I've caught bits of it but I just wanted to see how big of a train wreck Britney was going to be and I must admit it exceeded my expectations. It looked like they just put the performance together.

Who's the guy on the pre-show? John something or other (I think). He used to be on MTV news and a reporter in the late 80's and 90's. Was a brunette, now a blond. With full eye make up. And still fucked up teeth. Man is he ever scary ugly(ier) now. And wayyyyy too old to be dressing like that.

Apparently Kid Rocked walked up to Tommy Lee and decked him. They should have aired it since it would probably would have been the most entertaining part of the show.

Britney was a freaking joke. Her dance moves reminded me of a stripper who's had one too many drinks before getting up on stage.

Just saw the Britney performace again, and someone needs to screencap 50 Cent's face while she was performing, too funny, he had a total WTF expression

Kicking off the show Sunday night with her new single, "Gimme More," Spears looked bleary and unprepared, much like her recent tabloid exploits on the streets of Los Angeles. She walked through her dance moves with little enthusiasm. She appeared to have forgotten the art of lip-synching. And, perhaps most unforgivable given her once-taut frame, she looked embarrassingly out of shape.

Even the celebrity-studded audience seemed bewildered. 50 Cent looked at Spears with a confused look on his face; Diddy, her new best friend, was expressionless.

Some comeback. Breathlessly hyped by MTV as the evening's most anticipated performance, it became the most shockingly bad of the night. Jive Records might want to push back that Nov. 13 album release date."

Just watching this now on the west coast... Britney was pretty bad. Chris Brown was pretty slick though.

I had never heard of Chris Brown before the VMAs (I'm not the hippest guy around) but I really enjoyed his performance a lot. He's got like classical 1940s musical dancer skills. Maybe he can head up a Xanadu remake.

I know a lot of people don't like Linkin Park, but damn if they don't always sound fucking good live.

They don't - they sound like shit live. The singer sounds tone deaf, and he tries to compensate by screaming. No hyperbole, I really think they're one of the worst live bands I've ever heard.

But they were par for the course in this show - compare this abortion to the line-up they had performing 15 years ago for the '92 VMAs:
The Black Crowes, Bobby Brown, U2, Def Leppard, Nirvana, Elton John, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Michael Jackson, Bryan Adams, En Vogue, Eric Clapton, Guns N' Roses.
Interesting the the weakest act from even back then were the R&B acts - and now, that seems to be the majority of what gets exposure.

They're one of the best to my ears... Chester sounds just like he does off studio CD's to me, unlike other bands. Heck, I like Fall Out Boy and don't think much of their live performances. I imagine if you think they're bad in general, it'll sound worse to you live.

I love Rosario. I really, really, really do. And I realize that she's just reading a cue card, but I must live in the part of the world where (two years later) Chris Brown isn't famous..

However, I was able to find a good performance (other than the Foos, of course). That distinction goes to Alicia Keys and those scrumptious thighs of hers.

I agree, Linkin Park sounds pretty damn good live compared to many artists out there that dont sound nowhere near what the vocals sounds like on thier tracks (like your example of Fall Out Boy, i dont like em anyway, but they sound like shit every single time they perform). Yeah Chester screams, but he sings too, nicely.
Oh and yeah, Alicia Keys is fine......

His new moniker is "Pee...Did He?"

Well, in Burnett's defense, wasn't the entire show one big parody?

Worst part is that the joke was at the audience's expense.

I totally agree that the Tommy Lee vs. Kid Rock Celebrity Death Match would have been the highlight of the evening if the cameras had been rolling.
