Primetime TV Ratings - 2011 - 2012 Season

As the creator of the previous thread is no longer with us (RIP Chew ) I've decided to go ahead and start up the ratings thread for the current season of primetime TV ratings. This includes broadcast and cable.

----------------------------------------------------------
Last Thursday 9/15/2011

Always Sunny In Philadelphia FX 10:00 PM 2.275M VIEWERS 1.4 (18-49)
ARCHER FX 10:32 PM 1.170M VIEWERS 0.7 (18 - 49)

----------------------------------------------------------

New Season. New Ratings.

CBS easily won the first night of the season as Two and Half Men scored nearly 28 million viewers to go along with its 10.3 adults 18-49 rating (leading not only the night, but any scripted show in the 2010-11 season by a wide margin).

Things were much gloomier for NBC. The Sing Off didn't crack a 2.0 rating and the premiere of The Playboy Club managed only a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating. By comparison, last season's premiere of the now cancelled Chase scored a 2.5 adults 18-49 rating in the preliminary numbers. More analysis coming, but the table of data is below:

Late-night results are below the primetime data.

Broadcast primetime ratings for Monday, September 19, 2011:

<colgroup> <col style="width: 39pt;" width="52" /> <col style="width: 40pt;" width="53" /> <col style="width: 210pt;" width="280" /> <col style="width: 45pt;" width="60" /> <col style="width: 41pt;" width="55" /></colgroup>
Time Net Show 18-49 Rating Viewers (Millions)
8:00 CBS How I Met Your Mother (Season Premiere) 4.7/13 11.26
ABC Dancing with the Stars (Season Premiere) 3.9/10 18.41
NBC The Sing-Off (Season Premiere 1.9/5 5.66
FOX Hell's Kitchen (Season Finale) 2.5/7 5.85
CW H8R (R) 0.5/1 1.20
8:30 CBS How I Met Your Mother 5.1/13 12.24
9:00 CBS Two and a Half Men (Season Premiere) 10.3/24 27.76
ABC Dancing with the Stars (Season Premiere) 3.9/9 18.72
FOX Hell's Kitchen (Season Finale) 2.6/6 5.88
NBC The Sing-Off (Season Premiere 1.8/4 4.74
CW Ringer (R) 0.4/1 1.01
9:30 CBS 2 Broke Girls (Series Premiere) 7.0/16 19.15
10:00 CBS Hawaii Five-0 (Season Premiere) 3.4/8 12.00
ABC Castle (Season Premiere) 3.3/8 13.60
NBC The Playboy Club (Series Premiere) 1.6/4 5.01
Half Hours
10:00 CBS Hawaii Five-0 (Season Premiere) 3.7/9 12.57
ABC Castle (Season Premiere) 3.4/8 14.35
NBC The Playboy Club (Series Premiere) 1.7/4 5.28
10:30 ABC Castle (Season Premiere) 3.1/8 12.86
CBS Hawaii Five-0 (Season Premiere) 3.1/8 11.42
NBC The Playboy Club (Series Premiere) 1.6/4 5.01

How I Met Your Mother pulled Two and a Half Men ratings last night, Two and a Half Men pulled ridiculous ratings last night. 2 Broke Girls will probably be the biggest New Series debut of any this year.

Those numbers for Two and a Half Men are insane. Not even the NFL pulls those kind of numbers regularly.

Of course, they'll fall off next week. But CBS did get a lot of eyeballs to watch 2 Broke Girls.

The demos for H50 and Castle were solid. Don't believe the overhyped trade headlines saying the ratings are down. These procedurals go through different spurts during the course of a season. IIRC H50 was actually slightly below 3.0 towards the end of last season.

Hawaii Five-0 was down premiere to premiere, it's sort of irrelevant since series debuts tend to score better then decline.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - 2011 - 2012 Season

For Tuesday, September 20th, 2011 (yanked from TVbytheNumbers.com)

<thead> </thead>
Scoreboard FOX CBS ABC NBC Uni CW
Adults 18-49: Rating/Share 3.9/10 3.6/9 2.4/6 2.2/6 1.8/5 0.8/2
Adults 18-34: Rating/Share 4.3/13 2.0/6 1.6/5 1.8/5 1.9/6 0.9/3
Total Viewers (million) 8.694 16.739 11.645 5.839 3.901 1.762

Update: ah, premiere week where the networks order special time-zone adjusted runs! Fox ordered one and based on that New Girl was up a tenth to a 4.8 adults 18-49 rating and Glee rose 0.2 to a 4.0 adults 18-49 rating. Those numbers will likely be identical in the national finals we'll see this afternoon.

