But, on re-watching the series, I think if anything they should have gotten rid of Duchovny right away, and for good. All of his returns (and fake-deaths) made it really hard for them to have strong new stories, when there was always something Mulder-centred every 10 episodes or so, even when he was 'off' the show. They kept clinging to that, and eventually it doomed them.

I agree AVP77. Mulder leaving wasn't the problem, it was Mulder hanging on that dragged the show down. Dogget was a great character that they could have done so much more with had they just cut Mulder loose.
Reyes was still garbage though.

This is very true I consider myself a pretty big fan of Star Trek but this has always bugged me. I'm mostly a fan of The Original Series and of The Next Generation and can't stand how some fans are so stuck on how this or that needs to be done in order to satisfy their needs. The fans are a big part of why the Star Trek franchise almost died permanently in my opinion.

That's a damn good one starman.
I'll toss in ER dumping their intro/theme song. Some shows benefit from a spectacular opening which is rare these days with everyone opting for the minimalist approach. ER's intro was unrivaled at the time. It would be akin to the X-files or C.S.I. going for a Lost type intro.
