Maybe it's just me, but I sort of felt like I wasted an hour. Almost everything in the pilot seemed to have been shown in the previews. I think if you only saw those you'd be caught up.

I can't believe the show didn't explain the big thing referenced to in the title of the show in it's pilot episode. Pure shit.

I thought I was jaded, but you guys are hardcore.

Note to writers: There's a difference between a mystery and having people sit around discussing what's going on without actually explaining what's going on.

But what else should we expect from Wong.

Because if they tried to have a limo outrun a crashing plane the audience would tune out

Spoiler:
All will be revealed

The plane crashed on an island and the survivors will become "candidates" to replace some dude name Jacob.

P.S. This show is total crap.

Between the time jumping, bad CGI=big bag of suck. Come on now this is the best they could do? This show will not last. Reminds me of either a TV movie or something on scifi channel.

The limo doesn't have to outrun the plane. It just needs to get on a road that runs perpendicular to the plane's path. Jumbo jets aren't as manueverable as cars even when they aren't in a crash dive.

Plus, you know, having agents take the other vehicles from the motorcade and scattering so the pilot doesn't know which one to target.

Does anybody remember the comments on this board after the pilot episode of Lost?

Anyway, I really don't get all the negativity. What did you guys really expect?

I think the "Lost meets 24" comparisons are totally accurate. Both of those shows were complete and utter nonsense but they were damn entertaining.

Sure, the 23 minutes ago, 11 hours ago, 8 days ago thing was kind of annoying at the start, but that was a minor quibble. I thought it was a fun show and I'm hoping the answers are slowly revealed. Do we really need to know the answer to everything in the pilot episode? I'll be there with bells on next Monday. Beats most of the other crap that's on tv right now.

Having your characters run around asking "what's the mystery?" doesn't mean you've written a mystery show. What a piece of shit.

I chalk most of it on the fact that everyone has been burned so much on shows that take this story style since Lost's success. That being said, I watched multiple episodes of things like Flash Forward, Missing Persons, etc. and the key for me with this show is it doesn't feel like it's trying anywhere near as hard as those shows were. This from the jump seems much more pinpointed. That keeps me hopeful that they have some reigns over too much branching out. Of course it could still fall apart after the fact, but the vilification based on episode one of a mystery style show, at least with the way I thought they handled this one, is a bit sad.

 When did this even happen? Nobody was running around asking about any mystery. At this point aren't there only a handful of folks in the show that even know there was an "EVENT"? Yet everyone was running around asking people about it? What?

Felt a LOT like FlashForward to me (which had a great pilot), but more intense. I enjoyed it and thought the final 5 minutes redeemed it overall. Gave it a lot more intrigue.

I agree though that after feeling a bit burned with LOST, FlashForward, etc, this was hard to take sometimes...especially the time jumping. I mean, seriously, if they had flashed one more "17 minutes earlier" up on the screen, I think I'd have screamed.

I'm also guessing we're going to get more of these same scenes in episodes to come given that they never let us see how the boyfriend knew "Mike" was flying the plane.

Exactly. I loved Lost's pilot.

This show on the other hand, not so much.

Your Facebook review of this show made me laugh.

My wife is mad at me for ripping on this show. But I'm sucker enough that I'm going to keep watching.

I think the "Lost meets 24" comparisons are totally accurate. Both of those shows were complete and utter nonsense but they were damn entertaining.

Here's the difference -- on Lost, the characters didn't know any more about the island than the audience. They were always discovering things, meeting people who knew just a little bit of what's going on. Even when they encountered someone like Richard or Jacob who knew a lot more, the castaways didn't have any power to make them talk. None of that applies to The Event.

One of the big mysteries was "What is the President going to reveal?" But the President is a main character. We got to see the decision making process behind his going public. The only reason we don't know what the revelation was going to be is because the writers wrote elliptical dialogue. The scene where the President kept talking about the "detainees" was so forced -- there was no reason for him not to say, "the aliens" or "the time travelers" or whatever. Then we have that woman who looks like a bloated Mary McDonnell and clearly knows most of the big secrets. And she's already in custody -- the government can just bring in the tittie-wringer to make her talk. It's like if 24 began with the mastermind already in custody.

If the entire episode had been about the guy on the boat, culminating in his fiancee disappearing and her parents being murdered, that would've worked much better, because then we would've been followng the mystery from the POV of someone who has to find out what's going on. But then, that would've made it obvious how thread-bare the plot is -- it's something that the Sci-Fi channel and the old UPN did a million times.

So you're out then? You know...since you have it all figured out. ;)

IMO we have far too little information to make the claims you are about the character relationships. It's easy to draw the distinction to different structure in Lost because you're basing it on 6 season of knowledge, and even at the end of those season they still couldn't and wouldn't provide most answers or explanations. (I'm talking about the characters to one another, not the creators. Even if it applies.)

Obviously Sean is playing the role closest to the viewer and thus has the most lack of information. Does he not apply to the scenario of your castaways?

Short version: Mysterious People kidnap the family of an airline pilot to force him to crash a jet into the President's house.* Mysterious space warp saves the President. Were the Mysterious People trying to kill the president, or were they trying to force the people/aliens responsible for the warp into revealing themselves? By the end of the season, all may or may not be revealed!

Also, I assume we'll get some explanation of why the older daughter was not just kidnapped, but kidnapped in a way to make it seem like she was never there, as well as how Jason Ritter got from "OMG! My girlfriend is missing! ON A BOAT!" to "Dad, you don't have to do this!!!!!1!!!!!eleventyone!!!"

* Too soon? Apparently nine years is enough to turn a national tragedy into fodder for a popcorn TV show.

Definitely all over the place. I'll likely tune in next week to see what happens (although I don't really care).
