High School kids at a religious school no less participating in virtual group sex, fight clubs, and ritual murders was a bit disturbing at first. But, when you think about it those things would probably way more popular than what people did in the holodeck on Star Trek. It was just wierd how even the shy girl didn't think it was much of a big deal.

Re: Sci-Fi greenlights Caprica to series for 2010
Just finished watching this as a rental off Netflix and I loved it.
I thought this was an excellent movie to start off the series. I thought Esai Morales and Erica Stoltz were awesome as the leads of this show. I think every scene they were in was intense and both men just owned the pilot.
If I had to choose some weak points it would be the teen characters. I thought Stoltz's daughter wasn't really a strong character even though she seems to be a central figure in the plot of this show.
Visually I thought it was very well directed. Even though this is more of a character-driven show with Science Fiction as a backdrop, I thought the special effects were actually pretty decent, especially the train bombing scene.
Looking forward to seeing the series next year. I hope since they are shooting all 20 episodes this year that they don't pull the 10/10 bullshit and drag season 1 until 2011.

I have to agree with several comments here that the timeline is a little screwy.
William Adama is 11 years old on this show. The Fall of Caprica happens 58 years later which would make Adama around 69 or 70 (is that around the time of the mini series in 2003?)
So, if I'm assuming this correctly, Adama would be around his Mid-Late 70's by the series finale of BSG?
The timeline of Caprica to the mini-series is a little confusing. Can anyone clarify if I'm even close to being right?

I loved it. The show producers are addressing the singularity.
The central question is "What does it mean to be alive?" This is a timely issue. Today we have machines almost able to pass the Turing Test. IBM is developing a computer that can understand natural language well enough to play Jeopardy. Google infers meaning from data relationships to better generate answers to queries. At a very low level even my Tivo shows some rudimentary intelligence as it tries to pick suggestions for me.
As the systems become more sophisticated, what happens when they become indistinguishable from being alive? And if they are indistinguishable do they have rights and responsibilities? Can we ethically turn them off or even exert control over them?

I actually ended up loving this. I thought this would be some terrible show in relation to BSG, but it really wasn't. I actually ended up watching the ENTIRE BSG series over again (I was trying to wait until the BD complete series came out) because Caprica far exceeded my expectations.

I caught this off Netflix a while back as well. Count me in the "liked it" camp as well. I expected it to suck but was pleasantly surprised. I'll definitely tune in!

Caprica will premiere Friday January 22 at 9pm.
http://www.thrfeed.com/
Syfy announced the premiere date for its "Battlestar Galactica" prequel "Caprica."
The new series, whose pilot has already had its home video debut, will hit the air Friday, Jan. 22 at 9 p.m., with its two-hour opener.
While on a combo panel for "Battlestar" and "Caprica," creator Ron Moore shed his usual Zen demeanor on the topic of the TV Acadmey's snubbing of his acclaimed show. With "Battlestar" absent from the major categories for the recent Emmy nominations for its final season, Moore took the Academy to task.
"It was a fraking crime that the entire cast of 'Battlestar' was never recognize for the performance they gave week in and week out," Moore shouted to rapturous applause. "We would not be here talking about the about 'Caprica' if not for the ensemble of actors on 'Battlestar.'"
While James Edward Olmos promised fans that the upcoming "Battlestar" movie "The Plan" will not be the last "BSG" project.
"I guarantee this will not be the last movie on 'Battlestar Galactica,'" he said. "It's going to be so successful it will rock their pants off."
If you want to watch the Pilot, I would recommend renting the DVD that is currently out. The TV version will undoubtedly have some edits (some very minor nudity)

Sorry for the ancient bump, but I have a question to those who have seen BSG. Do I have to watch BSG to get this series? I have all the BSG episodes queued up, but I wanted to give this a go as well.*
*In the interest of full disclosure, yes I have seen the miniseries of BSG and liked it. I have yet to watch the series proper though.

Having watched both the pilot for Caprica (which I enjoyed more than I thought I would) and the entire run of BSG, I think I could safely say that since it is a prequel, you don't have to watch BSG first, but you'll certainly miss some of the "mmmmm, ahhh!" recognition moments of the origins of various plots and characters from BSG that fans have grown to know and love.
