Was Zordon from Power Rangers a Racist?

I was thinking about this the other day. Zordon selected these five teenagers to fight Rita. He chooses an African American man to be the Black Ranger and then makes an Asian Woman the Yellow Ranger!

He must've went to some Tolerance classes since he later had a black woman become the yellow ranger and a White guy the Black ranger.

What do you guys think? Was Zordon a racist?

You've unearthed something that had evaded detection for so long! It went on right under our noses. Kudos, sir! That motherfucker is most certainly a racist.

Didn't they pick a kid from each race? White, Black, Asian, Hispanic and Nerd.

He's referring to the colors of the rangers matching their race (the black teen was the black ranger, the asian teen was the yellow ranger etc.) this issue has come up many a time during the run of the show.

There was no Hispanic when the show started. There was a black boy, asian girl, white girl and 2 white boys (one was a nerd).

The initial red ranger is part hispanic, but the second red ranger Rocky was Mexican.

Yes, I know. Still does not mean they didn't choose a wide-range of races.

The first red ranger's name was Jason. So the black and yellow rangers wore colors that reflected their race. Oddly enough, they were the first rangers to leave the show as well.

That's it! Tommy was the green/white ranger. He was a bad ass.

He was my second favorite ranger. Amy Jo Johnson was my fave.

Re: Was Zordon from Power Rangers a Racist?

Tommy (Jason Frank) looked more Native American, to me.

The first thing that clued me into the American / Japanese footage splicing was Tommy's original Green Ranger power shield - the American one looked like a grade-school play costume, cheaply done while the Japanese version was sleek and awesome. The American one wasn't even the right shape!

For years there were rumors that Austin St. John (Jason the original red ranger) became a gay porn actor but it was just a lookalike. Thuy Trang (Trini the original yellow ranger) was killed in a car crash in 2001. She wasn't wearing her seatbelt.

Amy Jo used to be a trip when she morphed. She was serious about that power... PTERODACTYL!!!!!!! I'm ashamed to say this, but I've already been looking at stores for that new toy line.

Wasn't there a 'battle' like every episode at the Peach Pit? How many times can they destroy that place!

Here's a link to the thread http://forum.dvdtalk.com/tv-talk/551...rangers-2.html scroll down to post #36 and go from there. The series is being re-launched early 2010 but toys are supposed to be in stores by the end of the year (which is technically right now) but I haven't seen any.

At the time the rangers didn't ever appear without their helmets and I had no idea that they were using Japanese footage because that was something I learned about years later. I figured they were stuntmen, and in a roundabout way, they pretty much were.

Re: Was Zordon from Power Rangers a Racist?

So those figures are more anatomically accurate compared to the originals. Interesting.

Damn I hope there's a Canadian channel that will air the show...I lived and breathed Power Rangers when it started. I remember making a full White Ranger costume out of sponge and black marker.

Just last year I dug up some old songs from the show and put them on my iPod for a while, but those songs get annoying very fast.

I'm just hearing about this. For the longest time I figured they were stunt actors because they all were so thin and the backgrounds looked kind of exotic, but I never thought to look into it.

I have a bunch of original PR toys in my garage. I have all the auto-morphin' rangers (where the heads flip), talking power rangers, megazord and dragonzord, thunder megazord and tigerzord, and several other megazords (I stopped watching the show after Zeo, so after that I bought the ones that were aesthetically pleasing to me). Those Zeo zords were a joke. I sold super zeo megazord in June.

Re: Was Zordon from Power Rangers a Racist?

It's best not to ask such things about Power Rangers....

I also stopped watching after Zeo. All the characters I liked were pretty much gone and that was that for the most part. I didn't like all the changes.

I had the Mega ThunderZord (which was just the most awesome toy I ever had, not to mention huge), the TigerZord and the DragonZord which was tiny in comparison. I didn't have every figure, but I did have the White Tiger Saber, the Green Dragon Dagger, Green, White, Black, Red and Yellow Rangers (original suits). I remember I tried to make a Lord Zedd costume but that failed big time. I also remember wanting a figure of him at the time but I could never find one in stores.

This thread is really taking us back!

I had that Lord Zedd action figure where you press the button on the back and the guts light up. I also had Titanus but threw it away a few years back. It was too big and pretty useless to me. I didn't like any of the carrier zords. I also threw out the Command Center playset.

Am I the only one who liked VR Troopers way more than Power Rangers?

Re: Was Zordon from Power Rangers a Racist?

Yeah, I dropped out when the movie came out; with the Fox Kids broadcasting schedule, it was never shown in turn and I was getting pissed at watching re-runs when they were advertising the big primetime changeover from Mega to Thunder Zords.

I did enjoy SuperHuman Samurai Cyber Squad, which was ahead of it's time IMO, and the terrible Teenage Tattooed Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills because the chicks were hot.
