Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?

Couldn't the lawyers work it so that FOX can pay Conan in some sort of delayed trust or as an "entertainment consultant"? OR a six year contract with a final lump payment?

Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?

How about door #4:

Take the NBC salary and make your own online unrated show on perhaps a weekly basis. Only have cool guests. Get Norm MacDonald to co-host. First six months, show is free to everyone. $2 a month after that.

Does NBC understand that they can't unring the bell? People are not going to flock back to Jay Leno.

Morons.

Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?

Leno at 10pm officially canceled: http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/nb...e-a-done-deal/.

They sound so freaking stupid saying that it met expectations but ran into problems with the affiliates. If it met expectations how dumb do you have to be to produce expected results and still fail?

Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?

Thank God. This season is pretty much a washout for the 10pm timeslot as they barely have enough stuff to fill it with. I hope they spend the spring/summer developing and promoting some good 1 hour dramas for the 10pm timeslot for next Fall.

Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?

Didn't everyone predict this to happen anyway?

I'm just curious what's going to happen in the long run here. I don't think NBC would bump Tonight Show to midnight. That's foolish. I see Conan walking first.

Kevin McKidd has a very stable gig with Grey's. Don't think he will ever want to sign up for an NBC project again.

Yeah, but not so soon. It didn't make financial sense to dump Leno so quickly (10pm slot). I mean, shit, you know how much money this will cost NBC? The history that is being written today. Wow.

Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?

Yeah isn't there some kind of monstrosity of a penalty if NBC cans the show?

BTW, someone posted on another site that Friday Night Lights NBC airings could begin March 1st now instead of Summer.

Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?

Some good news from this (personally, it's all good news for me. That means 5 more shows and 5 more chances for Season 4 of Chuck):

FNL is probably set to come back in March.
Chuck S4 smells like a lock (it's not a 10pm show, and NBC is developing a lot of 10pm shows)
Community and Parks and Rec are also a lock. Only 30 minute pilot looking good is Adam Carolla's (and it could share time with either of the above).
Heroes...well, still likely a lock. I can see them doing a shortened, final, 13 episode season for Syndication and to make some of their new pilots even better

Oh....NBC is fucked. From what I read, they have to Pay Conan, period, if he leaves or stays. He can leave to Fox, and they could pay him $1 a year, and NBC would have to pick up the rest of the tab.

And yeah, heard the same about FNL. They may want to air is sooner because DirecTV and Comcast are not BFF's.

$1? You mean $1M?

Conan and Jay both have penalty clauses in their contracts if NBC boots them. Conan's is apparently $50M

Nope, believe it or not, $1. Deadline Hollywood reported that his contract stipulates that if they make any changes to the Tonight Show's start time or take him off, NBC is responsible to make him whole at $20m/year even if he leaves. So if Fox paid him $1/year, NBC would owe him $19,999,999/year.

Bingo! Fox the #1 network of 2009, would not only have to pay him nothing, but will get a boost in ratings and 'free' Conan. NBC would be paying to have their has kicked.

Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?

PASADENA, Calif – NBC decided to end the Jay Leno experiment when some of its affiliates started talking about dropping the nightly prime-time show, its top entertainment executive said Sunday.

NBC Universal Television Entertainment Chairman Jeff Gaspin said Sunday that Leno's nightly prime-time show will end with the beginning of the Winter Olympics on Feb. 12. NBC wants Leno to do an 11:35 p.m. show each night, a return to his old time slot, Gaspin said.

Gaspin said despite lower ratings for NBC at 10 p.m. compared with last year, the network was making money off the show.

But affiliates were upset that the show was leading fewer viewers into their late news programs, costing them significant advertising revenue. Some affiliates told NBC in December they would go public soon about their complaints if a change wasn't made, or even take Leno's show off the air.

"The drumbeat started getting louder," Gaspin said.

Gaspin has proposed moving Conan O'Brien's "Tonight" show to 12:05 a.m., and Jimmy Fallon's show would start an hour later. But the late-night hosts had not agreed to the move. Gaspin said he expected NBC's late-night situation to be cleared up by the start of the Olympics.

Asked if O'Brien and Fallon expressed anger at his proposal, Gaspin said both men were professional and understanding when they talked.

"Beyond that, it was a private conversation," Gaspin said.

Conan, I'm sure, is taking phone calls from various networks right now.

In other news, Steven Colbert is happy.

Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?

Here's how much NBC has and continues to screw this up:The Tonight Show has been airing at 11:30 (ish) for FIFTY-SIX years. And for fifty-six years, it has been--more or less--the highest-rated late-night show. So after 56 years of success, they are shooting themselves in the foot with Leno and the time slots. Whatever, it's not my problem.
