Swingtown - "Pilot" - 6/5/08

Did anyone watch? The whole thing kind of skeeved me out. The 70's look, the creepy glances the characters gave each other. I'll take a pass.

Watched it this morning after I watched Fear Itself. I read in EW that this was shopped around to HBO and Showtime before CBS took the bite. I does have the feel of a show made for HBO, but it feels watered down. Not to say that it's bad, I like it for what it was, but I don't see it lasting past the summer. The thing that I didn't like was that there was no build up for Bruce and Susan. They gave in right away to what was going on. I would have liked there to have been some build up to this and not having it happen right away. I did like how they are going to deal with Roger and Janet, and that they are going from shock to intriged about swinging also.

I liked the cheesy 70s look of everything, but I can see it going down the "Desperate Housewives" path. We had storms last night so the last 15 minutes was pre-empted with weather coverage. From the previews, I can guess what happened right after Bruce and Susan went into the swinger party but can someone fill in the details? (spoilerized for those who might have recorded it.)

Spoiler:
Old neighbors show up unannounced and both couples go to the party. Old neightbors are creeped out and leave while Bruce and Susan hang around for the fireworks (bad CGI fireworks btw) and drug use. Once inside of the swinger couple's house it leads up to a "let's go somewhere else" moment and then Bruce and Susan are in their bed in their new home with all smiles.
This show seemed to be more style than substance -- I do not know if that is because of the period piece aspect of the show or that the only dynamic so far is the swinger lifestyle vs. the conventional family unit. The show seems like it would be better suited for HBO or Showtime.

It was funny to watch this show with Bruce and Susan being about the age of my parents in 1976 -- I was five at the time -- and to think about the new house that we moved into circa 1975. I imagine there were some "kinky" things that happened in our neighborhood but I am pretty sure we did not have a "predatory" swinger couple keeping a lookout for new neighbors.

I haven't watched it yet, looking forward to it.

Heard it did well in the ratings last night.

THE PREMIERE OF "SWINGTOWN" BUILDS ON ITS "CSI" LEAD-IN AMONG ADULTS 18-49 AND ADULTS 25-54

"Swingtown" Tops NBC's Competing New Drama "Fear Itself " in Viewers and Key Demos

The premiere of CBS's SWINGTOWN, about the culturally transformative decade of the 1970s, built on its CSI lead-in among adults 18-49 and adults 25-54 and topped the competing debut of NBC's "Fear Itself," according to preliminary Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Thursday, June 5.

Airing against ABC's Game 1 of the NBA Finals (Lakers vs. Celtics), SWINGTOWN(P) premiered in second place in households (6.0/10), viewers (8.58m), adults 25-54 (3.4/09) and adults 18-49 (2.7/08).

SWINGTOWN improved on its CSI lead-in by +17% in both adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 and retained 94% of CSI's household delivery and 91% of viewers. Versus the time period a year ago, SWINGTOWN was up +17% in adults 18-49 and +10% in adults 25-54.

Against NBC's premiere of "Fear Itself", SWINGTOWN topped NBC by +71% in households (vs. 3.5/06), +48% in adults 25-54 (vs. 2.3/06), +35% in adults 18-49 (vs. 2.0/06) and by +3.35m viewers (vs. 5.23m, +64%).

Viewers who missed last night's SWINGTOWN premiere can watch the full episode on cbs.com and across the CBS Audience Network.

Updated Thursday ratings will be available this afternoon.

I wonder if they changed much from the pilot that was floating around last year.

I really liked this, but I'm a sucker for time-period pieces. Good music but they really shove it down your throat. I really like this cast. Grant Show looks like he was born to play a 70s swinger. Lana Parilla. Weird to hear Jack Davenport talk American-English and that hair.

Thought it was pretty cool but agree with the poster who said that there should of been a little more build up. Its seems like Bruce and Susan gave in rather quickly. But a show like this i believe would of been better on another network, preferably HBO. Would love to see some ass cheeks in there somewhere, some boobies!!!

Thanks. I think you're right about the "style over substance" and it would be much better with some nudity and swearing. Everything's better with nudity and swearing.

Yeah, this show was definitely made for pay cable. Then parts of it don't have to be imagined but there's plenty of stuff here I wouldn't expect to see on network TV. Lots of drug use (casually accepted) too.

A blow job, a three-way, and Tab in the first 5 minutes! What's not to love? I'm putting it on a season pass.

I could do without the kids. They had their own show on Fox. Yeah, they crammed the music down our throats. I still love the 70's look though.

I planned on watching this but completely spaced on it. Somehow I managed to record Fear Itself but didn't even noticed that this was airing at the same time. Guess I must take to the Web to see it ...

A sexy soap ... what's not to like? Maybe that it's not on Showtime.

So true - and then I watched the show, which was enjoyable enough to continue watching in future weeks.

Nice juxtaposition between the rotary phone family and the Touch-Tone Trimline phone family at the start of the episode.

So was the box for Rice-A-Roni that big in the '70s?

Does anyone else think Bruce and Susan's teenage daughter looks like California Congressman Henry Waxman?

I didn't....til now.

Frankly, I wish they would ditch all the teen storylines (and the teens themselves), particularly her crush on the teacher.
