Re: Game of Thrones -- "Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things" -- 5/08/11

I've been watching every episode twice, have only watched this one once so far but it might be my favorite to this point. Just disappointed more of the tourney wasn't shown(assuming there will be more of it next week though) and wished the Hound had told Sansa the story. Oh and I also always thought it was Gendry with the J sound. Overall my only real disappointments with the show are some that others have, don't do well conveying the passage of time, and I lack of a sense of how big some things are, like King's Landing and the Dothraki Horde. I'm sure it's a budget thing as much as anything else, but a few wide, sweeping, epic shots would be nice. They've done it on other shows like Lost so figure they could manage it on GoT.

The tournament was really off scale. There are weekend illegal street drag races that draw bigger crowds. I did not feel that the tournament would have put too much of a drain on the royal bank. Loved the fleshing out of back stories on the Turd King's history, the hound and Theon. They did mess up on the Hound's scarring, he should have no beard on his right side from burns; the full beard hides how bad he should look.

It was nice to finally see evidence that the fearsome Dothraki horde is made up of more than 5 people on horseback.

In regards to Tyrion and Theon talking before Tyrion left

Spoiler:
Did I miss that in the books? Or was that something slipped in by the producers? If so, it was a great way to get a little back story on theon.

Also regarding The Hound and Gregor

Spoiler:
Any thoughts on why they had littlefish tell the story rather than Hound?

May I just say again that the actor that they picked for Samwell Tarly was perfect. That was perfect casting

Samwell was much fatter in the books but not a lot of uber-fattie actors I suppose.

It's one of those fantasy relationship things that people with far too much time on their hands ("shippers") write about on the internet. SANsa + SANdor = Sansan. Ugh...I feel a little sick just writing about it.

Yep, I thought he looked great (and I criticized that casting when it was first announced).

Yeah but what is that about? Its almost like they are shipping or whatnot like Bennifer or some crap. I don't see that at all.

It took me so long to figure out what people meant when they talked about "ships".

I watched this last night at a friend's house and it was my first episode -- needless to say I'm a bit lost at this point.

Not too much has happened yet. You would be fine just from watching re-caps of the first three episodes. Or read the first 300 pages in the book. That's about where they're at after yesterdays episode.

There was a nice little added detail for Viserys in this episode that I noticed but didn't connect to anything significant until someone at WiC.net pointed it out:
Spoiler:
When the girl dripped candle wax on him, he let out an "ow!" Blood of the Dragon indeed; can't even handle a little hot wax. Sets up a nice contrast with Dany's...er....high tolerance for heat later on.

I never pictured Samwell as super fat, just rotund and soft. Hell how fat can you actually get in that time/universe? King Robert is smaller than Sam with a sense of scale

Maybe Tori Amos could be cast if they ever show Roz. Or Julianne Moore.
Or you could just picture the actress we've already seen. Roz was the one talking to Tyrion in the first episode.
