Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
Did any of you guys actually watch the Conan joke? Or do you actually watch Conan? I caught it on my DVR today.
It was a 20 second bit. Conan finished the joke by staring into the camera and giving the audience a few seconds to applaud. He fits in a few 'snarky' edgy jokes every night. It could have just as well ended in a quick jab at Russia's anti-gay laws. Or fat people. |

Seriously? It's a pretty clear connection what Dave is getting at, I'm not sure how much clearer it could be unless you know none of their personal history. I'm pretty sure he's speaking to his experience as well as to what happened with Jay and Conan. Also why is it such a big deal to you if Conan maybe is a bit bitter? He has a right to be in the first place, but really while he may slightly be he doesn't harp on that issue constantly or anything.

Well the way your posts read make it seem like you have some issue with the fact that Conan might be a bit bitter or upset. I was just trying to unerstand why you have some beef with that when he has a pretty legitmate reason to be somewhat bitter.

People may not remember this, but when it was announced that Jay Leno was going to keep doing an NBC talk show after Conan took over The Tonight Show, comedians predicted that Jay was just waiting to take Tonight back. Norm MacDonald talked about it to Conan on Late Night. Unless Jimmy Fallon actually physically dies soon, I don't think anyone seriously believes that there is a chance in hell of Leno coming back again to host The Tonight Show. |

Do you really think that NBC's defense in a lawsuit could be: "Yes, we have a legally binding contract with Mr. Leno, but he said he doesn't care about these things, so that makes it invalid"?
I'm just saying that for someone who went out of his way to brag about not caring about contracts or making a lot of money, he certainly seemed to care a lot about enforcing contracts and making lots of money. |

No. I'm not saying that it would be a valid defense.

Letterman finally gets to be the No. 1 late night talk show now that Leno is out of the way. Good for him.
I wouldn't be totally shocked if Fallon fell to No. 3 behind Letterman & Kimmel in the 11:35 time slot. |

Fallon will do better than Kimmel since Kimmel is horrible.
I don't think the Leno faithful will flock to Letterman and they might just tune out completely. |

I hope he does Ian Rubbish. I might actually watch The Tonight Show if he does.

Conan needs to get deported.

Jack Parr needed to be sodomized by bears.
I should have posted this on Feb. 21 for added relevance. |

Bah. Kimmel and Conan are the best.
Kimmel seems to have become sociable friends with all of A-list Hollywood. |
Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
I find Conan barely watchable these days. He still has the nice, easygoing personality that works in interviews, but the staff writing jokes for him has greatly declined in quality over the years since his prime on NBC. You can tell the staff writing jokes has gotten much younger. He also seems to have gotten more blatantly liberal, I guess in an attempt to capture some of Jon Stewart's audience.
I really thought he was the true heir at one time to Johnny Carson but I think the situation at NBC permanently damaged him. |
Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
I think Fallon has potential and is what is needed for modern late night. Leno's time had passed a while back, and I think Letterman's schtick is getting old. Don't get me wrong, he too was great and IMO did more to revolutionize late night than Carson, but the time for people like him is passing.

The smaller budget and less stress on appealing to everyone has allowed him to be who he wants. |

I wonder if The Roots are changing the theme from "Here I Come" to something else

Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)
Fallon's first two jokes were about Leno not going away. What a jaded bastard!

I still miss TV Funhouse on SNL. Conan could do far worse than to hire the crap out of Smigel to save his brand/show. Like others were saying, the TBS skits/monologue are almost unwatchable. But for somebody who had such success in so many different things with so many different concepts, it's illogical that Smigel by and large doesn't exist anymore in Hollywood/mainstream entertainment. |

That was pretty good, WikiBear seems like something fun that they could keep around.
