Pretty sure he was extremely obese in the books, And that's what made him so shocking to the characters in the books, because you're right it's probably not common, besides just his general wussiness.

In the books, he was fat enough that the Night Watch armorer had to make him a special suit of armor, so definitely fatter than "normal" fat.

For those that have read the books, this site is pretty funny/interesting, TV tropes and idioms:

Who did Stark say the Blacksmith's apprentice was the bastard son of?

King Robert. The book had a few extra lines explaining how he could see the resemblance right away.

There was a brief glimpse of snow during the camp out scene in episode I think 2.

As someone who avoids spoilers I was able to get through the thread pretty quickly. I don't know if I have ever seen more spoiler tags than episode discussion until now.

Some of the spoiler stuff definitely gets muddled. such as the HBO viewers guide.

Does anyone else find it odd that they switched the timeline on the meeting with Tyrion and Catlyn in the pub and the tournament? I'm guessing it was just so the episode could end with a dramatic moment. Although, they could have also ended it with that guy (I can't remember his name from the book) getting killed by Gregor while jousting.

See: last episode thread (and others, I guess) for reasons why. I considered just talking in all spoilers this time, to be extra safe and not offend anyone because I accidentally mentioned something totally unimportant that the show implied but didn't directly address.

Spoiler:
But that'd be silly!

But yeah, everyone's being overly cautious now, probably to the detriment of general discussion. Especially considering that nothing of any substance has been spoiled in any of these threads (except for the one troll who came in and posted something major, but that doesn't really apply to what we're talking about).

Re: Game of Thrones -- "Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things" -- 5/08/11

My thoughts

Spoiler:

I was surprised they had Littlefinger tell the Hound's story to Sansa. From the books I remember it being one of the first confrontations between Sansa and the Hound, and he uses it to break Sansa out of her fantasies about noble knights (Gregor being a knight). Of course my memory isn't always the most trustworthy.

I thought tonight was it for the tournament, but are they extending it out through the next episode? The amount they showed so far left out a lot.

They finally show ghost, I wish they had shown more of him in previous episodes even if just in the background during more scenes.

I thought they did a great job with Sam, exactly like I pictured him in the books. I never got the impression that he was even fatter in the books, as it seems everyone else did.

I think they should have had Littlefinger tell Sansa the story about......

Spoiler:
The Mountain killing Rhaegars wife and children

.....and let the Hound tell his own story later on.

I'm wondering if they had littlefingers
Spoiler:
tell the story, because they won't be focusing on the whole Sandor/Sansa angle? Or at least won't key in on it? Instead they are keying in the Littlefingers/Sansa story

I hope not though.

I'm finding this show very difficult to follow. I think you kind of need to know the books to understand what on earth is going on. It's pretty to look at, though.

Re: Game of Thrones -- "Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things" -- 5/08/11

Keep in mind that (Book 3 spoilers)
Spoiler:
Littlefinger sorta ends up in a close relationship with Sansa, leaving King's Landing with her. There's also a weird sexual thing going on there, as far as his viewing her as a sort of mini-Catelyn.

None of this applies to the Hound. I'd argue that the Littlefinger/Sansa relationship is more important than the Hound/Sansa relationship, despite the "shipper" fantasies.

Although, I still haven't read the 4th book, so my argument might be incomplete.

I wouldn't say that is entirely accurate. My wife is a GoT newbie, and she has pretty much caught herself up to where she needs too.

Re: Game of Thrones -- "Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things" -- 5/08/11

I think I'll just post this as a reply every time there's discussion of differences, what hasn't happened yet etc.

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/tv-talk/590...rs-thread.html

A thread for those of us who want to freely discuss the series, comparisons to the books, future events, events foreshadowed, events left out, etc.

Warning to those who haven't read the books. Any posts below this one are open season. If you don't want to find out what happens later (in this book or subsequent books), you're probably better off in the weekly threads.

Hopefully this will remedy the situation in the main thread where there are two very different groups of people watching this, and wanting different things in the discussion.

EDIT: To clarify the purpose of this thread (since I'm getting some flak)

This thread is for those who who know this world and are up to speed with what GRRM has released. Others are welcome to participate, but they should be aware that anything in the first four books is fair game. When Dance comes out this summer, we'll spoilerize info from that. As another poster noted, Book four came out almost six years ago. Those who want to read it, for the most part, probably have.
If the thread has to be cluttered up by spoiler tags, it might as well be cluttered up by reminders too.

Now we're complaining about too many spoiler tags in the thread?

What did you think of the episode?

Re: Game of Thrones -- "Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things" -- 5/08/11

I think I'd like to discuss it without wading through spoiler tags.

Book discussion, spoilered or not, belongs in the other thread IMO.

Perhaps we need two separate weekly threads since the spoiler thread is already on page 2.