Fox won the second night of the season with the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49, and CBS took top honors with total viewers. Glee premiered down 32% from last season's premiere to a 3.8 adults 18-49 ratings. But Fox isn't crying yet because New Girl debuted to a 4.7 adults 18-49 rating and eclipsed last season's 9p premiere of Raising Hope when Glee was stronger. Unforgettable didn't crack a 3.0, but premiered solidly with a 2.9 adults 18-49 rating and nearly 14 million viewers and was on par with the second hour of NCIS: LA that CBS aired at 10pm a year ago. CBS was up across-the-board from last year's Tuesday premieres when it ran an episode of NCIS and two hours of NCIS: LA. NCIS bettered Glee with adults 18-49 (though Glee still won out with adults 18-34).

Raising Hope premiered to a 3.1 adults 18-49 rating, identical to last year's preliminary rating when it followed Glee. Against more 10pm competition, Parenthood didn't suffer much, down only a tenth from last year's premiere. Against more competition,

Bad news for ABC though, DWTS results fell 36% versus last year to a 2.8 adults 18-49 rating. Body Of Proof seemed solid (for a 10pm scripted drama on ABC, that is) but was down 26% from its late March premiere to a 2.3 adults 18-49 rating. Body Of Proof was also up 10% versus its May finale.

NBC's The Biggest Loser fell 21% from last fall's premiere to a 2.3 adults 18-49 rating, but versus more competition, Parenthood slipped only 5% from last week's premiere to a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating. CW's Ringer fell 25% with adults 18-49 to a 0.9 rating in its second week, and was down 19% to a 1.3 rating with CW's target women 18-34 audience.

Late-night ratings are below the primetime data.

Broadcast primetime ratings for Tuesday, September 20, 2011:

Time Net Show 18-49 Rating Viewers (Millions)
8:00 CBS NCIS (Season Premiere) 4.2/12 19.55
FOX Glee (Season Premiere) 3.8/11 8.91
NBC The Biggest Loser (Season Premiere) 2.2/6 6.09
ABC Dancing with the Stars: Meet the Cast 2.0/6 10.74
CW 90210 0.7/2 1.56
9:00 FOX New Girl (Series Premiere) 4.7/12 10.08
CBS NCIS: Los Angeles (Season Premiere) 3.6/9 16.69
ABC Dancing with the Stars Results 2.8/7 14.54
NBC The Biggest Loser (Season Premiere) 2.4/6 6.17
CW Ringer 0.9/2 1.96
9:30 FOX Raising Hope (Season Premiere) 3.1/8 6.87
10:00 CBS Unforgettable (Series Premiere) 2.9/8 13.98
ABC Body Of Proof (Season Premiere) 2.3/6 9.65
NBC Parenthood 2.1/6 5.26

Ho-hum start for Glee, strong debut for New Girl, good demo score for Raising Hope.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - 2011 - 2012 Season

Looks likes Castle's premier numbers are solidly up on the average or highs from previous seasons. I hope it can keep up the momentum, even if the figures fall some. However, I would be happy to see the show close up after 5 or 6 seasons. I'd hate to see it overstay it's welcome and become cliche.

From last week it looks like The Vampire Diaries pulled in 3.1M viewers. It hasn't pulled those figures since the middle of last season and then it fell under 3M, including the finale that was at 2.86M. I hope it can retain some of the viewers and make a strong season. Interestingly, the Secret Circle pulled in 3.0M, but I'd expect that to fall under 3M this week.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - 2011 - 2012 Season

Can somebody explain the ratings column to me? Why do different programs have different x/y figures? The figures even change within a network across hours. Or is that the share?

This video indicates the rating is the coverage percentage.

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-UqKLSNmvEU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

So Glee the ~8M watching Glee represented 11% of viewers across OTA/Cable/Satellite that receive a Fox station?

Great numbers for NCIS, NCIS: LA (wonder when they'll overextend themselves like CSI and make NCIS: Dallas or w/e) and New Girl. Will have to see what Unforgettable gets next week.

