Re: NBC's 2009-2010 Fall Schedule - New/Returning Shows
The only thing more baffling than NBC's schedule is Friday Night Lights. So let me get this straight, they are going to take a show about high school football and air it during the summer months when there is no school or football.
Brilliant!
I was one of the few around here that waited on the NBC airings, but if that's the case, I might have to find other means.
I'm ecstatic about Chuck, but still on the fence about Heroes. I think I'll give it the premier to impress me before I dump it.
As for watching too much TV this year, I'm in the same boat as mrpayroll and jadzia. I'll be glad to trim some of the fat. Looks like the networks are doing it for me. The aforementioned Heroes is likely gone. Earl & Reaper are two other casualties I don't have to worry about catching up on.

I don't know why it must air during football season.
Frankly, I thought airing on Friday nights in the fall for S2 was beyond stupid since that was when actual HS football games were taking place. I always thought the perfect spot for it is Sunday 8 pm after the NFL regular season ends (on NBC).

Really? I thought Reaper was done for. I'll stick around, but they need to come up with a better story arc next season.
Spring is fine, but it needs to at least air during the school season. I guess we can look forward to a very special Christmas in July episode.

So I'm definetly in for Chuck, 30 Rock, The Office.
FNL get's bootlegged.
Probably in for Parks and Rec and whatever comedy they pair with the Thurs night comedies.
Heroes will be decided on after I play catch up with the rest of this season.
Maybe give Parenthood a shot. IF anything else takes off, I'll play catchup.

Has there been any talk of what happens if Jay Leno is a ratings disaster in the vein of Chevy Chase? I just don't see it holding up against the dramas on CBS and ABC, as well as competition from local news on Fox and CW channels.

If your a fan of Medium, I wouldn't freak out about it's "Cancellation."
The show is produced by CBS/Paramount and they have a very lucrative syndication deal with Lifetime. Now that NBC is no longer in the mix, CBS is going to profit big time without NBC. Plus, if it gets paired with Ghost Whisperer on Friday's, I can pretty much guarantee the ratings will go up 3-4M viewers.

Leno probably costs less than half as much as a scripted drama or comedy. I think it's almost a lock to profit for NBC at that timeslot.

I'm still down for Smallville. It's just big-dumb-goofy fun. It's never pretended to be anything but, and it delivers on that end. Clark, Lois, Chloe, and Oliver are still all very entertaining. (I'm a few episodes behind myself) They really need to cut loose though next year and let him fly. Whatever happened to Rosenbaum guest starring this season? I thought he inked a deal to appear in a half dozen last summer.

I hope Leno tanks, just to slap NBC in the face. Because to me, its a slap in the face to Conan, thinking no one will stay up to watch him, instead of Leno.

NBC has been talking about a switch to a "reality-oriented" programming line with the likes of Biggest Loser and Howie Mandell gameshows over costly scripted programs. This Leno thing saves them a huge chunk of change and if it bombs in the ratings, oh well for them.

Cupid of course was just a reboot of the same concept, with different actors, but it was basically the same show.

Are there descriptions of the new series? The only NBC returning shows (not including football) I watch are Office, 30 Rock, and L&O. I watch FNL on DirecTV.
I assume Parenthood is based on the Steve Martin movie.

For those curious, Medium doesn't air its season finale until June 1st. NBC has pushed some of its shows into June, with Law And Order and SVU also going til then.
My guess is that CBS couldn't announce the pickup until after the final episode airs.
As for descriptions, NBC released those 2 weeks ago when they did their first presentation.

I doubt if Leno is going to fail. He has a built in audience (old) who will probably appreciate watching him 1 1/2 hours earlier than usual. I would have loved Carson to have been given a 5 night a week show at 10 pm back in the 90's.
I predict Leno will average 6M to 7M a night and since it costs a lot less than the average 60 minute programming, it should pull in a decent profit for NBC.
Time will tell.
