Lost *Series Premiere* - 09/22/04

Can't find the 24 one, but I actually didn't care for that pilot due almost entirely to the terrible acting.

In fairness, he joined DVDTalk in May :)

You guys are right about the escalators... I read that as elevators. Oops.

My guess, time travel show
The people being held in Alaskan prison are either time travellers or know about it.
The people who killed pilot's wife are time travellers messing with time line
The reason there was no record of guy on cruise ship in computer, etc.-time line had been altered. He was somehow outside the new timeline.
Some good guy time travellers opened time portal and transported plane to different time.
Flashback format of show allows for showing of alternate versions of same scenr as timeline is changed.

The guy from cuise ship who's girlfriend disappeared, was on plane, etc. for whatever reason will remember all the changes as timelines are altered. Nobody else will.

rumors are that the "event" is similar to the show
Spoiler:
the 4400 where people come here from the future.

I like how people still expect Transformers level computer graphics on TV. I expect my TV shows to have corney special effects, it adds to the fun.

Oh, we can't tell anyone about.... THE EVENT.

When... THE EVENT happens.

etc. etc. etc.

Thanks for finding this. I only read through about the first 4 pages...yeah it was pretty much universally positive. The only complaints were the length of it and bitching about The Bachelor...and some minor complaints about the implausibility of some things that happened. Little did people know that things would only get more implausible as the show went on.

I do wonder if at least some people were high on it simply because they were JJ Abrams fanboys and they WANTED to like it. For many people that guy can do no wrong. That said, Lost, along with 24 was a once in a million show. Even though The Event is being compared to both of those shows and I can definitely see the similarities, I think it's very unfair to compare a brand new show to 2 of the most popular and innovative shows of the last decade. For every Lost or 24 there are a hundred seemingly promising shows that sink like the Titanic.

Re: The Event -- New Series -- "Pilot" -- 09/20/10

The Lost pilot was a dramatically engaging piece of television with excellent writing, acting, and production values where a situation (plane crash on a seemingly deserted island) was presented and characters reacted to it.

The pilot for The Event was a dramatically inert piece of crap where characters talk in circles, omit crucial information THAT THEY WOULD KNOW from their dialogue because mystery. It also mistakes time-jumps for a narrative structure.

I liked it. Hopefully, it doesn't go crappy like Lost did.

I just hope they explain how all these guns found their way onto a plane.

And Taylor Cole.

Re: The Event -- New Series -- "Pilot" -- 09/20/10

I thought it was alright - I'm certainly willing to give it a shot for a few weeks, mostly because I like Jason Ritter (and Sarah Roemer is hot). I've heard there will be less jumping around in future eps which should really help the situation IMO. I don't think it is fair to compare this to the LOST pilot at this point, especially since that was a 2 hour deal. I must say though, I'm not sure who these detainee's are, but when they asked "how many of them are there?"(97) I was fully expecting the answer to be "4400".

Ah..so "everyone running around asking" was two people in one conversation.

So it was like every other episode of Lost after the first.

How is that relevant? We're talking about pilots.

I don't know, you're talking about stuff that didn't happen so I guess I assumed everything was fair game. ;)

And you can not like time jumps, but that doesn't make it a non story telling device.

Well, it's been less than 24 hours and I've already forgotten just about everything in this show (characters and plots) except the plane disappearing. Not a good sign...

11.2 mil viewers last night. Off to a good start, ratings wise. We'll just have to see how long that keeps up.

I think as long as this keeps 8 million viewers in the next few week NBC will order a full season.

Wow, I'm kind of surprised at the harsh criticism. I liked it and will keep watching it right up until it gets cancelled... I don't think Lost will be replicated again, at least for quite a while.

The production values is the biggest drawback for me. Lost had it... that and an excellent score to go with an excellent cast. The man-child that was supposed to propose to the girl was so wrongly cast it's impossible to believe he could be a hero of any sort - let alone land that hot chick. I thought he was some 19 year old tool who was trying to grow his first mustache.

That said, I'll give this show a chance.

superfro 09-21-10 12:07 PM

Re: The Event -- New Series -- "Pilot" -- 09/20/10

My only issue with the comparison to the production value here vs. Lost is that it only holds true (IMO) for the pilot. Outside of that opening episode most of the special effects involving planes, the smoke, etc. looked pretty damn shitty. It's obvious they funneled a ton of money into the big opening shots of Lost, but as the series progressed the stuff got worse looking and about on par with what I saw in the show last night. (Special effects wise, not sets.)

Blair Underwood not having a piece of cake isnt the Event.....

i think the observation above is a great way of looking at it...

So you've never seen a seemingly uber douche with a hot girl before? I see it all the time. As I go through life, I'm completely blown away by some of the complete tools that some hot chicks go out with. I'm sure some people say the same thing about some of the girls I've been lucky enough to score with. I'm sure they look at me and say "how did that douche bag land that hot chick"

Re: The Event -- New Series -- "Pilot" -- 09/20/10

That uber douche planned a romantic getaway to propose to his girlfriend, asked his girlfriend's father for his blessing to marry her, jumped off a cliff to save a girl from drowning, recoiled when said girl later started getting a little too friendly, and hopped onto a plane he knew was going to plow into the ground. Yeah, what a tool.
