
She's a ghost. I wonder how long it will take them to realize the house isn't getting cleaned.

Too much was crammed into the initial episode (for the creepy factor) to have any sympathy for the main characters. It's a pilot so maybe the plot- lines can be devoted more individually from week to week now.
Hope so because there is some cool potential there.

Re: American Horror Story -- "Pilot" -- 10/5/2011 (10PM FX)
I guess with all the fairly negative reviews of the show, my expectations were lowered. I enjoyed the show and hope it gets some traction in the weeks ahead. I remember when True Blood first came out it also was panned by a lot of reviewers. Now, it's a critics darling even as it gets wackier as the seasons go on.
I too wonder how this could carry over from season to season as all the messed up things going on in the house would certainly leave a family wanting to move (unless they get killed first). Could it be they'll be a new "story" each season with different characters/plot?

5.2M viewers watched last night (counting the re-air)
1.6 in the 18-49 demo. Pretty solid start.

I watched it twice. Yeah, they throw a lot at you in the pilot -- but it doesn't feel entirely random on second glance. I look forward to seeing how it all plays out and discovering more about the Jessica Lange/Frances Conroy/evil teen backstories and how they're connected. It's obvious that the young man is some kind of demon, or at least possessed by one. I mean, he wrote "TAINT" on the wall. Edgy.
BTW, where was the whistling music during his fantasy sequence at the school taken from? It sounds familiar.

They also used music from Vertigo, another Bernard Herrman score, during the scene where the fire victim recounts killing his family.

Thanks, guys. I've never seen Twisted Nerve (where's the region 1 DVD?), so it must have been Kill Bill. I did notice the use of the Vertigo score toward the end.
