According to NY Post - it was a last minute decision to hire 3 doctors.

'HOUSE' HIRES NEW DOCS
By DON KAPLAN
On House's team, (l-r) Chris Taub (Peter Jacobson), "Thirteen" (Olivia Wilde) and Lawrence Kutner (Kal Penn).November 29, 2007 -- REAL life mirrored the drama on "House" this week, when Dr. Cranky finally chose his new team of assistants.

Like the show, there was originally room for only two new doctors in the cast of the hit medical drama.

The show's producers hired five actors before the season began to be the five finalists in a season-opening story about Dr. House trying out a small army of young assistants eager to join his unit.

"But we didn't have the guts to let three of them go," "House" creator David Shore told The Post yesterday.

"If we could have, we would have kept all five," he said. "But we thought that wouldn't be intellectually honest with our viewers."

In the show that aired Tuesday night, the bosses made a last-minute decision as well to hire three doctors instead of two.

Lawrence Kutner (Kal Penn), Chris Taub (Peter Jacobson) and "Thirteen" (Olivia Wilde) are permanently joining the medical show for, at least, the remainder of the season.

Although "House" is a scripted drama, the actors who were hired to play the new recruits didn't know if they would be picked to be regulars on the show.

Producers based their final decision on which characters showed the best potential to provide interesting relationships with star Hugh Laurie's main character.

"We really didn't know who we were going to choose in the end," Shore said.

I concur.

Those names actually leaked earlier in the season before this episode was even shot. I was kinda hoping Cutthroat Bitch would make the cut, but I'm glad to hear she may return later in the season. I really dig the long legs and her short skirts.

It still makes absolutely no sense that they kept the worthless idiot Kutner.
They guy is not interesting, not funny, creates no worthwhile interactions, no good ideas...
The producers sound like idiots in that article....I guess that explains it.

I just don't think House could have handled having both CTB and 13 on his team.

He's been terrible on House, but I knew he would make it because Kal Penn is the best known actor among the finalists and he (apparently) appeals to younger viewers due to the movie Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (which they are making a sequel to).

Hum I've never heard of him or that movie. Thanks that makes sense, even if it is a lame reason.

I wonder why they are that desperate? Are the ratings in a slump?

I thought House should have called him "Kumar" on the show, but I never noticed him doing that.

I like Foreman. He's mini-House. Also, he has no neck. That's cool.

What about Superman Returns? I don't think they're desperate for anything, since he's not a big enough name for most people to recognize. I think he fits the role fine, although it isn't particularly different by the way he comes off.

I don't care for Foreman in this role. He just sits there and acts like a dick and tells people they shouldn't be doing something only to be wrong.

Anyone else not as thrilled with the show as time goes on? I guess with shows running out of new episodes I've seen a few of the first season episodes on Fox at different times and one last night on USA. It reminded me of why I enjoyed the show in the first place and made me realize that IMHO the show has gone a little downhill each season. There's less emphasis on the team and the patient/illness and more of the arching season's theme. S1- Vogler. S2- lawyer who was played by what's her name. S3- The cop and House's addiction. S4- survivor for new staff.

There's still a lot of really good and funny lines. But the stories within the episodes are not as good. There's not enough Wilson or Cuddy. There's not enough of the patient. There's less/no "clinic duty" with yielded some good stuff in the first couple seasons. Still not a bad show and I enjoy it, but seeing a few 1st season episodes made me realize I'm not as happy where the show has gone.

No, by no means are they in a ratings slump. The show still gets over 16M viewers a week and re-runs get about 7-8M viewers. I think creatively the producers realized the show was getting a little repetitive and that's why they hired some new cast members and started with this "Apprentice"-like competition to re-invent the wheel.

Kal Penn was also on 24 last season......You've never heard of Harold and Kumar go to White Castle???? What rock have you have living under?

I think it's better now. Watching the S1 reruns, it seems the show has come a long way.

Also, Jennifer Morrison's acting is atrocious in the earlier eps.

I don't watch 24 or pay attention to garbage movies. Let's not go into that kind of crap ok?

I think he was the same person that hadn't heard of Owen Wilson either, so it's not that surprising.

And really, not that many people would recognize Kal Penn.

Oh man, so House returns in January with 3 episodes left....that sucks!!

I assume they are airing 2 episodes and then saving the final one for Super Bowl Sunday. Then re-runs until May....ughhhh

I really really hate the WGA strike even more now.