Scoreboard FOX ABC CBS NBC Uni CW
Adults 18-49: Rating/Share 4.2/12 4.1/11 3.5/9 1.8/5 1.7/4 0.6/2
Adults 18-34: Rating/Share 3.6/11 3.4/11 2.1/7 1.4/4 1.7/5 0.7/2
Total Viewers (million) 12.141 11.359 12.338 6.616 3.742 1.321

Update: early finals alert, in time-zone adjusted fast national numbers, The X Factor was adjusted up 0.2 with adults 18-49 to a 4.4 rating and 12.5 million viewers.

Fox eked out a win on the night with adults 18-49, but there might be more smiles at ABC and CBS. The X Factor's 4.2 adults 18-49 rating and 12.14 million viewers was nowhere close to Idol and well short of Modern Family's 6.0 adults 18-49 rating and 14.3 million viewers. A few have e-mailed to say the comparisons between X Factor and Idol are unfair, and while that is perhaps true, those comparisons were inevitable with Simon, Paula and a lot of promotion.

At 8pm, X Factor led, but Survivor held up with a 3.1 adults 18-49 rating and ABC's The Middle debuted to a 3.0 adults 18-49 rating, up 11% from last fall's premiere. As even NBC surely expected, its new comedies were down big from last week's premieres following America's Got Talent. Both shows fell 38% with adults 18-49, but Up All Night held up pretty well all things considered with a 2.3 adults 18-49 rating but Free Agents fell to a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating

At 9pm the aforementioned Modern Family, which was up 18% vs. last fall's half-hour premiere comfortably led The X Factor, but props to the somewhat unheralded Criminal Minds which debuted with a 4.1 adults 18-49 rating. Harry's Law got off to a (s)low start and was pounded into dust by the 9pm competition with a 1.2 adults 18-49 rating.

ABC's Revenge got off to a nice start, winning the 10pm hour with a 3.4 adults 18-49 rating and and 10.15 million viewers, 127% better than the premiere of The Whole Truth a year ago. Revenge bettered Ted Danson's debut on CSI's 3.1 adults 18-49 rating, but CSI won the hour in total viewers with 12.59 million. The Stabler-less Law & Order: SVU was last at 10pm with a 2.3 adults 18-49 and 7.6 million viewers.

More coming, check back

My explanations usually suck but here goes --

The 18-49 rating/share:

First number is rating, second number is share. This applies only to individuals in the 18 - 49 range (key demo for advertisers)

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Rating = % watching based on # of homes that own a TV
Share = % watching based on # of people watching TV last night

So for instance, 4.0/12 more or less means:
4% of all tv watching 18 - 49 year olds were watching X-Factor last night.
12% of all people age 18 - 49 that were watching TV last night at 8:00 PM were watching the X-Factor.

Some might think that X Factor's ratings are a disappointment. But I recall FOX mentioning that if it gets half American Idol's viewers, they would be happy.

I mean your trying to sell a brand new singing competition product to American viewers and the only real selling point right now is the Paula-Simon reunion.

American Idol already has an 11 year head start.

Yeah Free Agents isn't going to survive at 8:30pm losing half of it's lead-in.

I watched the Pilot a few days ago and didn't laugh once. Hank Azaria is a bad lead for a comedy.

Revenge looks like it's gonna be around for awhile. Solid 18-49 numbers which is all that advertisers really care about.

CSI is finally showing its age.

Free Agents is DOA. If it was on Fox they would already have announced its cancellation.

It's about average for CSI and given its on another night and an hour later, it's not too bad. If anything, SVU is showing its age... But very good numbers for Modern Family and Criminal Minds.

The CW actually ordered an extra episode this season (23). So don't worry it has alot of chances to get better numbers.

Face it, the DVR is killing live viewership. Hardly anyone is watching these expensive scripted shows live anymore and shows like Nikita, especially being on the CW, are suffering for it.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - 2011 - 2012 Season

Seems like the Fringe numbers are good and bad. TVBTN says:
Fringe returned with a 1.5 adults 18-49 rating, down 21% from its Friday premiere last winter, but up 25% from its season finale. For those asking "is that good" my guess is that it's not great, or even particularly good, but is enough, at least for now, to be in the "keep hope alive!" range.
I don't expect, nor want, Fringe to go 7 seasons, but I feel like 5 would be appropriate. I believe that's what the producers said back in the beginning. Either way, if this is the last season I'd really like them to be able to tie everything up as necessary.
