Entire ‘Tonight Show’ Staff Laid Off as Jimmy Fallon Moves Show From Burbank to NYC

NBCUniversal plans to lay off the entire “Tonight Show” staff — all 164 Burbank employees — when the late-night talk show moves from California to New York City next month, TheWrap has learned.

NBCUniversal notified the California Employment Development Department last month that it will eliminate the positions, a company spokesperson told TheWrap. Layoffs will begin on Feb. 14 and be staggered through April 4.

This not an anti-Leno post, but didn't he say in some interview that he was leaving The Tonight Show before his contract was up, with the condition that all the staff continue to be paid as if he worked until the end.

I read that Fallon is bringing his entire staff w him. i wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being the same show just an hour earlier.

Fallon isn't moving to LA. I don't even think he is moving to a new studio at 30 Rock.

Did Conan's staff (other than the writers and on-air talent) go with him to TBS? I can't remember.

Jay's agreeing to both the 10pm show and the return to the Tonight Show had a lot to do with loyalty towards his workers. I still find it hard to believe many think he's a jerk. I can understand if you don't think he's funny, but I'd work for Jay Leno any day of the week over some of these other nighttime hosts (Letterman, in particular, is reportedly aloof and difficult).

.

Yup. Nearly everyone came with him. I think that was part of the deal he struck with TBS.

Letterman has loads of people working for him now that started working for him in the 1980s at NBC. I actually think it has been a detriment to his show that he values loyalty over what could be gained creatively by shaking things up behind the scenes. I bet most people would gladly put up with a boss who can be a prickly dick sometimes, if he is going to give them a good job for the rest of their working years.

According to this story from last August the staff was told they would be ending the show Feb 6 but would continue to be paid until this September. The new report doesn't really contradict that since they will likely get severance pay for the 6 months left on the contract.

:p Nah, I sympathized with Conan over what went down, and was he was justified in being pissed for a while...but good lord, move on. It can't be healthy to keep beating that dead horse.

It's a joke. Conan and other talk show hosts poke fun of tons of other people all the time, mostly for things that didn't personally affect them. Should Leno have been told to "move on" before making 4,600 jokes about Bill Clinton?

He comes across as bitter about it yet to me, that's all. I could very well be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

Directly after that joke and during the audience laughter Conan said, "I allowed myself one and it was a good one."

I could have used more!

Conan does monologues four times a week. I think he had room to squeeze in a joke here and there.

It's not desperate, like Jay holding onto OJ and Lewinsky jokes for [what felt like] ten years.

I wouldn't. He has a budget, has total control, and seems to only require his built in audience (instead of worrying about how to pander to wider crowds without betraying the art).

Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)

If Conan joked and talked about it constantly, I could see calling him bitter. I don't see how a single joke about the situation given the appropriate timing would come off that way.

pinata242 02-07-14 01:44 PM

Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)

Why didn't we call Letterman bitter for a similar joke a few posts prior?
